I have this problem too. I have heard that sweets put weight on your hips and breads put weight on your upper body but I know you can't lose weight in one spot, you have to burn off what you put in and it comes off your body where it wants to unfortunately.

No specific exercises as you already pointed out. Losing weight overall will improve the issue. Other apples that I know seem to lose weight in that area first when they start exercising and paying attention to nutrition.

Movement is essential. And I think logging food helps as well, you must have an accurate sense of what you are putting in your body.

No exercise of any variety will make you lose weight.

Weight loss is all about eating at an overall deficit - consuming fewer calories than your body burns/uses.

Your shape is your shape, and we're all stuck with what we got in that department. We cannot "encourage" our bodies to lose weight in areas we don't like - chances are, the last place it will come off will be the first place you WISH it would come off. You may find certain diets help with bloating or the like, but that has nothing to do with fat loss (although may affect your appearance depending on your size)

All exercise does (in terms of losing fat - there are lots of other benefits) is increase your calorie burn in a day. If, as an example, you take a walk and burn an extra 200 calories over your normal day-to-day activities, then you can have that many more calories to eat that day and still stay in your deficit. You can also skip the exercise and just eat less.

Use a food scale to weigh your food to the gram, enter it all correctly, and record everything you eat. Stay in your deficit and the weight will come off. Unfortunately, it's a long, slow process. Weight will go up and down, but overall you'll lose over time.

Shoulders and thighs/glutes help balance an apple shape out, but to be honest, the difference is really hard to see until your BF is getting pretty low and you're well within a healthy weight range (at least in my experience - even 30 pounds over my "goal" weight and it didn't help much).

The only way to spot reduce fat is liposuction. You lose weight evenly throughout your body. The only way to not have your apple shape is to lower your body fat. Regular exercise can help you even out your body fat disposition if ever increased. You need to increase cardio to more than walking for weight loss. Adding muscle through intense weight training increases muscle mass, evens body weight disposition, and allows you to eat more food and lose body fat. Walking is always the best place for most people to start with. Look for ways to include extra little bits of walking into your daily routine. Park further away from stores when you go shopping. Make a habit of walking a full loop around the store before you actually begin to shop or if you're at the mall...walk the full loop around the mall before you leave. You'll be surprised how adding the little bits of movement every day can help.

But I would also include regular walks a few times a week just for the exercise. You're legs will tell you when it's time to add more exercises such as maybe swimming or biking. The good part about being apple shaped is that you may have stronger legs and thighs that don't rub together when you try to get exercise. Let that work to your advantage and burn calories by moving your legs more...walking, biking, swimming..you pick.

As long as it doesn't hurt, you can always walk.

I walk an hour a day, every day. Sometimes more.
I also do my best to journal everyday.

Since you can't spot reduce fat, find a workout that you enjoy and will do consistently. Consistent, appropriately challenging strength or resistance training will help you slim down more than cardio alone will. Women tend to fear that strength training will make them bulk up and look like a body builder... but that is far from true! Strength training will help you lose inches and gain firm, toned muscles. Cardio will help reduce the fat on top of those muscles, allowing them to show through. (And since muscle tissue is more dense than fat tissue, the same weight takes up less space... meaning you'll become smaller as you build muscle, even if your overall weight doesn't change.)

Another thing you could think about would be specifically trying to build muscle in the legs and shoulders to help balance out that apple shape.

Most of your weight loss will / should come from healthy changes to your diet anyway, so focus on finding an enjoyable way to keep active (and incorporate strength training) as part of your healthy lifestyle change.

" What can you do for this. I know you can't spot reduce. "
Then you know there is nothing specific you can do to reduce one area of your body.

I gain weight most easily in my gut. I've been told it's common with Type 2 diabetics. When I follow a low carb high fat diet, my gut decreases as well. When I follow a low fat diet, I will lose weight but not in my gut and I will need diabetes meds that will make it more difficult to lose weight there.

For me, the combo is Dr Bernstein's diet plus pilates machines. Pilates machines (usually the Reformer) have given me back a waistline. Pilates mat workouts generally do nothing for me and actually do something painful to my lower back.

Burning fat is an all-body process, and you can't target where you lose weight from. Energy is delivered to the muscles via the bloodstream, NOT from being absorbed from surrounding fat stores. Working specific muscles will not reduce fat in that are (this is what is meant by "spot reduction").

What you can do is to continue to reduce your overall body fat through a combination of cardio, all-body strength training and watching your intake, and some of it will naturally come off the belly.

As for what exercise - pick whatever is convenient, and that you think you will enjoy, as this makes it more likely that you will stick with it in the longer term.

I hope I did the posting a picture right. I have a question. I'm shaped like an apple and all my weight is all from my belly up. What can you do for this. I know you can't spot reduce. What kind of exercise to do? TIA
