Your body needs high-quality fats: butter, ghee, coconut oil, olive oil, avocado oil is a neutral-tasting oil, cacao butter. I hear lard rendered from pastured pigs is amazing for pie crust though I've never used it. I also use a little toasted sesame oil every once in a great while.

My sister is vegan and uses Earth Balance.

I stay away from soy, vegetable, canola, safflower, peanut, and other such oils. Nothing hydrogenated.

I make my own soft margarine and shortening. I mix equal parts butter and oil, such as Crisco soybean oil in a blender and chill in the fridge. For baking, I prefer unsalted butter and oil blend in place of shortening. Salted butter and oil work better for a spread. I find I use less with the blends.

I agree. Butter does provide great flavor. The trick is using it in small amounts

My Dr. wants me to use butter. Also I think I use less as it tastes better in smaller amounts.

Definitely butter! If you are going for mono fats - use olive oil.

I use Smart Balance. I think it would be good for Apple Crisp too.

Personally, I'd use unsalted butter in place of the margarine.

I saw the Lightened-Up Apple Crisp recipe, but it calls for margarine, which I don't use. What would be a good substitute? Thanks!
