I also agree with pre-op physcial therapy. Whenever possible, it's a good idea to strengthen the supporting muscles around a joint before surgery, in anticipation of the atrophy (muscle shrinking) that will happen after surgery. Basically, it's kind of like banking some muscles because you know you're going to lose a little bit.

My Mom had knee surgery a number of years ago.. doctor told her to walk and also gave her exercises at home to strength before and after the surgery... it all was very beneficial.

I know many people using a drug free alternative product that is helping with pain and improving their quality of life... a friend just had knee reconstruction surgery and she is finding the product very helpful.

Suggestion: ask your doctor if you can be referred to Physical Therapy to start working on the muscles you will need post surgery. They will know what is safe for you to do, and can help set up a program of gradual improvement for you!

As someone else suggested, there are some great short SEATED chair videos here on Spark. There is Upper Body, core, and even cardio. I used these post my foot surgeries---even having to modify/skip some of the moves, but LOVED them!! all the best,

Strongly recommend the limited mobility exercises Coach Jen linked below. Also, you can ask your doctor for guidance re what you can do!

Do you have access to a pool? Water exercise is a great workout that's easy on your joints. You might also want to check out our Limited Mobility Lifestyle Center. All of the exercises here can be done from a seated position:

Hope that helps,

I'm scheduled for a partial knee replacement in August, but for now walking hurts. Any suggestions on how to exercise without stressing my knee? (I don't belong to a gym, so things requiring expensive equipment are out.)

Thanks for any and all suggestions!
