As someone who went from "being winded to run to the street corner (5 houses away)" to now; Half Ironman finisher and Marathon Runner. My best advise is Go slow in your mileage build up and make sure you have good shoes. Run 1 minutes walk 3, then build from there. You should never go more than 10% of your distance from the prior week.

To protect your legs, knees, hips etc; make sure you have good shoes. Trade them out every 300 miles and be diligent about it.

You can do it! If you need any other info, please ask!

I would start slow and try one of the challenges here on Spark. I would also check with my doctor for advice and see if there are any restrictions. Here's a link to the challenge page. They have one for walking, a walk/jog challenge as well as a 5k running challenge. www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/challenge.asp
Looks like a good way to meet your goals emoticon

This getting older thing is tough.
I really do have to ease into it. Thanks for the tips.
I was doing HIIT while jogging with my german shepherd and one of my veins in my leg started to bleed, I noticed the swelling and bruise right away.
It was not too painful but alarming....to slow it down.
I've always had bad veins...maybe varicose like my mom, in my legs.

I started with around the block walks many years ago and found it motivated me to put a star on a calendar for each day I walked (jogged) and kept track of how many days in the row I went. Many days I went to earn a star but it got me out. Now 5 miles is easy and I added road biking up to 25 miles a go. I remember the effort to start but am delighted with how it worked out.
If I could do it so can you!

Have you tried the couch to 5k type things? It will really help you ease into it!
