Resistance bands! They are inexpensive, don't take up space, and you can do all sorts of exercises with them. There are a lot of good videos here on Spark and more on Youtube.

Squats and lunges are some of the most effective lower body exercises around, as they work a range of lower body muscles.

Add in calf raises (preferrably barefoot), and perhaps also deadlifts, and you have worked most of the lower body muscles in just 3 moves.

Demos of these are available at www.sparkpeople.com/resource/exercise_demo

And over time, if these become easier, you can switch to the single leg variants to make things more challenging (and also work the smaller stabilizing muscles to keep yourself balanced).

If you click on Videos at the top of this page, it will take you to SparkPeople TV which has a wide variety of home workouts. If you click on Learn at the top of the page, go to Fitness, then click Exercise Library at the top, all of the strength exercises there can also be done at home.

Hope that gives you a start.

I am a Type 2 Diabetic, and my diabetes educator says I need to start strength training to gain muscle, without loosing weight. I weigh 140 lbs, and am on a very strict diabetic food plan.

Any suggestions on how to incorporate strength training here at home would be very appreciated. Especially for the lower body. TIA
