I actually went to physical therapy for my knee and a lot of exercise revolved around keeping a strength leg (knee not bent) and bending at the thigh.
One example is they had me lay on the floor, keep the leg with the bad knee straight, attach an ankle weight, raise my leg off the floor 6 inches or so, hold it, and then lower back down.
Doing 20 of those were tough.
