Speaking as someone who lived under a neighbor who used a mini trampline, we could hear the squeaking and the floor creaked when she did her trampoline exercises. FWIW.
One thing that can help is jumping quietly or moving quietly. The muscle power and thought required to do that can help your exercise (more control over your movements) and keep it quieter. Still remember watching one guy run on the treadmill at the gym. He bounced every step and came down full force on the treadmill. I'm sure you're not doing that. :) Just something I noticed and thought, "Goodness, he could run more quietly."
Love my foam rubber mats. They are very comfortable and they do quiet things down a lot.

I came across this post. I do not live in an apt. per say. I do live in a park where we are all on top of each other. If I put my tv on 20 they can hear it to buildings down. I read some of the posts and have taken in some good ideas. Thanks for posting this question and all who posted to it.
I'm currently working out with a YouTube series that is super quiet and super effective! I'm totally huffing and puffing. Under YouTube, search "Millhoy Silent". You'll get a super energetic, positive upbeat person named Millionaire Hoy (its his real name, yeah) and you'll get his 30-day "Silent But Deadly Workout" series. I've done quite of a few of his series and all very good! Have fun!!
It's important to communicate with your neighbors! Go have a conversation first. Let them know when you'll be working out, and find out how that will clash with their schedules. For example, if they're not even home at that time, then you're worrying over nothing! "Hey, I'd like to work out upstairs, but I don't want to bother you. When is the best time for you?"
That way, if you DO make noise, they'll know what's going on, and you'll have an established communication pattern to deal with potential issues. You may even be able to coordinate schedules to that you can get what you need, without upsetting their lives unduly. You have rights too, and while no impact workouts are great, they may not be the best choice for you.
And never underestimate the power of a simple walk! A good, vigorous walk is an excellent workout, and is usually appropriate in the vast majority of weather situations with the right gear!
I did have complaints from my downstairs neighbours about my workouts, so I asked them what times are least likely to disturb them and stuck to them. I haven't had any complaints since, and they smile at me when I see them, so I guess it worked?

I second the person who said putting down a carpet can make a difference. I went to the dollar store and bought some padded mats (like the playmats you can put together for kids), then put a yoga mat over that. I have yet to receive any noise complaints for when I do walking videos or videos involving jumping! Otherwise, if you can't wear headphones while exercising, put Closed Captioning on your workout videos of choice so you can read the instructions if the volume's a tad low.
I have the same problem... I reside on second floor of a three story apartment building and was contacted by Mgt. in September for noise disturbance from the downstairs unit. I now work out between 5pm-6pm instead of 5am and use Bob Harper Pure Burn Super Strength DVD twice a week... tons of squats and lunges. I just make sure both feet are planted on floor (no jumping). If weather permits I get outside to run otherwise I pop in my Zumba DVD and lightly dance away.

Hi there, I don't live in an apartment but I have 4 kids and my husband. I have a basic exercise bike that uses magnets to increase the tension - it is so quiet! (Purchased at Sears). I usually reward myself by saving my recorded tv shows for when I exercise - I keep the volume off and use close captioning. Best wishes to you on your journey!

This is something I have struggled with over the years, having lived in 2 apartments and now in an over dwelling. You have had the best tips already; talk to your neighbours, and choose times accordingly I have used resistance bands in the past and Pilates is great doesnt help much with cardio, but I do like the idea of the mini trampoline mentioned earlier

Not too early, not too late -- it is all relative. People who are on shifts don't have the same hours as "traditional" 8-4, 7-3, 9-5. So I agree: to a certain extent, get to know your neighbors. I used a mini-trampoline strung with bungee cords instead of wire springs, with great results. All the cardio I needed, without the fear of disturbing neighbors OR anyone else in the household. Because strength training has such a positive impact on wellness results, putting an emphasis on strength, which usually is relatively quiet, except for plyometric moves, is an ideal use of your home / apartment workout time.

I agree - talk to your neighbor, give them your number, and have them let you know if it is a problem. Better they come directly to you before they call the manager or the police. Taking them a plate of cookies may help, too!

Lift weights, do resistance band workouts, do yoga, pilates, do low-impact exercises. Fitness Blender has a youtube channel full of free workouts and many of them have low impact alternatives to their cardio workouts.
Some exercises you can do:
push-ups, squats, lunges, planks, tricep dips, Russian twists, hip bridges, pull/chin ups, lateral hip extensions,

If you have a laptop or streaming service, Youtube has a bunch of "silent" exercise videos just for apartment dwellers. I haven't tried any of them yet, so can't recommend a specific one, but might be a good place to start.
Unless you're banging around during weird hours, doing a workout DVD shouldn't be an issue. Like others said, you can avoid tromping around during normal sleep hours, but a typical workout shouldn't be causing that much noise.

When you live in an apartment there's going to be noise from those around you. As long as you do your workouts during "normal" hours ie: not at midnight or 5am, it really shouldn't be an issue for anyone.

I recently moved into the 2nd floor of a 3 floor apartment building. As in any apartment, I can usually hear some of the neighbors activity, and I try to not be too loud as to disturb them. I'm worried about doing work out dvds in my apartment, but with winter coming it seems inevitable.
Do you guys have any tips for working out in an apartment when you're super worried about the noise you will make?
