The most important thing in Keto to make pounds fall off and start burning your fat, because it as burned through your low carbs, is keeping your carbs belong or just around 20 carbs a day. That's all. Do that and watch how fast you lose weight.

Congrats for doing it this way. I have found that this is the ONLY thing that makes my scale go down. ;o)

Day 51: Keto has been easier than I expected. Not wanting to get out of ketosis again it has been easier for me to say no to foods I would normally have emotional attachments to. There really is no room for cheating since it throws you out of ketosis. Ended today with 23 grams of carbs and 1144 calories.

sounds like a fabulous start, @DARETOBEBETTER It does take a while to "do" healthy fats after so much focus on avoiding it. Best wishes in finding whats best for you along your journey to achieving the results you want to see.

I am just starting keto and am gradually working towards ketosis.

My first step was to stop eating any processed foods or grains/breads. I also stopped drinking soda and concentrate on drinking more water. Made it though the first week with a mild headache and less cravings for carbs. emoticon

I just moved into step two yesterday and started tracking my fat, protein and carbs. For a first try I think I did pretty well:
Calories 1197
Protein 102 (34%)
Fat 71 (53%)
Carbs 41 (13%)

Consciously adding fat to my meals after living most of my life being told fat is bad is a real challenge.

Focusing on progress, not perfection.

yes. there are a lot of fat fast YouTube discussing science, results, actual examples of when/how people use them. it is fasting and only eating fat. interesting to hear about your results. i've not tried it yet. some folks only consume coconut oil during their fat fasts. however, as a side note, i've also seen YouTubes by various people--some just offering their own experience-based opinions, others trying to summarize research/science that too much dietary fat can knock you out of burning your own body's fat.

While catching up on my team challenges I came across someone that posted about a Fat Fast. It is not really a fat fast because you are not fasting from fats. 90% of your diet is fats. Doing this for 3 to 5 days is suppose to get you into ketosis faster. When doing Keto for the first time I just ate 20 grams or less of carbs each day and got into ketosis in 4 days. So I'm not really sure why it is necessary for that reason, however it is also recommended for a Keto plateau. Since I am currently not in ketosis and doing a food fast (refraining from eating until breakfast tomorrow) I may try this starting with breakfast if I am not in ketosis tomorrow morning just to see how it works for me.

My diet got away from me the last few days with celebrating my return home with friends, and the birthdays of my three youngest granddaughters. Today is the day to get back on track. I am fasting today, no food until tomorrow morning, to get back into ketosis quickly. My fridge and pantry have the foods I learned to eat while in Colorado. The goal is to stay on plan until Thanksgiving. Once Thanksgiving arrives I will decide my next step. I hope to be at goal by Thanksgiving. If I make it I will then need a plan to maintain.

Thanks EO4wellness, I am having a great time. My daughters and I only get together once a year because of distance so I am enjoying every minute of it. I am learning to pack my own food when we go out. Not only does it save me money but it helps to keep my on track. I'm not in Ketosis at the moment because of a few slips. Not from eating high carbohydrate foods but just from eating more than 25 carbs a day. I am skipping dinner tonight because I am at 26 carbs already. Part of that was a mistake made at church. I wasn't aware of how many carbs are in a lifesaver mint the other was having 3 deviled eggs this afternoon at a baby dedication celebration. Live and learn.

Day 33: I've been getting off track because my youngest daughter is now visiting. We have been spending a lot of time sight seeing and celebrating birthdays and such since she arrived last Wednesday which has made it slightly more difficult. She, my mom and I will be returning home in 5 days. It's been nice visiting with my oldest daughter and learning about Keto from her, but I'm looking forward to going home. My new way of eating will be more difficult for me once I get home because all the old temptations will be there. But so will my weight loss group. I will be weighing in on Monday, Aug 6th, with a big loss. I'm hoping it will be a 15 pound loss by then.

