I prefer outside because there's so much more to occupy my mind or just everything that I pass by. I live in the country so we have a lot of wildlife and it's always better when I can just go out and walk or hike and see the beauty of nature while burning calories.
I honestly haven't walked on a treadmill in years. I used to exclusively walk on a treadmill and run (when I was capable of running), but then our treadmill one day just suddenly shorted out, and that was the end. I prefer the treadmill because I can keep my pace. I can walk at least 3.3 mph on a treadmill and thus, walk a little over six miles in two hours. However, if I walk outside, I'm not very good at keeping a pace, so it takes me 2-2.5 hours to walk five miles. It's very frustrating. Also, I live in Las Vegas, where it is incredibly hot in the summer. I don't mind the incredibly cold temperatures in the winter, as I find it always easier to exercise outdoors when it's cold than when it's hot. Anyhow, I have to wake up very early in order to walk just a couple miles during times like now. And, I'm not an early riser. Someone suggested Leslie Sansone. I think I will try that for days like today when I wake up late.

Like others have said, it really just depends on what is going to work for you. I, personally, enjoy the treadmill more than running outside. I just get really bad allergies when I head outside and it makes running even more miserable. Treadmills are nice to have whenever the weather isn't great. Whenever it rains or is too hot outside, I would just make the excuse to go another day.
I'm assuming you already have a treadmill? Or are you looking into buying one? They can sometimes be expensive but worth the investment.

Just the thought of using a treadmill makes me sweat like I would if I was headed to the gas chamber. Walking is my favorite exercise. I listen to podcasts as I walk. It makes the time go really fast. Do you like needlepoint? Comedy? Cooking? Religion? Politics? Find a podcast that matches your interest and go! Spark On!
Eliminate "I will try". Replace with "I will". You are now ready to succeed. Let's go.
I usually cover greater distances and stick with it longer when I run or walk outside. The scenery, different routes, and fresh air all help keep me motivated. I have an office job where I'm stuck inside all day, which might explain why going out makes a difference.
Are you starting over or just getting back on track? Most of us here have fallen off the wagon, gotten up, dusted ourselves off, and get back on track. It happens!
As for the walking or any exercise, the "best" for you is whatever you will consistently do. Personally, I prefer running/walking outside because treadmills bother my knees too much but I do use a treadmill sometimes for maybe 2 miles if the weather is just too crummy. (I live in Minnesota so it has to be super dangerous for me to not go outside.)
Whatever motivates you, do it! I will always LOVE to walk outside but I use my treadmill for times when I can't leave or it is too hot, cold or dark. I have a much easier time running on my treadmill than I do outside, so I do use my treadmill more when it comes to running. Hope you find what motivates you!

When I wake up about 4 or 5 am, there is so dark outside that I absolutely refuse to go out walking so I use the treadmill. I used to HATE treadmilla but now I love it. Usually my pace is 6.4-6.5 and the rise 4-6. No outside walk can trump that.

Also outdoors gives changes that a treadmill doesn't. It also depends where you live. Where is your air the cleanest? Walking in a polluted city would be less healthy than on a treadmill in an environment with processed air. Or house and gym air is usually not as good as outside. Allergies can also be an issue better controlled indoors. I prefer a 3 mile walk to 15 minutes on a treadmill, but time may also be a factor. Either way is better than not exercising.
