EOWYN,

Pick a day as your starting point. If you've gone seven days without going to McDonalds or any other fast food chain, that's a great start. One week done.

Can you go a second week ? No McDonalds ? No Burger King ? No KFC ? No fast food of any kind for one week, seven days.

Eating at McDonalds will make you FAT and OLD looking.

Eating lots of fresh fruit and veggies will make you lean and young looking !

I m so proud of myself! Yesterday my boss went thru the Mcdonald's drivethru after work. She offered to treat me but I said no thanks. The smell of her meal was tempting but I didn't even pinch her fries!

And when I reached the mall after taking 2 trains, I didn't even grab any snacks but went straight to the bus stop to take a bus home! I m so glad I did because my Mom cooked my fave fried fish (black pomfret) with fried shredded ginger, chillies and soy sauce. My Mom only uses low sodium soy sauce. She also cooked seafood sambal!

My parents were waiting for me to eat dinner. I would have hurt my Mom's feelings if I didn't eat her cooking. So I m glad I resisted and waited till I got home!

Elaine - I was very stable with my weight, and then one night I had bacon for dinner. I don't often eat it, and that is basically my 'heavy sodium food' but even then, I don't normally reach the recommended sodium level. Anyway, I ate bacon for dinner ... about 80g. The next day I had to weigh at the Dr's .... that bacon alone .... nothing else, caused me to gain 900g overnight. There was absolutely nothing else contributing to it. It took nearly 3 days to come back down to my normal weight. THAT is how much a salty food can affect a person's weight. When you eat it a bit more often, it IS going to affect your weight even more. You, more so than most, because of your renal situation.

Continue with those salty foods, and you will NOT get your body weight down to where it needs to be re your dialysis. Don't complain when the nurses bitch at you, because you are doing it to yourself!!!

The next time you crave McDonalds or some other junk food, remember this.

Eat McDonalds, get FAT.

Eat fresh fruit and veggies, get LEAN.

EOWYN,

What's a breakfast biscuit ? In the UK, what they call a biscuit, we call a cookie. There are so called breakfast cookies/biscuits, that are supposed to be a substitute for a meal. but they aren't exactly what I'd call healthy.

Is that all the servings of fruit/veggies you ate yesterday ? some stir fry veggies and two pieces of mango ?

Do you want to know what helped me lose weight ? Eating more servings of fresh fruit and veggies. Because you're on dialysis, you do have to be careful which ones you eat. But if you want to lose weight, you need to eat more servings of fresh fruit and veggies.

Do you know, that if you were to eat fresh fruit for a snack, you wouldn't crave McDonalds or BK ? The reason you keep craving the junk is because you're not eating enough fresh fruit and veggies. If you were to eat more of the fruit/veggies you can eat per your renal dietitian, you WILL lose weight.

It's Wednesday and I haven't had any ice cream or fast food. I wasn't too heavy at dialysis today because I limited my fluids while I was at work yesterday. My boss offered to get me noodles for breakfast but I just stuck to my breakfast biscuits. For lunch I just had stir fried veggies with a little chicken with plain white rice. I actually wanted fried rice but decided against it because of the fat content. On the way home I just had a serving of steamed fish balls. I rushed to Bible Study last night but before I got home, I grabbed a sandwich from the supermarket. It was a chicken slice sandwich with egg and cheese, small portions. At Bible study, I had 2 pcs of fresh mango and half a curry puff. Then, bcoz I was sooo hungry after Bible study, I had a slice of bread with margarine and a little bovril, a pack of breakfast biscuits and 2 small vegan rusks.

All in all I didn't do too bad at dialysis today, I managed to achieve my dry weight. For lunch today, I had some noodles but I didn't finish the noodles. I got a salmon puff for tea. Which means I will be eating less for dinner today. I also got a curry puff for my Dad, my treat! Tomorrow's Thursday, 4 more days to go!

EOWYN,

You've been making the same mistakes over and over and over. If you really are ready to lose weight, STOP THE MADNESS.

Set some simple goals for ONE WEEK, not a fortnight or a month. ONE WEEK.

For one week, I will not go to McDonalds, KFC, Burger King or any other fast food chain for a snack, ice cream or meal.

For one week, I will walk 5,000 steps each day.

For one week, I will SIP from my water bottle.

For one week, I will eat a small salad with lunch or dinner.

For one week, I will not eat any food with cheese in it.

Are these things you can do for one week ?

I guess I like the crunch and I love the way it tastes. I also love cheese too much! I love the ooey goey ness of cheese on lasagne or pizza. I also love salty snacks like potato chips and cheese puffs. When it comes to snacks, though I love ice cream too, I am more of a salty person. I love salty snacks.

Archii, I can do better! I will aim not to have any junk or fast food for a fortnight! I just can't go on like this anymore! It's time to slim down and get healthy!

EOWYN,

I have a challenge for you.

In your own words, describe how much you enjoy eating at McDonalds or BK or KFC. What is it that you really enjoy about eating a McDonalds Big Mac or crispy chicken dinner from KFC ?

