For me a consideration is that some exercises feel 'safer' using a barbell. Bench press is one of them. It's probably just the wobble being reduced.

The maiin difference between dumbbells and a barbell is that the barbell acts as a cross-brace between your arms. With dumbbells, you are working the smaller muscles in your shoulders a lot more to keep the weights balanced and stabilized, but with a lot of the sideways "wobble" eliminated with barbells, you will likely find you can lift slightly heavier with a barbell.

Dumbbells will give you a better all-round "functional" strength, but the extra weight with barbells means you are challenging the larger muscles in your arms and shoulders more, and their larger size means you may see more straight-up muscle mass gain by working those muscles harder.

I'll admit that my bias is towards functional strength (and therefore dumbbells), but I know that some people have different objectives, and that's OK too.

The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man.

Hey, im currently following dumbell ppl routine but i might switch to a barbell based programme like greyskull or starting strength

My Question is for bench press can i substitute barbell for dumbell bench press? . Will i experience optimal gains if i do so?. ..even overhead press i might do with dumbells. Only squat and deadlift and barbell rows im comfortable using barbell. Any thoughts?
