Depression is a mental state in which the person feels isolated and lacks the fun part of his life. If you ask me for a simple definition I would rather say that it is the inability to enjoy the life to its fullest. A depressed person lacks the skill of smiling, laughing and dealing with people around him. Depression really becomes a menace if it is not dealt with properly. The foremost essential in this regard is to realize that you are actually going through depression. The best remedy rests with the depressed. Instead of going on medication immediately it is better to start doing little chores to keep away the depression. URBANREDNEK you have really done a great job. By just mentioning a few easy to follow steps you have made it possible to fight back the depression. For those suffering from depression, the intercourse with nature is a great help. Cherish the wonders of nature and make your life colorful. Start spending time with your loved ones. Avoid situations that make you feel depressed. Stay active by keeping yourself busy in creative activities. Don't underestimate your strength.

From your ticker, it looks like you are at the beginning of doing a major overhaul on your lifestyle, and I can tell you from experience that doing that in retirement can be much easier (since you have the time), but in some ways more difficult (since you don't have the social support from just being around co-workers). Keep some notes on your own personal feelings and reactions, and use those notes to plan for changes that will make things easier and better for yourself.

A couple of things that work well for me:

- setting up an indoor herb garden, and getting some tomato plants started from seeds for a summer container vegetable garden (futzing around with it gives me something useful to do, the necessary lights act like SAD treatment lights and keep me more cheerful, and I get to add delicious fresh home-grown flavours to my meals - all win!)

- I refused to "diet", and refused to drop to what I considered ridiculously low calorie levels recommended by Spark or any other site. At 5'9", I started at 250 lbs, and 1250-1500 calories sounds to me like a perfect way to mess up my metabolism permanently while stressing me out with the dedication (and hunger) that would be needed to get there. Instead, I chose 155 lbs as a reasonable target, found that the maintenance range for staying at that would be around 1650-2000 calories, and then GRADUALLY made changes from my "usual" diet until I was eating healthier foods in about the right calorie range. This approach took many, many months, but was easy and enjoyable since I really focused on ADDING new foods which were more nutritious and which I absolutely loved. No foods off limits, no angst about "cheating", and no sadness about "dieting" - just happy exploration of new foods, new preps, and new ways to move and fit exercise in to each day. (Lost almost 100 lbs over 18 months - maintained for almost 5 years now).

- I really enjoy bulk food prep, so I rarely cook only enough for one day or meal. If the oven is on, then I'm roasting a huge pan of mixed veggies, or roasting a chicken and a beef roast and a pork roast --- and then it all gets sliced and frozen to be pulled out "as needed" later. I make big batches of soups and stews - often just veggie based, and then I can add whichever type of frozen meat that I'm in the mood for later. I bake a couple of loaves of sourdough whole-grain breads at a time, and slice and freeze for putting together quick sandwiches. I'll put together big fruit salads to last at least a few days, and stew some berries and / or stone fruits, or chop up some pears and apples and bake them topped with cinnamon and ginger (the cooked fruits can be used from the fridge, or frozen for later). I love the freedom of having the freezer stocked, so that I can make fresh when I want to, but am always ready to have something quick to grab if I make a last-minute decision to head out somewhere (or am not up to cooking).

- I'm not much of a social person, but do like to feel like I'm still "contributing to society". I ended up chatting with the local seniors' centre, and meeting some folks who meet there regularly, and who really needed / appreciated me sharing some of my "batch" cooks. I do a few extra loaves of bread each week, and divvy up soups and stews in to single serves in freezer bags, and add a mix of baked / stewed fruits, and drop them off at the end of one of their weekly card games. I get to enjoy sharing my passion for making delicious and healthy foods, and they get some variety that they'd have a hard time doing for themselves.

I've got friends who are happily involved in gardening groups (they work on community gardens, and also create and maintain flower / vegetable gardens for some seniors' housing and some day-care centres), various fitness groups (one gal took up Tae Kwan Do in her 60's and learned and started teaching fencing in her 80's --- and 3 gals in their late 80's meet 3 times per week to hike some hill trails), and a few enjoy working at charity thrift / home-goods stores.

Keeping your mind sharp is critical, so share your knowledge and usable skills where you can (I learned a ton about wild food harvesting and preserving from a lovely gentleman who volunteered his time to keep folks company at the cancer treatment centre I went to). Another option is to get involved in some computer gaming --- which has been proven in studies to not just maintain but actually improve mental acuity in seniors.

It's a whole new stage of life, so grieve a little bit for the passing of the last stage, but then start experimenting with all of the new things that you now have time for to see what will bring you the most joy.

Volunteer. Find an outside event where you can connect with people with similar interests. Does your local municipality have any senior programs or centers? Is there reduced or special transportation for seniors in your area? Is there a local church that you might like, or even a local church's ministry?

As far as not being able to eat what you want anymore, why? Is there something that you can do to make what you eat closer to what you want? As in, if you want fettucine alfredo, is the fettucine or the alfredo that you want the most? If you want the pasta the most, have the pasta, but with a tomato based sauce and extra vegetables. If it's the sauce you want, have the decadent alfredo, but over broccoli or zucchini. Depending on the what and why of your dietary restrictions, pair the things that you want with the things that you should be eating. So instead of having cheese and tortilla chips you have options. Have cheese over vegetables. Have chips with salsa. Have nachos as a meal that includes meat or beans, tomatoes, onions, peppers, lettuce, avocado, so that it's actually a filling meal. Make chips from chicken skin or root vegetables. Find meals that you like and enjoy that meet your needs and your calorie ranges.

Hi
I started my diet about a week ago. It’s going o.k. I feel a bit depressed. Not sure if its because I can’t eat what I want anymore or maybe it’s the snow and I can’t go outside like I want. I don’t have a condition of depression, I just feel not myself. I am retired so I don’t see many people outside my family. Maybe I need a hobby or something. Any ideas.
