In 1893 Elizabeth "Libba" Cotten was born near Chapel Hill, NC. At 7 she learned to play her brothers banjo and at 9 she got a $3 guitar from Sears Roebuck. Being left-handed and self-taught, she played them both upside down and backward. Teachers now call that Cotten pickin'. At 11 she wrote "Freight Train," which has become a blues and folk standard. Around this time she wrote or adapted "Shake Sugaree." Some will disagree, but I'm telling you for true that this song is about an unsuccessful craps shooter.
Anyhow, at about 15 or so she got married and some deacons in her new husband's church insisted she give up "worldly music."

Fifty years later she went to work as a maid near Washington DC. Being a prominent musical family, the lady of the house kept one of her guitars hanging on the kitchen wall. When she had time, Libba took it down and, shutting herself in the drawing-room, played those songs she learned so many years ago. Turns out Mike and Peggy Seeger, who both became prominent musicians in their own right, were the two children in the house. They first discovered Libba's secret talent. Mike recorded her on reel-to-reel tape which ended up being released in 1966 by Folkways Records as Folksongs and Instrumentals with Guitar.

In her 70s and 80s, Elizabeth Cotten performed and recorded, receiving numerous awards and accolades. Her songs have been covered by everybody from Pat Boone to Bob Dylan.

This version of "Shake Sugaree" features Elizabeth Cotten on guitar and her 12-year-old granddaughter, Brenda Evans on vocals.

Saw we are on "S" and wanted to play "Shake Sugaree" by Elizabeth Cotten. But R.E.M.'s "Everbody Hurts" teeters on the line betwixt mournful and plum pitiful so maybe "Sweeter For Me" from Joan Baez' 1976 Gulf Winds album is more in keeping with the tone. I'll save Liba's story for when I can include links and try to tell it properly.

"Leaving Home" by Charlie Poole. Recorded September 18, 1926.

Charlie Poole and The North Carolina Ramblers were contemporaries of Gid Tanner and the Skillet Lickers. Truth be told I like them a little better but the latter makes a catchier screen name. Charlie Poole is one of those ridiculously talented musicians from every generation destined to spectacular careers cut tragically short. If you have a passing familiarity with Country Music you will recognize "Leaving Home" from countless similar recordings often titled "Frankie and Johnnie."

Turns out my YouTube links problem is the site doesn't allow posted links during the first week of membership. You can find the recording on YouTube by entering [Charlie Poole With The North Carolina Ramblers-Leaving Home] in the search box.

The next song title begins with E.

Thanks Nightglow. I'm sure I've heard "Take You Back" but didn't remember it.

Ending with K ... "King of the Road" by Roger Miller, 1964 leaps immediately to mind. Remember listening to this on the school bus with an earphone on the transistor radio.

If I knew how to post a YouTube link, it would be Miller's posthumous Hall of Fame induction ceremony with Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, Marty Stuart Dwight Yoakam, and Dolly Parton all live joining Roger on tape. You might find it if you type [Roger Miller 1995 Country Music Hall of Fame] into a YouTube search box.If you're listening to the one that's 13 minutes and 13 seconds long the part with "King of the Road" begins at about 9:44.

Already an old song when The Carter Family recorded it in 1936.

Paste text above into YouTube a search box to listen to an early recording of this old standard by the SkilletLickers with Riley Puckett on lead guitar and vocals.
For a more modern take, I recommend Jerry Reed's version.
