Please have your friend get tested for Cushings Disease, just to rule it out. It's a simple blood test. Symptoms include ravenous hunger and thirst. It's a disease of the adrenal gland and is treatable.

When I joined Spark People, I weighed 129 lbs. I'm an 18 year old female and I'm 5'3". I set my weight loss goal to be 10-19 lbs.

He should be taken to a doctor to rule out medical conditions that lead to huge appetite. I have rather poor satiety because of birth defects.

He should learn about proper portion sizes and proper meal sizes. When I joined Spark People, it was an eye opener for me to discover that I've been eating more food than I need.

He could also be an emotional eater. Before I joined Spark People, I used to put extra food into my mouth to keep busy and/or deal with emotions.

He should also track how much water he is drinking. When I joined Spark People, I realized that one reason why I almost always felt like eating is because I had dehydration. On the flip side, I decided to save the soda pop and fruit juices for drinking only on special occasions and drinking only in sample size sips because sweet beverages add calories without providing the benefit of satiety.

I would also recommend that he stick to a structured daily eating schedule of 3 meals per day without snacking or grazing. When I joined Spark People, I realized that constant grazing on snacks makes it difficult to keep track of how much food someone is eating in a day.

I was wondering how your friend is doing? I read a study that tested overweight adults and found that it took a lot longer than 20 minutes that it takes normal adults to feel full. It took 45 minutes to feel the effects of eating. So I know from my own experience after 10 minutes I would eat more never mind waiting 20 or 45 minutes. Not sure if this would help or not. Just thought I would share.

SLIMERKIWI (Kris),
that is true, I forgot that the body can confuse thirst for hunger, and in that case you can eat, and still not have satisfied the underlying thirst.

I would strongly encourage him to talk about this with his Dr so that the Dr can determine whether it is something medical causing this. He should also be referred to a Registered Dietitian.

Without knowing what he eats we can't really give suggestions as to how he should change his diet, but ensuring that he is getting a few serves of fruit/veges in a day, as well as some healthy fats (e.g. nuts, avocado, olive oil, rice bran oil, hummus) and quality carbs from sources such as wholegrains (including wholegrain pasta and brown rice) along with a good amount of lean protein, then his hunger would abate.

The other thing is that as well, it may be he THINKS he is hungry, but could be confusing it with thirst.

I would suggest that he should join SP and log his food, but if he doesn't then he needs to keep a diary of what he eats and when he eats it, and as much as possible, how much (weights are very accurate) and then note, also, when he gets hungry. He needs to take this with him to the Dietitian because it will be invaluable.

Good luck to him, and well done you for wanting to help your friend.

Take care,
Kris

Has he been to a doctor? There may be a medical reason behind this.

PATNELSON007,
I'm a type-2 diabetic, so I look at all food in terms of carbohydrates and blood sugar.

The foods you listed, fruit and pizza have this fraction of their weight as carbs (and a few others for reference):

- sugar (100%)
- potato chips (45%)
- pizza (30%)
- bananas (20%)
- apple (11%)
- bell peppers (5%)
- cheddar cheese (1.3%)
- chicen (0%)

I tend to eat from the lower end of the scale. But if you don't feel full even right after eating that is another story.

PATNELSON007,

Eating the wrong foods can cause a person to be hungry even after eating what could be perceived as a large meal.

Example, muffins. People believe that having a muffin is a healthy choice for breakfast, but it isn't really. Muffins are high in sugar and fat. If you eat one, you may be satisfied for about 30 minutes because of the sugar rush. But the minute that sugar spike is over and your blood sugar crashes, all you want is another energy boost.

The goal is to find that right combination of foods that helps keep our blood sugar levels stable. If your young friend is eating a lot of junk such as muffins, too much pizza, french fries, burgers with a ton of ketchup, fried chicken, etc... that's why he wants to eat after already eating. the food isn't filling. It doesn't have fiber. it has too much sugar.

These are things a person learns with time. It's taken me years to learn what good nutrition really is.

If your friend is ready to make a change (and this does have to be his decision), then you can encourage him to start with some simple changes first. Don't do anything radical or he'll give him. Have hm start slowly if he's ready to start. One simple thing he can do is eat more servings of fresh fruit and veggies. Instead of eating a candy bar as a snack, have him eat a piece of fruit like a pear or an apple. Eating more fresh fruit will help decrease any cravings for highly refined sugary treats.

What is he eating now ? My guess is burgers, fries, pizza... He probably doesn't cook for himself. So he's probably eating a lot of Chinese or Mexican takeout. Let's say he really loves Chinese take out, one simple thing he can do is swap out the fried rice for either steamed white rice or steamed brown rice. He can have a shrimp stir fry instead of general gao chicken.

And most important, if he gets a take out, he only eats half for lunch. He can have half for dinner or save the other half for lunch the next day. One Chinese take can feed 2-3 people, not one.

That's another thing that takes time to learn. Portion control. He probably doesn't even realize he's eating too much. None of us knew. It's something you learn with time.

I used to be the same. For me (I'm not saying the same is true for your friend), it was because of emotional eating. I used food to fill my emptiness. But of course, food can never do that - but it does make you feel numb to a point where you just don't care anymore. Because the stomach stretches out a bit each time you overeat - when you don't overeat frequently, it won't do much harm - the stomach gets bigger and bigger which will also require you to eat more and more to achieve that same level of numbness. So he should gradually start to eat less. If he would jump from a high calorie count a day to 500+ calories less, that wouldn't be good. I would start with 100 calories less and lower it by 100 every week. He won't notice the difference much in the beginning but will see a weight loss pretty quickly. That will keep him motivated :)
Good luck and I hope your friend will join you. Having a helping buddy is always easier.

I think he eats a wide variety of things, lots of fruit, lots of pizza (he's a student)! He just never feels full even right after eating!

What sort of food does your friend eat? I find that fatty things satisfy my hunger, so like steak with fatty parts, or cheese.

I find that high carb things mess with my blood sugar and I'm soon hungry.

He says he can eat and eat and is still starving. He's 6' and weighs 250 pounds. I have tried to get him to join SP but he is hesitating. I think he's only 21.

Anybody got any suggestions? Eating slowly, drinking lots of water, these things do not help.
