I have fun with scam callers. Sometimes, I'll just casually ask them: "Have you heard of the National Do Not Call Registry?" Other times, I will sing- usually something silly like "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" or my own little tune about being on the do not call registry.

On one occasion someone called trying to sell a long distance plan.

My wife said that would be great if she only had a phone, to which they said "what are you talking on now?"

She answered "I don't understand it either." and at that point they figured they were talking with a crazy person, and the conversation ended.

E, one of the fireman spoke fluent German, so he kept the solicitor on the line for a good fifteen minutes trying to get her to communicate with him. Another time, one was able to get the guy to talk for 20 minutes about the product for his skin when the fireman said he suffered from psoriasis (true) and would that help.
Once I remember, he said that one pretended to be a small child and kept talking about mom and dad while the solicitor was attempting the "kid" to go get mom or dad. I'm sure there are many others that I have long forgotten.

As soon as I determine they're selling something, I just lay the phone down and let them talk to the desk. That lets me waste some of their time with no further investment of my own time.

That's a great idea! I think I may try that when a "real" person calls, LOL!

I have a friend who is a fireman, and when they are all sitting waiting to go out on a call, they keep their cell phones out. They each throw in ten dollars. When a telemarketer calls one of them, they see how long they can keep them on the line. The guy/girl who can keep them on the longest wins the money. Some hilarious calls there!

I once was told to ask for their phone number and what time they had dinner and I would call them back at that time if they would like.

All really good suggestions in these posts. Find out what works best for you and impacts your stress level the least and stick with it. What has amazed me is how in the past year or so solicitors have commandeered local numbers to make you really want to answer. I no longer do and have only gotten one message after dozens of such calls (it was from my Vet whose office has one line that show "private" for some reason). When I'm really curious I do use a tracking tool and invariably it reveals scam or phishing or something similar. As for political robo calls I don't get them. I believe this may be in that I'm registered "No Party Affiliation" and in PA not allowed to vote in primaries. Or the National Do Not Call list kicks in for these type calls. Never heard of a bogus call coming up "emergency" though. That's really sad and unsettling.

Use your phone blocking feature. You can block them without even answering it. I do it all the time to numbers I do not recognize.
Our personal phone numbers are all over the internet now, so they aren't going to stop anytime soon, I suspect.

The calls I dislike the most are the ones I get during the elections. It's not like I get one per day, some days I'd get 5-6 from campaign workers asking if I'll vote for x, y or z.

Having worked the phones, I know what a miserable job it is. However, if I do take a call, I usually say,"no thank you".

I think what annoys me are the callers whose number appears as "emergency". My town sends out calls when there is a snow alert and that does say emergency. One time, I picked up a call that said emergency thinking it was from my town emergency service. Nope. it was a robo telemarketer. How sleazy is that ?

I do answer all calls. I do always say something. I'm never nasty, even if I hang up.

Recently we've gotten a few calls, that when I answer, they ask to speak with the home owner.

I'm thinking, ... do I say that I'm renting? Maybe next time.

I answer all calls, altho' a couple times I had been tempted to NOT answer them because of suspicion. It turned out I was right to answer them ... they were actually very important calls.

When people call you, they don't know you are preparing a meal, walking out the door or having a shower, etc. There isn't any need to be rude, but just say 'no thanks' and hang up. I have only had ONE person call back (those international calls telling you they are phoning from "Windows") asking why I hung up. I told him that it was because he was spouting was bullsh*t and I didn't want to talk with him, then hung up again. At the time there was a businessman with me going through a contract, and he was stunned that the person actually phoned back. He had never heard of it before.

Remember you can control this situation, do not answer the phone if you don't recognize the number.

Also, as much as you may not like getting the call, there may be someone in the other side that hates making the call just as much, but they need a roof over their head, food on their plate, pay for additional medical costs, or trying to support a family. You don't know their situation.

Be kind, just don't answer and maybe say a prayer for the person that called. Put your faith into action.

I am with Archi on this one. If I don't recognize the number, I don't answer the phone. Shockingly, they don't leave messages.

I see both sides of the picture. I currently work a call center job. People call in to me and sometimes, if they don't like what I have to say, they are incredibly nasty. Thankfully, if they start swearing and such, I can warn them to stop. If they continue, I can end the call.

I also hate marking scams. I never answer the phone if it's an unknown number. With the rise of cell phones, there are plenty of phishing scams. Unsavory people are able to use technology to create numbers that appear to close to your own to make it look like a neighbor.

That's funny to me because the area code for my phone is for Minneapolis, Richfield, and, well, cell phones; I don't actually live in Minneapolis. So, the chances of my neighbor having a 612 number is likely I suppose if they have a cell phone but the area code for landlines in my city is not 612.

Plus, the chances of them having a number that is a digit or two off from mine is slim to none. That could honestly be true if it was just landlines I suppose. However, reality says something different. Growing up, my neighbors didn't have numbers that were a digit or two different. The area code was the same, the prefix (middle 3 numbers) would have been one of 2 options, and then the last four digits. So, the chance of a neighbor having a number where one or two of the last 4 digits being different were low. The phone company doesn't assign numbers to a house; it assigns as people request a number and never have I lived in a house where I moved in at the exact same time as a neighbor. I also know they can use their programs to hack numbers to appear to be from Minnesota in general.

Because of the above and as others have said, I don't answer unknown numbers. Period. If it is legitimate, the person will leave a message.

I also have found an app called Mr. Number. If you copy and paste an unknown number into it, it can tell if it's a probable scam. It isn't 100% with unknown numbers but is good, especially since my carrier doesn't necessarily notify me if it's a possible scam like some carriers do.

Guys, I know it's annoying but they're just people doing their job. There's no need and no reason to be rude to them. I've had to make sales calls and trust me, it's the most horrible thing in the world, people can be SO rude :-/
Saying "I'm not interested, but thanks anyway :D" in a nice tone doesn't take much effort... you can just block the number after that.

This happens to me all the time. If I don't recognize the number, I don't answer the phone. If it's something important, the person can leave a message and I will call them back immediately.

I agree-- very annoying. They always seem to call when I'm in the middle of something. The way I look at it, I pay for my phone for MY convenience (not unsolicited callers) and as soon as they start talking I say "no" or "not interested" and hang up.

I've answered unsolicited callers with very short answers, and hung up, not giving them a chance to even get to line two.

I was busy getting lunch ready when my mobile phone rang non stop. I answered because I thought it was my boss. But it turned out to be some marketing person either trying to sell something or do a survey. I don't do any surveys unless I get paid and doing it on the phone virtually guarantees you won't get paid for your time and trouble. I'm soooo mad right now. How intrusive!!!! I just hung up after saying no to her question "May I take up a few minutes of your time?"! What makes them think they can harass ppl during lunch time!!!!

And how did they get my number!?
