I love when I can run outside with the fresh air and sunshine! I also love tracking my progress and challenging myself to be better - and the Strava app really breaks all stats down in detail. Music of course helps too!

Where energy is coming from during your workout, or the type of exercise is largely irrelevant to weight loss. (Look up the "Fat Burning Zone myth"). What matters is the overall balance between calories burned and calories consumed over the entire 24 hour day.

I agree though that whatever form of exercise works for you is the one you should be doing.

Studies show you actually lose more weight with a brisk walk than running. It burns more fat than running because while exercising at a lower intensity, fat is being used as fuel. Also much easier on your joints. I say do whats best for you and your situation.

I don't hate running. i used to. when i was younger i was not fit and would get cramps almost every year when it came time to run the mile. i also hated it because i was not fast, and struggled with distances

i do a lot of walking/ low impact videos. i am ready to be at the next level more often. sometimes i am not in the mood for high impact, but i want to crank up the intensity. i think running is the next natural step.

the satisfaction of distances that only a tiny tiny percentage of the population will ever attempt.

way more bad@ss than walking

being out in the woods for hours and hours, without seeing anyone else, but tons of beautiful scenery.

I do run but I honestly don't enjoy it. I like the way I feel when I'm done, and I like seeing my time and distance improve, but other than that, I only run because it gets me the results I want in the least amount of time.

I did C25K to start running.

Keen to be lean in 2018!

Never did like running... but I LOVE walking!
I would think there are similarities... minimal equipment needed, can do anywhere, great stress reliever, out in the fresh air, etc.

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to run in about 6 months due to plantar fascitis.
But I really enjoyed the way you can work on specific goals. It was a great release for stress. Hoping to get back to it in the spring.

I enjoy it because I have made friends through it! I am part of a run club and we do races, events, and happy hours together. Some of us have even traveled together to do races!

While cycling is my passion, one of the things I like about running is that it feels natural, and like something I was meant to do. No fancy equipment, no membership fees, no trying to follow some overenthusiastic grinning instructor, just me and the road.

Seriously, humans are one of the very few animals that can run long distances, because they sweat and can keep their body temperature stable while they run. (Horses also). Most other animals can run fast, but have to stop after a few minutes to avoid overheating.

If you can do some intervals, perhaps try a Couch to 5K program. These basically mix in progressively increasing intervals of running and walking over 6-8 weeks, until you are running continuously. This gradual approach allows you to build fitness, so that no one stage towards running is more than you can handle.

The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man.

Thanks to old age, Arthritis, and other infirmities, I can't run. Much like you, I do short sprints to keep my heart rate up while walking but can do no more. That brings me to my question. You don't seem to have a love of running as some do, so why do it? It's much harder on the body than walking and doesn't produce results that justify the additional risk in my mind.
