If you have been planning for the past few decades, that should no be an issue.
DH also wants to be done when he quits... no going back. We have been planning for that day since our late 30s.

Thank you for your response. I am stashing some income away each month and I do have a pension plan. Medical benefits are not part of the package for me so I am investigating a personal policy to cover me, but my best decision may be to stay employed a bit longer. Anyway, thank you for your advice. I appreciate it.

My hubby retired 14 years ago and we are loving it - though my life as wife - cleaning cooking ect has not changed.

What we did to prepare was this. If you have a pension plan from where you work most of them look over the last 5 years and get your pension from that earnings. They say it is based on your best years of income - and usually that is the last 5 years. So don't neglect to make sure you 'produce' good in that time frame. And if you have had an opportunity to put money away on a monthly basis over the years you will do fine.

One big thing that we found was that we went from getting paid the 15th and the 30th of the month to only getting one cheque a month on the 30th. So you might start working on a budget along that line - if you get paid say on the 15th, just bank it, and then on the 30th you would have the 2 monthly incomes to work out your budget. I say this as that was the hardest for us to adjust to as we were used to having an income every 2 weeks.

But if you have over the years put aside for retirement not to worry - and if not do what you can from now till retirement. Must say we are loving it - all the extra time we have together is great.

I like taking opportunities to volunteer in my community and have thought about a Saturday morning read time at the local library, hospital or senior center. One of my concerns is that I would retire and then find I needed to reenter the work force. I would like to feel I can shut the door and not reopen it. I know this will take more prep time than I have put in this far. It is a lot to think about.

Hubby and I are easing into it. We are moving to Arizona this fall and will only work part time. Our hope is we will enjoy our free time bicycling, hiking, traveling. If it doesn't go as we hope, we will either go to fill time work or increase our volunteering

I want to plan wisely for my financial security but I also feel my days as a teacher are limited. The youngsters I deal with need more energy and someone who can relate to their life experience. I do want to believe I have something of value to offer them, but middle school kids today are raised in a much different culture than I was.

My sister is helpful and I think it would be lovely to travel a bit. I want to plan several 5ks to celebrate my first year off. It will be fun to spend more time visiting my daughter, too.

What are those issues, and what has you so shaken?

Retirement is great, as you do what you want in your own time.
You can lunch with your friends, see a matinee movie, take a hike whenever you care to.... the options are endless!

I have been contemplating retirement this year as I see it coming in the next couple years. Seems almost impossible as I have worked since I was fifteen. Really having some issues with entering this next phase of my life, looking forward to new experiences and opportunities and shaken at the idea of leaving what I know behind. I am certain that when the time is right I will have some plan in place, but would love to hear from others in this situation. Paula V
