1) Do you wear underwear while working out?

I never wear underwear when I wear yoga pants, tights or spandex. I like smooth lines.

I do wear underwear when I wear shorts that aren't tight.

2) Why or why not?

I only wear cotton underwear and they get sweaty and chafe. No thank you to a wet breeding ground for yeast.

3) Are there certain activities when it's better to wear them or not?

Can't think of any.

4) Would you recommend any specific undies for exercising?

Nope, I recommend trying commando! It's liberating! In fact I'm wearing tights and no undies right now!

I do and cant imagine going to the gym without undies. if not for anything else then for the sake of being comfortable. I think swimming or water activities where one is wearing a swimsuit are the only activities to do without underwear.

I always wear underwear when exercising. First I need a sports bra and can't imagine going "commando" so to speak.

1) Do you wear underwear while working out?
2) Why or why not?
2) Are there certain activities when it's better to wear them or not?
3) Would you recommend any specific undies for exercising?

Sometimes I do, and other times I don't - it is activity, intensity, and outer clothing dependent.

For moderate activity where I am not concerned about wicking away moisture, or temperature control, or odour control, and where I'm comfortable in wearing casual "street" clothes, then I generally wear standard, comfortable, cotton or silk underwear. Eg. brisk walking on local trails

For extended duration / medium to high intensity outdoor activity, where I need quick drying / moisture wicking / temperature control / odour control, and where layers are going to be needed, then I generally wear SmartWool underwear as my base layer (panties and sports bra in summer, or full-length bottoms and long-sleeved top in colder weather). Eg. Back-country and mountain hiking

For extended duration activity without layers, or for shorter duration / high intensity activity , where I need quick drying / moisture wicking / temperature control / odour control properties, then I most often wear compression shorts or skorts, and sports bras, made with materials designed for the purpose. I would not wear additional panties with these, since they would just add more opportunity for chafing, and actively work against all of the performance properties of the short / skort materials.
Eg. indoor treadmill workout, outdoor power walking, resistance training

For yoga or stretching, where I want full freedom of movement but don't particularly need "performance" fabrics, I most often will go with fitted cotton / spandex blend leggings and a sports bra, with no panties. For these activities, I consider panties to be a potential negative due to added constriction, possibility of chafing, and just another piece of fabric that could hold sweat. My leggings keep me quite decently covered while allowing me to easily judge form and placement, and have complete range of motion.

After any of these activities, I'm going to be properly laundering all of the clothing options (as well as myself).

"Science is not about building a body of known 'facts'. It is a method for asking awkward questions and subjecting them to a reality-check, thus avoiding the human tendency to believe whatever makes us feel good."

When at home doing strength training I usually wear only underwear, compression shorts to be exact. Well, I guess I almost always wear those when exercising.. also wear when going on bike rides and usually but not always when hiking, it really depends on how long of a hike. Short ones I'll go without but longer ones I do. I primarily wear them to prevent chaffing :( when not exercising i'm one of those that goes commando all the time. However, not only for chaffing but as a guy its just better to have my male sex organs firmly in one spot and not getting in the way when trying to get some exercise and moving a lot.

1) Do you wear underwear while working out? Generally, yes

2) Why or why not? Why? I guess I find it more comfortable and want to avoid any potential exposure if the fabric has gotten thin due to wearing out unbeknownst to me or unfortunate weight gain.

2) Are there certain activities when it's better to wear them or not? I guess I like it more when it's wet or humid out; I walk and run outside regularly outside and I feel like wearing underwear mitigates chafing.

3) Would you recommend any specific undies for exercising? I don't have any special workout underwear. I have not heard or read good reviews for the specially designed workout underwear; they seem to cause wedgies and my cotton ones don't.

I suppose I'll bite :P

1 - no
2 - way more comfortable (don't get a wedgie, no excess sweat buildup, etc.)
3 - don't know - never wear them when working out
4 - n/a

PS - I usually wear leggings or bike shorts or capris - nothing that would possibly "breeze open" and create an... incident.

I DO wear a sports bra, however, but not sure if that's what you're referring to as "undies"

1) Yes.
2) To feel more comfortable.
3)When I don't want lines to show.
4) Cotton or moisture wicking.

Stronger, more powerful, I got this.

Hello, Sparkers! It's Melissa Rudy, a writer here at SparkPeople. I'm working on an upcoming article called "Should You Wear Underwear When You Exercise?" I would love to get some input from our members on this topic.

If you'd like to contribute, please comment or message me with the following info:

1) Do you wear underwear while working out?
2) Why or why not?
2) Are there certain activities when it's better to wear them or not?
3) Would you recommend any specific undies for exercising?

Thanks so much!
Melissa