Why is it that you love fast food so much when you know all it does is cause you to gain weight and to bloat. There must be a reason you love it so much that you have such a hard time saying,"no thank you" when someone offers to buy you lunch at McDs.

EOWYN,

How long have you been able to last without fast food ? Every time you say you're not going to eat fast food ever again, you end up eating it. Then you say, oops, my bad. Instead of saying, no more fast food meals, let's try this.

I will set a goal to not eat at any fast food chain (McDs, BK, KFC, etc) for ONE WEEK.

Can you go ONE WEEK without any trips to a fast food chain for any meal ? It means if your parents say they are paying to buy KFC for dinner, you have to say,"no thank you".

It's time to face reality. You're never going to lose the weight if you don't give up fast food.

No more fast food meals. Just wholesome mixed rice. Plain boiled rice with veggies and steamed tofu or fish. Or noodles, in soup or stir fried.

Take the stairs instead of the escalator. Make sure I get in at least 20 minutes of vigorous exercise! HIIT some days, go for walks when it's not too hot. Or do youtube videos. And also some bodyweight ST.

For snacks, nothing fried or salty, veggies and fruit only. No more chocolates, nougat or ice cream.

EOWYN,

Kris is right. You need to start by setting some simple goals that will slowly help ease you into healthier eating habits. We've always encouraged you to stop eating those salty snacks. We've also encouraged you to eat more servings of fresh fruit and veggies.

You know what happens when you say you'll never eat any salty snacks ? You do it for a week, then your mother says she'll buy you lunch at McDonalds and you're eating the junk again. This is no good.

If you really want to take the weight off and keep it off, you need to stay away from the junk food. In order to do that, you need a PLAN. that's something you don't have right now.

Just start with some simple changes you can stick to ! Tell me, what are some healthy snacks you have to eat instead of the salty junk food ?

Elaine .... you have not learned the lessons you SHOULD have learned a very long time ago. How long will it take before you realize that you can't get a different result without making changes ..... LONG TERM changes.

It is one thing to have it in your mind, but you have to learn to put theory into practice. I don't really think that you WANT to improve your health, in spite of your protestations.

My Dad pointed out to me that I have gained 2kgs during the Christmas & CNY season. My dry weight used to be 60kgs. Now it's 62kgs.

I am desperate!!!! I have to completely cut out the sodas, nuts, chips, fish crackers, burgers, pizzas and other junky fatty foods like that. No more ice cream either! I have been too lax with myself! No more treats!!!!

I will only eat roasted or boiled or steamed or stir fried with minimal oil from now on! So many of my clothes don't fit anymore! I do have some that still fit but enough is enough! Time to slim down and get healthy!!!!!

EOWYN,

If you want to fit back into your Levi's, you need to try to switch the salty snacks for the fresh fruits you can eat.

I remember you saying that it is okay to eat an orange. Why don't you buy some oranges ? Put them into the refrigerator and let them get cold. Eating a cold orange would be a refreshing snack on a hot day. It would certainly be more refreshing than a portion control snack of chips/crisps.

One day, you'll get to a point when you think the orange is yummier than the potato chips or salty snacks.

The weather has been really horrible lately! With the heat reaching 34 to 36 degrees Celcius! But I am determined to stay off the salty junk and to limit my fluids. I haven't had a burger in soooo long. Too high in fat & sodium! I've been opting for healthier options for most of my meals. I do take snacks sometimes but in small portions.

I suppose I shld try harder in order to fit into my levis! I need to eat clean & exercise regularly. At the same time I still have to limit my fluids.

I managed to acheive my dry weight today but I can and will do better!

@CELTICLASSINLA - my sister has Sjorgren's Syndrome as well (as many other things. I suggested that she use Lemon flavoured Glycerine Mouth Swabs. She has found them very helpful for the dry mouth.

Hi Elaine - I know what it is like to have a thirst that cannot seem to be quenched. I have (among other things ;-) ) Sjorgren's Syndrome which causes painfully dry mouth and eyes. I can drink gallons of water and it doesn't help - so a different problem but still one to address.

To try and stimulate salliva which makes me less thirsty, I suck on sugarless mints or rinse my mouth with plain water and well, spit. Sorry to be so blunt but it does work for me.

I do not perspire at all so I overheat - if you do sweat a lot however, get a small personal fan (battery operated) and use it - as the sweat evaporates you also are less thirsty.

You've been so careful - remember whatever you are doing you are doing for you.

I was thinking about you, Elaine, this morning during my 10 mile race. I was wondering if on the days when the weather isn't conducive to sweatier workouts, like when it's hot, humid, stormy, can you maybe focus on doing some gentle workouts like yoga or pilates? Or maybe do a shorter one? Maybe this will help you keep your thirst down.

good to see you back here, Elaine. What jumpstarted my efforts again was cutting everything I was eating in half. What a difference! Broke my plateau. I know fluids are more of an issue for you. Sometimes if you just hold whatever you are drinking in your mouth a few seconds before swallowing seems to quench my thirst.

