Give yourself a break. Get a massage, and try to find things that are active that you enjoy like going for walks or putting on music and dancing, or that need to be done like shoveling snow, but don't beat yourself up over not working out. Then figure out what it is that you want to do--lots of good ideas here about setting goals for competitions or personal challenges.

I have a friend who teaches health at all sizes classes and she encourages people to think back to childhood and what activities they enjoyed then. For me it's swimming and riding my bike, so those are the things I do now, and I still enjoy them.

Rest and take it easy. Do gentle yoga - even 2-5 minutes only, and do “recovery” workouts. That would be in your heart-rate zone 1. Get a good chest-strap heart-rate monitor, and learn your own heart zones (exertion), Levels 1 (easiest) thru 5 (hardest). Get good sleep, and some therapeutic massages! Cheers!

JAX, what helped me is to go to a physical therapist and let him/her work up a routine for me. I then go two to three times per week. If you get a good physical therapist, it can be enjoyable.

I would go ahead and take a break every once in a while. Do something different that you enjoy, whether it be a hobby, or whatever. Work on the guilt issue. Guilt never gets anyone anywhere, except miserable.

It sounds like maybe you should focus on your favorite exercise right now, which seems to be hiking. Have you tried the hiking poles, whatever they are called?

I talk sternly to myself, reminding me that it took me over 6 months to lose all that weight, and do I really want to go back there again? I tell myself that I would be letting down all those people -- husband, co-workers, sisters, parents, Spark friends -- who've supported me during my journey and are proud of my accomplishment.
Stepping on the scale and seeing that the needle has moved in the wrong direction also helps. But once I start doing exercise again, it doesn't take long to re-establish the habit -- as long as the lapse hasn't been too long.

The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

Sometimes...our bodies need that 3-5 days break... if we are super stressed, and/or fighting off an illness its actually good to have the "down time"---no guilt!!

As others have suggested...find something new to spark your inner challenge mode:
-take a class (biking, tai chi, ballet, ice skating lessons)
-go to the library and find 2 or 3 DVD's you haven't done
-plan a trip for next spring and get ready for it: (hiking, canoeing, 5K in another town, tourist for 2 weeks walking everywhere)
--join an active group: square dance, hiking club, amateur hockey team, volleyball team...

Or, if you've got a few issues like sore back, hips or knees: ask for a referral to a physical therapist and focus on getting your body well. Commit yourself to 2 months of consistently doing those exercises...!! All the best,

This has happened to me before. You're not going to like the answer. When I was completely burned out and exhausted and went from loving to hating the gym, I made a scary decision: I stopped exercising. I would go on short walks just to keep myself busy, but I needed time off from structured exercise. I took off a whole two months, but you may need more or less time off. It's personal. But trust me, I'm back in a much healthier mindset with exercise than ever before, and my workouts have gotten better, too.

Thank you. I live in the midwest and in the summer I am out walking. Only a few intriguing places to hike, but I agree when you are outside and away from everyone, it is wonderful.

Another post-menopausal woman chiming in here!! I've used SparkPeople for over 13 years and love it.

If I get burned out, I have NO trouble taking 3-5 days off ... and no guilt. Sometimes life just happens, for so many reasons. It's about consistency MOST of the time for me.

I do strength training (body weight, machines and dumbbells) and my primary cardio is walking and the recumbent bike when it's nasty out. My true love, however, is hiking, the more remote, the better. It's meditative and calming AND exercise. Win-win in my book.

It's the combination of nature, being away from people AND doing some challenging trails. I take day trips on the weekends to awesome trails that I search out - they're everywhere (NOTE: I live in the Midwest and still find them)!

Four years ago, my goal was to hike the Grand Canyon, a promise I made to my partner when she was in hospice. Two years ago, I hiked the Grand Canyon!

Don't know where you live or what you like, but that's what works for me.

In addition to what Arch suggested, can you maybe set a goal to work towards to add purpose to your workouts? If you enjoy strength training. maybe you can work towards a body building competition? If you enjoy yoga, maybe you can be come a certified instructor? Or, maybe you can become a certified fitness instructor? Many local gyms are hiring instructors regularly.

I'm post menopausal and like you, I've been exercising regularly for many years.

I've done all sorts of different fitness routines over the years. When I get burned out, I look for a new challenge. something I've never done before because I may have thought,"I'm too fat to do that".

With all the strength training you've done, you probably have decent upper body strength. Have you ever thought about rock climbing ? Indoor climbing walls have become extremely popular. It's something I've tried and enjoyed.

How about boxing ? Boxing classes are something I've been taking for a few years now. I love hitting the heavy bag. If you don't want to try boxing, there are plenty of other martial arts classes.

And if martial arts aren't your thing, how about signing up for a 5k road race ? have you thought about doing a road race, just for the challenge or fun ? there are also 10k, half marathons and even full marathons. You could train for a Spartan obstacle course. How about dancing lessons ? flamenco, ballroom, tap.

What's something you've absolutely never done that you might want to try ? A person is never too old to do anything. if you have bad joints like me, you just modify the exercises where needed.

In order to get your fitness mojo back, you need to find an activity to be passionate about. You should look forward to exercising, not dreading it. if you're dreading it, you're burned out.

For almost 30 years I have worked out faithfully 5-6 days a week. I have done a variety of things: walking, weights, kickboxing. PIYO, T25, yoga. Within the last two weeks, I am forcing myself to workout and I hate it. I switch things up. I try new workouts and still...I so want to take a short break. By short, I mean 3-5 days. Then the guilt sets in. What do you do? I have beachbody and I use the site religiously. Every time I read things in articles, I feel like I am doing the wrong exercise for what I want and then more guilt. I am pretty sure I am starting menopause so I know how important it is to do resistance training, but nothing interests me. Please help.
