Oh yes! I am finally listening. If you can't trust the doctor to tell you the truth about your health, then why pay him to do so.

Yes and frequently (you'd think I'd get my head out of my a.. and listen). He explicitly said he did not want me to go on a diet but rather adapt and adhere to a life style change. He's also not a fan of the BMI standard set by the government, his main focus is to get me at a healthy weight I can maintain.

Who would like to feel offended nobody even i , the same. But if you are overweight obese i think is good to have someone speak the truth. Most of the people i am around they don't want to hurt me and i can never like change because i can't figure where i am doing mistakes.

When I was 9 the doctor put me on a strict diet. Made a huge fuss. Said some very rude things. I wasn't that over weight either.

As an adult, and being morbidly obese it can come up. But they are way more polite. They acknowledge the difficulty.

Then again, I'd fire a pediatrician if they talked to my child the way mine talked to my brother and I.

Sometimes they frame it in a question. To see if it's something I want to talk about.

A few have - mostly in not very helpful ways, and mostly a long time ago. More recently, I've found more doctors are sensitive to the fact that weight is only part of the picture and for many people can keep them from seeing the doctor to deal with other problems (because they fear another lecture about their weight -- as if they had forgotten they were fat!)

Having previously been pretty significantly overweight, it is easy for me to gain weight back if I'm not careful, so it is something that I raise with my doctors now, to let them know I am trying to manage my now lower weight. It was difficult during my fertility treatments to do so, particularly because I was too old to take much of a break in between treatments to lose the weight I gained due to the treatments (between 2013 and this past May when my second son was born, I had 6 IVF cycles total, 4 miscarriages, and two frozen embryo transfers that resulted in two healthy pregnancies and two healthy little boys). So I started my successful pregnancies at a higher weight than I wanted to be at - but my OB was very unconcerned about that, or about my (to me) high weight gain during pregnancy (about 45 pounds each time, although I lost a lot in between the two pregnancies). We talked a bit about how to keep the gains down, but he said my gains were appropriate and honestly the only lectures I got were the prenatal visits where I DIDN'T gain weight. (Note that I didn't have gestational diabetes or high blood pressure -- which might have caused him to be more concerned about weight/diet.) He didn't lecture me at my 6-week postpartum visit either (where I'd only lost minimal weight since the birth) - though he was encouraging of my plan to go re-start my diet and work with my weight maintenance doctor again.

I'd say he gave the right amount of attention to the issue -- his focus was where it should be - on getting me and my babies through my pregnancies safely.

I contrast that to an OB/GYN I had about 20 years ago who lit into me about my weight very unkindly, and when I returned the next year for a checkup (god knows why, other than that he was located next to my office and took my insurance), having lost a significant amount of weight since the previous visit, he just commented "did you finally stop eating?" Jerk. I really should have told him off, but I was much less good at standing up for myself then....

Starting Weight: 268 lbs. (November 2010)
Quasi-Maintenance: 165 lbs. (June 2011)
Goal Weight: 150 lbs. (reached December 8, 2011)

Size 22W to Size 4

Currently maintaining within 5 lbs. (+ or -) of goal. I weigh daily, but also use a tape measure and the fit of my clothes to guage how well I'm doing.

Deep down you know exactly what you’re capable of. There’s even moments where you get a glimpse of all the potential you have. You can get there. You must be willing to sacrifice the habits, the things, the situations that are standing in the way of your success. Never Stop!

My doc isn't concerned with my weight at this point, but she recognized it was stressing me a little bit, so she told me to lose 5 pounds.

No, I think that as I am somewhat intelligent any doctor I have had realized that I must know that weighing in the 200s is not good for someone 5ft,5inches. But doctors have commented when I had lost weight. The fact that my weight had gone down opened a dialogue about why. One time my weight loss was because I was in the early stages of cancer.

On my way to my new normal.

Yes, my Internist noticed I was losing weight, encouraged me to lose more, offered classes on nutrition through my health plan. I went for one month as my husband is pre-diabetic, so went with him and learned alot from the handouts, but learn more here.
Next appt with RA Dr 9/8, 3 months from my last weigh in with their digital scale. I am down 14 lbs and hope to be down 20 before next weigh in. Have a long ways to go, but being realistic about it. emoticon

Everyone saying no, kind of surprises me. I've moved around since I was 18 and I can't remember going to a doctor that didn't say I should try to lose a few pounds (and I don't have any health problems except Vitamin D deficient.) I dreaded going to the doctors because of it. One doctor even told me, 'you carry your weight well, I never thought you weighed this much by looking at you.' Thanks, what a compliment. Lol.
I appreciate doctors who are upfront about it and give suggestions whether it was 10-20lbs when I was in college or 50-60lbs.

Indirectly. Mostly the medical profession comments on my abdominal fat. One Nurse Practitioner told me to eat chicken, fish and vegetables and forget the rest. Right away I had a vision of a chocolate bar. Tell me not to have something and for sure I'll crave it.

On the other hand, the vetenarian tells me my dog has to lose weight and then gives me the sly eye.

