If you love walking then start walking! I walk about 75 minutes a day and that in conjunction with diet has helped me lose 276 pounds in 10 weeks. No strength training and no sweating - just brick walks every single day. My cholesterol has come down from over 300 to 210 too. I am watching carbs not total calories.

I am right there with you. I try to change up what I do so I do a yoga dvd (great for Arthur....), floor exercises and stretching, stationary bike, treadmill, and weights. I am currently on the hunt for a nice easy dance dvd to add to the mix. Also, make sure you have nice padded tennis shoes - they can really make a difference with the back.

The local gym has an indoor pool and I take water exercise classes three times a week. It's "realistic exercise" in the sense that you need to exercise your entire musculoskeletal system ("a tight muscle is a weak muscle") but you don't need to take studio impact classes. In fact, water exercise allows you to stretch and exercise your *entire* body, not just a few muscle groups at a time.

As for body image, nobody's there to look at you any more you're there to look at them.

I need to lose 100 pounds and I get in the pool at least 3 times a week. You can't let fear of being seen in a swimsuit prevent you from swimming if that is what you like to do. Life needs to be lived now.

Not only do I go out in public in a swimsuit, I use the pool at work, which means my middle and high school-aged students see me in a swimsuit. Guess what? They are all super supportive and enthusiastic about it, and some of them have even come and done laps with me.

Have you looked at the suits at Land's End (catalogue or online)? They have a huge selection of sizes, colors, types etc. I am about 45 lbs overweight and had to buy one last year, as we were going on vacation at our friends' cabin on a lake. I found a style that completely masked my "tummy" and didn't make my thighs look too big.

If you enjoy swimming, then get to it and quit worrying about what you look like in a suit. I've been to Hawaii 2x and TRUST ME, there are tons of people who look WAY WORSE than you do!

I ride my bike, hike occassionally, do SP videos with resistant band and weights, I walk but I'd much rather ride. I'm a swimmer but I quit wanting to be seen in a swimsuit (weight and pale skin 👻) and I hate the pools at indoor gyms. I have many friends with pools (AZ) but the swimsuit hang up prevents me from partaking. If I lose 30 more pounds I pledge to get in a swimsuit. 👙 ⬅ Nothing like that 😃.

Thats a shame! The pool has been my go to form of exercise! I had knee replacement along with several other health problems that limited me! The pool has been great to help me get back my strength! Not back to 100% but getting there!! At times i have paid the 3 or 5$ fee to use the pool at local motels and hotels. Our local Aurora even lets people pay a monthly fee to use the therapy pool!! Do some checking around. Where there is a will there is a way!!

We can do most every one of the exercises those under 50 do. We might not do it at the same intensity they do, but we can choose to do them at the level we can do them, and gauge the results when done.
I spin cycle every day with amazing in shape youngsters and I make it through every one of those classes sweating just as hard as they are. As I ponder the thought of over 50 I cant think of many we cant do.

We might want to make sure we really want to, as if we were still in our twenties...but age is , in part, a lotta attitude. We can do whatever we want, but maybe just not as intense as we once did....( sounds like a Toby Keith song , huh)?

check your local gym for silver sneaker classes. Some health insurances and some part of medicare may pick up the cost. These classes are great for everything from balance to cardio. They even have it for pool exercise. You can even sit if you cannot stand and they will show the modification for a sitting person. Our classes are always full and fun.

I'm in the pool swimming laps at least 3 days a week. I do resistance bands a couple times a week and try to avail myself of all of the stairs on our hilly campus at work.

I had a broken femur earlier this year, which slowed me down and has made me much more cautious about stairs and uneven ground, but I plan on starting yoga again soon to regain my balance.

I do a dance class every Tuesday. I try to get more that 6500 stress evert day, I've bought myself an adult tricycle now and yesterday I had a 2 hour lesson on road safety. Greater Manchester have a scheme to help more people ride bikes. I really enjoyed this. Looking forward to getting out on my bike frequently

Realistic exercise for 79-year-olds. Weight training, riding a Me-Mover. We all need to weight train no matter what you believe. Our muscles deteriorate the older we get, one of the major reasons for nursing homes, people cannot take care of themselves, they lose the capacity, an important part is losing musculature. You don't have to do a 300 lb, bench press, but we all need to do some form of resistance training.
Aerobics, a wonderful requirement because it leads to endorphins, that feeling great chemical we all have if we want to have it flowing in our bodies, do we? Some do, other's not so much especially the over 50 crew. Some let their age dictate priorities, other's not so much. I went for a 13 + mile ride on a Me-Mover today, it's like a stepping machine that takes you places, similar to running, but with low impact. I burned lots of calories on my ride, lots of it climbing grades, made me feel great.
But that's me, what about you? Do not fear to do an HIIT workout, or throwing some weights around, just start slow, bur start, your body and you need it.