Great idea! I saw an exercise physiologist speaking recently & he recommended doing one exercise (some time during your fast day) until exhaustion---so say pushups, or squats or one thing...do it until you cannot do another rep and that works quickest.

Day 2 for me. After exercising I bent over to pick up grandsons toy and was really light headed. Other than that doing fine. Also trying Apple cider and lemon juice with water. I had a kidney stone once and do not ever want that again. 23 grams net carbs. Carrots killed my goal.

Day 27: 20 grams carbs and 1216 calories. Even went out to dinner at Gunther Toody's with family. The waitress was surprised when ordered a burger with no bun or fries. She then asked if I wanted chips or coleslaw. "No thank you, just an unsweet ice tea". Everyone else had burgers, fries and milkshakes. If felt good to stay on track. I hope it pays off tomorrow when I weigh in for round three of dietbet. I'm so close. Still 5 pounds behind for my healthywage bet though. I started keto to get caught up I was so close until this latest stall.

@FOREVERHEALTY I tried it first, before researching it and immediately suffered from keto-flu and quit. Then I educated myself more about what was going on, learned the "why" of it and now I'm very happy with the decision. It helped me feel better and change my outlook. Best wishes in finding what works best for you.

How do you get enough calories when not eating meat? With the exception of yesterday I have had a hard time hitting 1000 calories a day. I have to admit I miss veggies. When I was counting calories not carbs I would have a huge salad for lunch and large amounts of cooked veggies for dinner. Now that I am staying between 20-25 carbs a day I have difficulty getting veggies in.

I've done Keto and IF long enough to have the portions down....I can just about guess the actual ratios accurately now. Lost a TON of inches (more than 20). Then I stalled. A professor who teaches endocrinology to physicians stated it may be when we are stalled, not seeing inches lost or pounds dropped, it is because the organ fat is leaving our bodies and isn't so "measurable" by the scale or tape measure. Liked thinking about that--even if I cannot prove it.

Best wishes to everyone.

Beginning day 22. After stressing about trying to increase my caloric intake since starting this diet. I am done. Not with KETO but with trying to get more calories in. This morning I made a three egg omelet with three strips of bacon and two sausage patties. That is a big breakfast. I barely made it through half. I put the remainder away to save for tomorrow's breakfast. I am no longer going to stress about not getting 1200/1500 calories a day that everyone seems to recommend. If my body is not hungry I am not going to force food into it. I plan on having 2 hot dogs for lunch today and a burger for dinner. Maybe I'll get close but if not it is OK.

Not feeling well since early afternoon. Went out this morning to the mall, then the library. The latter is where I started to feel bad. I thought maybe it was lack of food but I have learned on this diet not to leave the house without bringing something. So I had the Atkins bar I had taken along. When we got home I had some cheese and pepperoni. About 45 minutes it was downhill from there. A glass of milk settled things down for a little while but still not feeling right. Ending the day with 18 carbs and 787 calories.

This is by far the toughest diet I have ever been on. Finally this morning I registered in Ketosis. Again a mistake not of my doing was made. We went to Chick-fil-a appreciation day for dinner this evening. I ordered and grilled chicken sandwich, I did not eat the bun, and I used a knife to put a very thin layer of barbeque sauce on my chicken. So far so good. I ordered my regular unsweet tea mixed with diet lemonade. I was only going to drink 1/4 of it and bring the remainder home for tomorrow and the following day to have with dinner. After the second or third sip I realized that something was wrong. It was mixed with regular lemonade. I exchanged it for what I originally ordered but the damage was done. A 9 oz lemonade has 21 carbs a diet has 7. When I returned home sure enough I was no longer in Ketosis. I don't know how much this is going to affect my weight. But I will watch it carefully to see what, if any, damage was done.

rough evening. Day hours went well. Attended my weight loss meeting. I usually come and have dinner afterward. But this time I went out with my daughter and was out longer than expected. I was too tired to really fix anything substantial so I ended with 17 carbs 1033 calories for the day. Will do better tomorrow.

