I was a member for several years early into my weight loss phase of my journey. I found it comforting to be able to talk frankly about my struggles with food and have people who understood that struggle personally. I made some very good friends there. Eventually I moved on. OA does state that it is not a diet club, it is a spiritual 12 step program. When I stopped going it was partially because I was the only one succeeding at weight loss. I was looking for people who had learned to walk their talk. The 12 steps helped me tremendously though. I would highly recommend it for finding others who understand that food can be an addiction. Good luck in your journey.

Thirty years ago I attended an OA meeting and, after the speaker finished, I said to myself..."I want what she has!" Rather than Fit for life,Fat for life was my daily vision. I found that peace that comes with the discipline of food control and my ability to be focused on 3 meals a day and nothing in between meals...then we moved and there were no meetings near my house...besides, I was obsessed with the meetings and let other parts of my life slip. After regaining the 87 lbs I lost, I was introduced to SP...then I was focused on my food and drew from my OA experience to, once again, climb back on the wagon...I invited my family to join SP... being free it was a good bargain, but it meant using self-discipline and good food choices every day...I am not sure where I de-railed... but I know that SP is the answer...I am ready to use my OA experience, once again, to get healthy and slender... what is 100 lbs among friends?

I attended a couple of the OA meetings close to home but that particular meeting didn't click for me. I then found out about telephone meetings, which I listened to for a few months until I joined the gym and starting going to small group training at the same time as the telephone meeting.

My sister has been with Food Addicts in Recovery for six or seven years now. She lost weight and has kept it off. That program is also based on the 12 step program and is more stringent than OA.

My husband was a part of that org. for many years! I spent time with the spouses learning their part (the 12-step, etc.) It was very educational and definitely gave both of us some tools for our weight struggles belt! Unfortunately, the groups folded, but the tools live on! It is a very worthwhile org. to take part in!

Hello CLORD5,
Yes, I am actually a member of OA and SparkPeople. At one time all I used was Sparkpeople and I lost weight -- but when I stopped entering my food and exercising everyday, the weight and compulsive eating habits gradually came right back. So did the weight. I too struggled with accepting the idea of being powerless over food and needing something outside of myself to remove the compulsion from me. Today I can honestly say that left to my own devices I can NOT remain on a healthy eating plan for the long haul. I've had many years of trying just that and also had bariatric surgery. Nothing worked for me for long because I never really addressed the abnormal my body and mind reacted to certain foods.
Today I am proud to say I am in OA and working the 12-steps to the best of my ability. I find understanding and support there -- my fellow OAers help me come out of my isolation and hiding and into the light. It's been a great experience thus far.
Hope you find what it is you are looking for, and take good care.
TerryC

Thank you so much for responding. It was nice to read that it isn't really for you, but you didn't berate me for thinking about it. Thank you so much!

I have in the past. I know that it has been a source of comfort and control for many, many people. I find 12 step to be too focused on admitting that you have no control and that it is only by the grace of your (insert focus of faith here) that you can be healed. I know that it can feel like there is no control to be found, save from an outside force. I have been fortunate in that I have found the control I lacked when I switched what I was eating. Now that I am a low carb vegetarian, I feel like I have found the magic key to me. It's what I've been searching for all my life and I am slowly losing the weight and I have control too. I hope you find your magic key. :) If that is at O.A., more power to you! It can be an effective way of life. We all have to find that way that works for us.

Hi from ND. I was just wondering if anyone has considered joining OA?
