I would say rowing if you want a very specific, single exercise.

Advanced burpees are pretty good too, but I find I can't keep them up anywhere near as long LOL.

Does Crossfit count? It builds both muscle strength, mental toughness, and physical endurance more than any other exercise I've tried. Another option would be rucksack marching.

Burpees and squat-thrusts.

Burpees pretty much challenge the majority of your muscles, plus you get the added cardio bonus from doing them, too. More advanced burpees throw a pushup into the sequence. Military style have you also kick your legs out and back in while in the plank position. Ouch!

The single best exercise is being chased through the woods by a Grizzly. If you survive, you will have had the best workout of your life. So... turn the lamest workout session into the workout of your life by incorporating High-Intensity Intervals. Exercise at the max of your ability for intermittent bursts. You'll do more in less time and it turns even mundane exercises into something better all around. (Please do work up to it slowly so as not to cause damage to yourself.)

Compound exercises work across more than one muscle joint, and can be a very time-efficient way to train. A simple compound-based routine that works most of the major muscles in the body would be:

* squats/lunges
* deadlifts
* planks
* pushups
* pullups/lat pull downs/dumbbell rows
