Obesity in the US is at epidemic proportions. Sadly this is also now true for the youth in our country. It may be unfair to stereotype a whole nation, but hey...the truth hurts and it is true for the most part.

Blessings,

My motivation is to wear my clothes without seeing a pooch sticking out of them.

Sometimes it is hard to be motivated, but I'm always glad when I have it done

I agree with ZRIE014. Motivation comes from your brain. It is not dependent on outside influences. Who really gives a rat's butt what stereotype we fall into anyway. If it matters, be part of what changes it and let them think what they will in the meantime. The thing you *can* find externally is an inspiration. Stories of people who already did what you seek to do should inspire you, especially if that story was a lot tougher than your story. Once you find inspiration, your mind and spirit will give you inclination, motivation, dedication, and determination to reach your goals. The hel...., er, I mean... the heck with what others think. Bust out and change their minds! You *can* do it!

The experiences mentioned in this thread are indeed sad, but statistically I can see why they happen. Both the CDC and OECD consistently find that around 60% of Americans are overweight or obese, with about 1/3 of American adults being obese and women tending to be overweight more often than men. And the numbers keep rising.

I have been mulling this over a lot since yesterday morning. Yes, the US has a problem with obesity but for foreigners to stereotype all Americans as fat and to show surprise when they meet an American who is thin (but not necessarily healthy) or fit/a healthy weight is sad. It's as bad as American treating foreigners on our soil based exclusively on stereotypes.

I have had the opposite experience. I actually had an obese Hungarian woman call me a fat American when I was teaching English in Budapest. She wasn't even bold enough to say it to my face; she told it to her niece whom I was tutoring and the niece told me. I was about the weight I am now: overweight but not obese. I was so angry and lost a lot of respect for the woman. It did not motivate me at all.

emoticon While in El Salvador this year I was asked why I was not obese? They said they thought all Americans except athletes and actors were obese like las viejas. (old women) in their country. I was embarrassed and offenend. But I realized how perceptive (they watch USA television). That is motivating!