I thought I would test for Ketosis this morning. Registered moderate. I don't know if this is normal for some people but as long as I keep losing weight I'll continue eating this way.

Yesterday was the first time the scale went up (.2). Not sure why. I'm back down again this morning. Still not in Ketosis, but at 20 grams of carbs a day I'm losing so its all good.

Another successful day. I'm really loving the weight loss with this diet. 20 grams of carbs today and just under 1300 calories. 9 pounds down since starting Keto.

Still not in Ketosis. I'm not going to concern myself with that anymore. I am losing a 1/2 pound a day. I'll take it. Even with my mess up 6 days ago I have lost a total of 8 pounds since I started this 9 days ago. I know that some of that is water. My plan is to continue to count carbs as long as the weight continues coming off. Today 20 carbs, 714 calories. I'm still working on how to get the calories closer to 1200 and stay within the carb allowance. I am starting to miss veggies. I found a whole wheat burrito that has net carbs 6 grams. I had half with tuna fish today. It's not toast but it was good.

Probably losing slowly because you are undereating. Eating too little screws up your metabolism and compromises your health.

I do well with low carb and OMAD, now I am adding 2-3 days of rest for my kidneys and liver by going low protein, no meat on those days. Going slow to see if having higher carbs on those days will defeat my main purpose of getting my BS in control. Adjustments and trial and error have been working well to simplify my eating pattern. I thank KETO and IF for getting me on this path of feeling better.

Second attempt at day four. I may have thrown myself out of ketosis again. We had company over for dinner. I tried to be careful but ended the day with 26 carbs. I didn't realize how difficult the Keto diet was going to be. I can't even mess up a little. I'll test in the morning. Regardless of the results I am not giving up yet. I'll just start over again.

I have been KETO ish trying to keep carbs under 20 until today, I'm trying to flip over and go low protein 3 days a week. Waiting to see how my BS reacts to some extra carbs today. This may be a short-lived experiment.

Day Six second attempt Day TWO. Only 17 grams of carbs but calories are a little high 1398, 108 grams of protein. A little too much carb free snacking caused the latter.

Day Five second attempt Day One. 20 grams carbohydrates and 1012 calories. I'm still trying to get used to this diet. Starting to miss vegetables. I'm used to having a large salad for lunch. I found frozen California Style Vegetables at Walmart tonight only 3 net carbs for one cup. It's a start.

Yesterday mistaken consumption of 32 grams of carbohydrates senme back to the beginning. So instead of it being day one in Ketosis I an starting over at DAY ONE. Even though it is disappointing not being in Ketosis yet I have lost 5 pounds this week. Hopefully the weight loss will continue during my second attempt to get there.

Day Four. I think I messed up today. Someone offered me a protein shake. I was told it had 60 g of protein and 2 g carbs. However hours later when I looked at the nutrition label to log it in I found that it actually had 16g of carbs. My carb count for the day is 31 (they accidentally read the sugar content) but I have only had 667 calories. I will not make that mistake again. I will always read the label for myself before eating anything. Tomorrow I will find out if I am in ketosis or not.

Just learn to listen to your body, sometimes some added Himalayan salt to your water helps and sometimes just going softly through your day is needed. Leaving carbs low can sap your energy until the body learns to burn the fat. I have good days and then I also have slow motion days. I have been told Bulletproof coffee can help to keep you level. Also, 2 tsp of Coconut Oil may give you a bit of lift. I hope you find something to help you through, I just let it play out usually.

Day Four. Feeling really sluggish this morning and a bit light headed. I have very little energy to do anything. I had hoped that I would feel better after breakfast. Except for grocery shopping which needs to be done I think this may turn out to be a couch potato day.

