My rule of thumb... is drink when I feel thirsty...drink a glass with meals, and then one more glass "just because"! LOL---I often also relax with some tea or coffee, so that counts---and because I take one or two meds each day, there's two glasses of water there as well. I believe people are overthinking this when they are calculating "oz needed" and putting it in one jug...

You should take your weight and divide it by 2 and that is the amount of ounces you should drink. Depending on your workout and work (outside, humidity?) drink a few ounces more that day

I usually shoot for the 64 ounces. Sometimes I get close to 100 ounces. It just depends on the weather and my activity level for the day.

If your urine is clear, you are drinking too much.
It should be a light straw color.
If it is darker, drink more!

That is easier to go by than measuring out ounces or cups.

Actually 64 ounces or about 2 liters is a good general rule. However, there are many variables like medication and exercise that can effect your needs for liquid. You also get liquid from food!

Urine color is a good indicator of your hydration. If it's close to lemonade color, you're good. If it's lighter or even clear, you're over hydrated. (Yes, that can be a concern!) If it's dark, you are dehydrated.

It naturally depends on the health, age, size and weight as well as activity levels, the type of job they do and the climate they live in.

Our body is composed of about 60 % water. We tend to have lower water content as we age, so babies have the most. The elderly are often down around or below 50 %. If you don’t get enough water, you can become dehydrated. As a result, and in order to prevent dehydration, you need to drink adequate amounts of water!

An ideal intake of water consumption for adults is about 2.5 liters of water daily. This quantity includes drinking water, drinks of all kinds and the moisture available from the food and products we eat. As long as you are drinking pure water or fresh fruit or vegetable juices then it looks like 4 glasses a day is a good minimum number of intake. The rest of your fluid intake should be managed by a healthy diet.

Here’s a science based research about how much water you should drink every day:
