I work to get more than 10,000 steps (usually get 15,000 or more) and that comes from several things:
1. I walk around the house in the morning and if it's nice will take a short walk outside before heading to the gym. this is just to "wake up" my body
2. Morning workout usually gets me close to 10,000 steps and at least 30 minutes of cardio. Some days I take a barre class for strength.
3. My Garmin reminds me to get up and move every hour. At least once a day that will be at least a 10 minute walk....around our home, town, or just a big loop around the parking lot when I go to the grocery store.

All of these add up to more than 10,000 steps plus I get at least 30 minutes of cardio every day. I've read that even if we work out once/day sitting for the rest of the day hurts us. That's why I keep moving.
Just my routine and it works for me.

The goal of 10,000 steps per day typically includes any exercise you're doing, so I wouldn't separate them. I'd just make an effort to be more active in your daily life outside of exercise whenever possible.

When you tally up your steps on a fitbit or similar, do you include any exercise? For example, I can tally up 10,000 steps on a training run and then do nothing for the rest of the day, but that's quite sedentary. Do you think it's better to keep the steps from running separate maybe?