Elaine, Elaine, Elaine...your most recent post makes me think you might be slipping back into the habits you know you shouldn't follow. You have recently seen the benefits of how well it works when you follow the drinking and eating plan you need to follow to stay healthy.

Don't go down the rabbit hole of excuses (blaming weather, sweaty exercise, etc). Your life literally depends on it.

Sometimes I know that I shouldn't be drinking so much but sometimes you just want and have to drink! Esp cold, iced drinks on a hot day. The crazy Malaysia weather isn't helping either! We are suffering from extreme heat in the mornings and early afternoons and we have thunderstorms at nights and late evenings! That's on MOST days!

When it gets sooo hot, you just want to drink! I particularly suffer after I have exercised and have sweated a lot, I'm just want to gulp down lots of water but I force myself to take small sips! Sigh!

What steps will you take to do better? And what happened between dialysis sessions? What will you do to prevent it in the future? Remember how good it feels to meet those dialysis goals. I know you can do better too! emoticon

Elaine,
that is great. I find that working is partly making some money, but its partly getting out of the rut of sitting at home and getting depressed.

Of course not everyone has that "luxury" of doing nothing and sitting at home. But it gets old very fast.

Glad you are active!

That's fantastic news, EOWYN !

I'm thrilled that your boss has asked you back. I know it's only part time, but the extra money will be nice. Put a little aside. It sounds like the work is seasonal i.e. some times of the year are busier than others.

But that's okay, even if you were to only work for six months out of a year, that's still some extra money in your pocket.

As far as lunch, bring along plenty of healthy snacks so that you're not tempted to go to McDonalds. In fact, could you bring along something for the both of you ? Why not treat your boss to a homemade lunch one day ? Tell her that you'll make lunch for her. There are lots of great inexpensive meals you could make that you'd both enjoy.

That is really great, Elaine. Just remember, don't go doing the lunch thing with her because you KNOW that you end up overdoing the liquids as well as the food. Make sure that she is aware of this and keep reminding her if you have to.

I've got my old job back! I just have to be careful not to drink so much. That's means I've cut my cups of tea. I only have half a glass per meal. And my small 300ml bottle in case I get too thirsty. That's all.

Work is going great! I love my boss! She is soooo nice!

Dear Elaine,
I am so happy to see you back. I read other people’s posts about worrying about you, and then I got worried, too. It sounds like you have your health situation well under a control you can live with.
How can any of us be supportive of you? I realize you’re only online in very limited ways, so I don’t expect tp hear from you directly. I’m just so happy you’re OK.
With Love,
Beth. (NYINME)

Great News!!!!

I tired eating lighter meals and really, really watching my fluids.

Well, guess what! Today my weight gain was only 1.3kg!!!!

They set my target at 1.7kg only. My bp never dropped and I felt FANTASTIC!!!!

THIS is the way to do dialysis. From now on I am eating lighter and drinking less!!!

Whooo Hoooo!!!!!

Welcome back, Elaine.

I think that sometimes being away from something for a while gives us time to reflect on what is important, what is beneficial and what isn't. It also gives time to start to learn new habits .... and hopefully good ones LOL!

BIG hugs,
Kris xxx

Welcome "home"... emoticon

Having some time away from Spark actually isn't a bad thing. It gives one time to reflect and gain some perspective into the "Why's, What's, and When's" to spend time on computer during this Journey... rather than just an additive time spent not really helping yourself to a better place. Points are fun...but do they help you reach better health? (Not necessarily...!)

Just as balance is important in eating... balancing your time and attention on other Life activities keeps our spirits strong and at peace. Find the best path for you!!

I am back! It's me! Elaine. I am keeping a low profile this time. I will only be on SP when I am alone in my room or during dialysis. So my parents won't know.

I miss you peeps! I didn't realize so many ppl care! Thank you!

No more lies this time! In the past I have racked up sparkpoints even though I didn't achieve those goals. And we all know I can't drink 8 glasses of water a day due to being on dialysis!

I have to set up my Sparkpage and all that again but it's good to be back!

Hugs,

Hello, Spark Peeps !

Elaine/Eowyn sent along an email to let everyone know how she's doing.

My fluid control is much better now, I am trying my best to keep my fluid gain to 3kg and below. And it wasn't as hard as I might have feared, I just needed to be mindful of the amount and frequency of my drinks. I don't drink in huge gulps anymore but sips.

To keep the fluid intake down, I take ice cubes if I'm really thirsty but want to limit my fluids. I have also cut down on salty snacks and soups. I'm reading labels diligently and carefully now, if it's high is sodium, I make myself put it down, no matter how delicious it seems.

Lately, I've also cut down my extra drinks of coffee and tea to further control my fluids. I only allow myself a small cup of sugarless coffee on dialysis days.

I am also controlling my phosphate and potassium levels. No more freely eating foods high in phosphate and potassium. I can only have a taste, not gorge myself silly!

I have also been exercising regularly. My weight may have gone up a little but I honestly think I've gained muscle! But I STILL have a long way to go. But I'm getting there!

Much Love,
Elaine (formerly Eowyn2424)