I’ve been eating low-carbohydrate and ketogenic for over a year. I ENJOY it! Also, for anyone who loses 3 pounds in 2-3 DAYS- that’s not FAT loss. And fat loss is what “weight” loss really is all about. Slow weight/fat loss is best. Especially considering that most people excited about losing many pounds, really fast, unfortunately gain much of it (or even more) BACK within some months to a year or so. “Getting healthy and in excellent shape is a lifestyle change. Day THREE. So far so good. I read that this diet was difficult, so far I have not had any trouble staying under 25 carbs (21 today) or exceeding 1200 calories. I also haven't had any social activities since I am not home but visiting my daughter in another state. Once I return home I'm sure there will be many challenges. I'm hoping that the weight loss this first month will be enough motivation to continue this new way of eating.

I do a mix of things, IF with low carb from the beginning, I need to stay clear of a lot of foods, processed foods are pretty well gone from my meals. I also have recently added the guidelines from Bright Line Eating. I have things that trigger me that this has helped maintain some peace around what I eat and has stopped my grazing. I posted because a KETO group caught my attention when I first changed my eating habits at the first of the year and they really are a great support and information group. I learn from them and use what I can in my day to day.

I just started the keto thing about six weeks ago. I was a carb lover, but found that if I get off the bad stuff, I don't even miss it. I look forward to information here about this. I just found test strips to test for ketones and so far I am only seeing a "trace" reading. Yes, I have slipped a few times, but still down about 17 lbs.

Finally getting my act together. Getting healthier for myself and my family. I pray I still have a whole lot of living to do.

End of day two. Again completed the day with 22 grams of carbs. I have also been able to stay in my calorie range of 1200. I ended my day with a 1/2 cup of Halo Top Mint Chocolate chip ice cream again. I'm about to plan my meals for tomorrow trying to add cashews to the menu. I haven't been able to fit them in yet.

It looks like this is not a very active board but since I am now 63 and trying this diet for the first time I'm going to hang out here for awhile to see if anyone else joins. If nothing else this will be my keto journal as long as I can find it again. Had difficulty finding this morning.
This is DAY TWO of the keto diet for me. Yesterday went very well. I even had enough carbs left over to have a 1/2 cup of Halo Top mint chocolate chip ice cream while watching Hart to Hart with my daughter. She gave me the complete series for my birthday. emoticon

Today is my first day trying the Keto Diet. Carbs are my downfall so I thought I would try something where they are off limits instead of trying to control them. I really want to get this weight off and I feel like I am my own worst enemy. So GOOD BYE carbs.

I follow KETO and love the foods I get to eat. 12 pounds down. I lose very slowly averaging about 3 pounds a month. Most people lose a lot more than that per month.

Working on ketosis (mostly carb counting) to jump-start my summer weight loss plan. It has been a delightful way to get things moving -- already 4.5 pounds over this week-end!

I don't expect to keep up this pace but clearly, jolting my body to attention was a good idea. I'm having surgery in July, so I feel like I've got roughly one month to shed some serious pounds. I have to acknowledge that my recovery (6-8 weeks) will make my life much less active, and I'll be prone to gain. So I need a secret weapon -- lose now, before the surgical procedure AND use the low carb strategy again if after the surgery, the pounds start to show up again!

Just started Keto and absolutely love the coffee with butter and coconut oil, It's delicious and gives me some of the fat I need. I do put a little Truvia in the coffee as a sweetener. Not sure if Truvia is allowed but I use it anyway. .

How many daily carbs/net carbs do you work with?

Hi all! Happy to find an over 50 board. There are definitely some unique challenges to losing weight when you are "a certain age!" It is with yearning, and a wistful air, that I recall the old days, when I could fast for a day and lose 3 pounds! Yes, that was a long time ago!

So. I'm trying keto. I know many people, of various ages that have been successful with this diet. I admit it is difficult to suppress my skepticism about a diet that allows bacon, red wine, cheese, and butter, but these are all some of my favorite foods, so I figured it is worth a try!

-10 lbs so far, so I am encouraged, though not yet convinced. Water weight, and all that ...

Anyone else trying this method? Would love to hear your thoughts, success, tips, and recipes!
