I am totally Team Popcorn when it comes to salty cravings. I might spritz a little olive oil and salt, or garlic powder, or even hot sauce.

We vegans have a secret for dairy cravings - nutritional yeast tastes cheesy and is great on popcorn. Added benefits of nutritional yeast include protein (it's a complete protein) and vitamin B12. Try it!

I have been feeling hungry a lot and the dr. said to eat more fats like avocados, nuts and cheese. Plus I should increase my protein. I am bummed because I go over my calories almost everyday. Tomorrow is a new day. Have a good evening. emoticon

Sometimes a craving is for something other than food, like comfort or entertainment. (I am really bored at work right now, and I would really like to rummage in the cabinets and get something to eat.)

Sometimes the craving means that you are missing something in your diet. Sometimes people crave ice or even rocks when they are low on iron, for example.

Now that you are eating less, you might have to eat more nutrient dense foods to get the same nutrition. Try cranking up the amount of nuts and leafy greens you are eating, and see if that makes a difference.

I've been working on modified fasting - that is not eating between 7 pm and 11 am. (This actually is working better for me that the shorter fast of not eating between 8 pm and 8 am.)

Here's another idea. Plan for the 2 am snack. If you sleep through it, great! Otherwise, have a bowl of grapes, or a 1/4 cup of mixed nuts on the counter ready to go if you happen to wake up.

My tracker is set up for a range of 1200-1500, and I manage 1400-1600 most days. I am not sure if that is the right zone for me, but I am trying to reset my eating habits. I came from 2000-2500 cal/day and gaining 5lbs a month. I may have cut back too much, thus the cravings.

CONTRARYWIFE,

Here's something to keep in mind. 1500 calories isn't written in stone. If you set up your nutrition tracker, you should have a range of say 1400-1800. That's because some days, you genuinely may need to eat more than others.

take my day today. I'm eating more today because I spent two hours shoveling snow. so, my body is craving calories to replenish those that I used shoveling.

If you have a very active day, you will need to eat a bit more than on days you're more sedentary. And that is perfectly normal.

Thanks for the responses.

I try to avoid dairy, since I am lactose intolerant but it is one of the things I crave. I had dinner about 4 hours prior, pot roast with carrots, mushrooms, 1 potato, and vegetable "gravy". It left me satisfied at the time (~600cal). I had some herbal tea (1 tsp sugar) about 2 hours after dinner, I was cold. At that point I was over my 1500 cal for the day and I think my Anxiety was starting to kick in. I had some crackers and a slice of deli ham which was ~200cal and did the trick.

I try not to eat right before bed, but sometimes if I don't I wake up hungry at 2 or 3 am and I have no self control at that hour.

CONTRARYWIFE,

Nuts (which are a good source of protein and heart healthy fat) can be a decent choice for a late night craving. Just be mindful of the portion size.

Also, when was your last meal ? Depending on when you ate and what, some times a craving isn't really a craving, but thirst. You might try sitting and sipping a nice cup of hot tea like chamomile or peppermint.

Something that takes longer to digest, like cheese which has more fat.

Having a tough time tonight, craving chips and some dip. Anything. Sushi. Chicken wings. Parmesan fries. I need a bed time snack that I won't regret, and won't keep me up half the night with indigestion.
