This isn't a very recent article, but if you scroll down to his results for walking you'll see a big discrepancy and I doubt a lot has changed in the six years since.

www.wired.com/2012/08/fitness-trackers/

I've got a six hundred dollar watch that comes with a disclaimer about accuracy. None of them are very spot on, but most will give you a good day to day comparison. You'll find all kinds of articles regarding the variations in step counting, distance, and calorie count. I just try to go with my trend results. If the numbers I'm using don't result in better fitness or weight loss, I just figure something is off with the numbers being reported to me and inflate or deflate what I punch in accordingly. I've actually had good experience using the Spark fitness and nutrition trackers numbers for the most part and I use my watch for steps, distance, and mph, whether it's walking, running, or jogging (mine is mostly walking).

Why does the tracker on here vary so much from my GPS on my phone? A full 400 calories between my map my walk GPS app and Spark People tracker?