Not in a LONG time. I did have a doctor when I was a senior in high school tell me that if I gained the "Freshman 15" that I would be obese. Which makes no sense cause at the time I was at a healthy weight for my height and age. Men and their stupid men charts. That did offend me, but since then when I actually needed to, no doctor has said a word. What is funny though, when I was pregnant with my son 8 years ago, I had a doctor who kept telling me to gain weight. See I use to walk everywhere. I had to since I did not drive and my fiance was working at the time. Well when I went on bed rest, I did gain a lot of weight. Now I am happy to say that I am just about to where I was in high school, only 100 times healthier.

I went to a specialist for a hiatal hernia, and the only thing he talked to me about was a gastric bypass surgery. While I know I am morbidly obese, I do not think gastric bypass was the right decision for me. When I went to my family doctor to discuss this, he didn't want me to have any procedure for the hiatal hernia but he did suggest the gastric bypass. His reasoning was that most hiatal hernia surgeries don't work in the long run and it changes the digestive system. What does a gastric bypass do but change the digestive system. Since joining Spark People, I am learning to make better food choices, moving more, losing weight and feeling much better.

And yes, I know that gastric bypass is one procedure for severe reflux esophagitis, which I didn't have and that it is a great procedure for many people, just not me.

Always work enthusiastically for the Lord, for you know that nothing you do for the Lord is ever useless.

As a healthcare provider, this is a very tricky subject to approach and lots of doctor's simply don't want to take it on.
From the patient POV: Yes, the patient generally knows they are overweight already and that overweight isn't healthy. I say generally because a lot of people are in denial about their weight for a long time. The issue is a lot of people want to take a passive, back seat role to their own health and so that while they might know they are overweight, they don't always want to take responsibility for it having become a problem through unhealthy life choices (I'm not speaking about people with medical issues and medication induced weight gain) and they don't want to take an active role in changing their diet and fitness which, as we all know, can be a lot of work.
From the Dr POV: It's hard to bring up such a sensitive topic without offending a person. Can you really think of a nice way for your dr (or anyone) to basically say "You're fat, you're unhealthy, you need to lose weight because you are destroying your own health"? Even when you phrase it nicely and explain the health concerns and the benefits of weight loss, it's a very touchy subject. Plus, in the US at least, being the healthcare provider who broaches the subject also makes you responsible for dealing with it. If I discuss a patient's weight and that they need to lose weight, I would be responsible for discussing nutrition, following up, etc.
I saw 1 person said they wished their cardiologist did more than just send them to a nutritionist, but a cardiologist doesn't specialize in weight loss. They are specialists and their fees are high and your money is generally better spent discussing nutrition and weight loss with somebody who deals with that. Billing in the US is a nightmare (part of the reason I work overseas) and a consultation can be billed differently for different time increments. So if the dr spends 7 min vs 20 min on a consultation, your bill would be different.

My doctor did. However, it was at a time when I believed I was stuck being fat forever. He was surprised when I lost 80 pounds.

Yes, I didn't care much for it even though I knew that already. Gosh all I had to do was look into a mirror to see myself.

I'm also getting shorter due to severe osteoporosis. My doctor wants me to lose weight that I gained due to steroids. That also caused my osteoporosis. I'm working on it. Slowly but surely. At times I need to go back on the steroids and I gain weight if I even think about food. It's an uphill battle.

Until I lost 3 inches in height due to disk degeneration and osteoporosis. Today I am 5'4" tall. I've weighed the same since college (50 years ago) but at 5'7" with an athletic build I was trim. Today I'm a bit tubby.

I also have multiple medical issues: I'm deaf (at 61-now 67); have peripheral non-diabetic neurapathies in my hands and feet; have Sjorgen's syndrome; have drop foot-left side only; experience Raynaud's syndrome and have other undiagnosed or idopathic autoimmune disorders. Working to stay ahead of them is almost a full time job.

PS - does anyone really feel a doctor is being insensitive to tell you you need to lose weight when it should be obvious and you should be the one bringing up the discussion. I cannot cure anything I have but it will be easier for me to manage now if I can succeed in getting rid of 30# - the 10 I gained in my X-C move last year; the 10 I always wanted to lose to be "skinny" (now it wouldn't be skinny) and the #10 that would make it easier for other peoplel to literally pick me up when I fall.

with recent health issues the need to loose weight is becoming very important. But, I also have little success - maybe due to the insulin resistance?

Emotion may help us get started in the right direction, but it is rarely there at the finish line. Sooner or later we must press forward without the support of emotion and employ discipline.

Only my cardiologist who I see for a yearly evaluation tell me to lose weight. My main doctor, my rheumatologist has never said a word and I think he should. There is no reason a doctor needs to be concerned about hurting a patient's feelings by telling them they need to lose weight. They need to be diplomatic and express it in a clinical way, that's all. I am at risk for heart disease because of rheumatoid arthritis. Being overweight or obese is just another risk I don't need. Encouraging me to lose weight and explaining how to lose weight from a doctor would be very helpful. Sure wish my cardiologist would do more than refer me to a nutritionist. There is so much more he could do for me. My other doctors should do the same.

Thanks

Yes, because I has high cholesterol and was developing a fatty liver. I was only about 25 pounds overweight, but it was enough to cause me some serious health problems.

I have never been told to lose weight, however I've never been that heavy and I'm pretty healthy otherwise. However, I don't see why people would be offended by being told they need to lose weight. Obesity is now classified as a disease and even for people who are not in the obese class, but may be moving in that direction, I think it should be expected for a doctor to speak up about it. I would surely want any doctor that has any concern about anything with my health to say something to me about it.