I'm 58 and can't do what I used to do either, but I keep on keeping on.

I think they key question here is, "What do YOU like/want to do?" Being consistent with exercise will work better for you if you're doing things you enjoy.

Once you decide on what you like or want to do, start small and work your way up, even if that means 5 minutes at a time.

I would recommend this question for both cardio and some type of strength training (whether it's yoga, dumbbells, machines, bands, whatever works). Cardio possibilities are endless.

Good luck!

He has others available on Amazon, but you can also order them through your local video/bookstore.

"Walk Away the Pounds" by Leslie Sansone are easy. They are sold at Walmart or on Amazon.

YouTube has all the clips for YOGA by Priscilla Patrick who is now 74 and still teaching. She had them as part of her PBS TV series,

I'd never done any kind of class aerobics and I started doing step aerobics. Oh my... I made it through the first hour class and the totally paid for it. I was sore for days but returned two nights later for a second class. Made it through that one too. Then hubby came home (he works overseas) for his break and I fell away.

Been really busy outside in the yard (we just had a circular drive, garage drive, and 12x15 concrete pad put in), so there's lots to clean up yet. I love being outdoors but it's just been so HOT here.

Our local pool is offering water aerobics and I think I might give those a try. Anyone know just how sore it's going to make me the first round? Lots of classes available and I'll do all of them I can to be in the water!

My husband is 68 and I am 67. We are just getting back into our exercise routine after a series of illnesses and injuries for both of us. We try to go to the gym at least 5 times a week. Two of those days we walk on the treadmill for 30 minutes and do about 30 minutes of strength training. The other days we walk for 60 minutes. We also try to be as active throughout the day as possible and add in extra steps by parking farther away, etc and try to get some stretching in every day. We are slowly working our way up to doing more, walking more and faster, lifting more weight, and maybe biking later on. .

I am 53 and try to walk daily for 60 minutes, I also go to the gym 3 times a week to ride the stationary bike at the lowest intensity but, the highest speed for 60 minutes, it has a 5 minute cool down timer on the bike. It gets my heart rate up to 125. My blood pressure was down today 88/65, Dr. says not enough salt because of exercise and need to drink lots of water. My normal blood pressure is 120/70 when I exercise a lot it goes down to 100 or lower which is dangerous so I watch my blood pressure daily at the drug or grocery store a block away..

Walking, working with a skilled trainer at your gym.... a good trainer will have adaptations for whatever level of fitness you are at. Strength training is important, but need not put us in traction! Anything like yoga for flexibility and balance.

First thing to do is ask your doctor! Mine has cleared me for everything. I certainly cannot do everything. It takes time to build up strength and stamina. Walking is a great way to start. I also like the videos here on Spark. Some may take me weeks to be able to do them at the same pace, but that's OK. Every time I do it, I see some improvement. There are also chair exercises. That's where I had to start. I also have to say I love workout clothing. I only have 2 outfits that I designated as such, but it puts my mind where it has to be. Eventually that will be a reward when I get through a video. Probably from WalMart, but I don't care. I love the way it makes me feel. Don't get discouraged if it seems difficult at first. It does get easier.

I'm 60 and I workout between 1.5 to 2 hours per day 7 days a week. The mistake I have made is in doing the same exercises every day.
Noon time at work gym:
20 minutes Elliptical
20 minutes Stationary Bike
20 minutes weights

Evenings, Home gym:
20 minutes Spin Bike
20 minutes Rowing machine
sometimes TRX Straps

Problem I have noticed my joints ache. So I looked into yoga. I can't do the basic moves because I am not as limber as the people in the book. I think I will do my regular workout at noon and concentrate on stretching and doing yoga and meditation in the evenings.

Do any of you have any feedback on this plan? Wondering if not working hard at night will start adding the pounds back on.
Thanks

You can do whatever you doctor clears you to do.. and what you like.

I am in my 60s and have 1 hour spinning classes three times a week.
DH is in his 60s... he prefers to swim 4 or 5 days a week.

We also do strength training.

Ok, let's face it...I cannot physically do many of the advertised workouts as I used to be able to do years ago! I'm in need of suggestions/directions of physical activity/exercise that I can do without the need of a hip replacement or traction.

I love walking...I've always loved free weights/bench workouts...any help would be dearly appreciated! Thanks! :)
