Hi SHIRAZ18 - Welcome to SparkPeople. You have come to a really great place for help.

First I will suggest that if you aren't already, please get some help with your depression and self-esteem. Talk to your Dr and ask for a referral to a Therapist who specializes in the areas you are concerned with. If you aren't on meds, that might also be an option.

Have you ever been checked for things like PCOS or hypothyroidism? If not, it would be wise to ask for bloods to check them out, as well as other medical conditions which can contribute to your weight and how you are feeling.

If you have a lot of weight to lose, you might find that aiming for that loss to occur in one year might be a little too quick. The slow losses are far better for your body and overall health, and also much more likely to stay off.

Don't compare your weight-loss with that of your family members, or anyone else. That is also a good way to set you up with failure or even add to your depression.

Weigh all of your food for accuracy and enter it all into the Nutrition Tracker. Keto might work for you, and you may be happy with it, but a lot of people it doesn't work for. A lot of us NEED to eat in the middle-range of carbs. "Dieting" itself is not advised, and a lot of people who embark on them inevitably fail. Often it is because of the restrictions, but also because they don't really learn much on the way. They get to their goal and then go back to how they were eating before. The healthy lifestyle is done gradually and you learn so much more on the way, and that is what sticks with you for life.

I strongly suggest that you use baby steps .... change things gradually. Try things like reducing cake/ice-cream with a piece of fruit or reducing soda/juice with water, and allowing your mind/body to get used to those changes before adding something else to the mix. Don't drop your calories suddenly. That could set you up for problems with disturbed and poor quality of sleep, light-headedness, severe hunger pain (as opposed to pain) and a number of other problems.

The same applies to exercise. If you aren't accustomed to it, start off slowly and gradually add to the duration and intensity. Given that you are quite overweight, I would also be inclined to ask your Dr for advice - some people are advised to just do basic light exercises for a number of reasons. I am one re skeletal issues and fatigue as a result of a head injury.

I lost 50lb in the first 16 months and then happily sat there for a year enjoying my new clothes (couldn't afford to keep replacing them, (even from cheap 2nd hand shops.) I reached my goal a few years ago, but I still weigh all of my food and enter it into the Nutrition Tracker to ensure that I stay there.

Finally, please do NOT equate beauty with being thinner. Beauty and self-esteem shines through the personality of the person and accepting themselves. There are many very large people out there who are absolutely stunning.

I am not sure what your year out goal is, but consider putting your year out goals on the back burner and start focusing on the first ten or twenty pounds. Once you have taken out those first few pounds, you can use those to adjust your timeline for larger goals. For example, if it takes you three months to lose 15 lbs, the next 15 might come off in four months. And the 15 after that might take five months. Set small goals to help you build up some success and keep you going. You can have larger goals that are farther out, but the issue with larger goals is that it's kind of hard to see progress. "I hit my ten pound goal!" feels a little better than "1/52 of the way there!"

Also, make sure you record some not weight measurements. Waist size, arm size and so forth can help you see where you are losing inches. Walking a set course, be it a block or a kilometer or a mile, can give you an interesting point of reference to look back on where you started. I have a fitness test I found in a women's magazine, and it is illuminating to look back and see where I started. You won't see changes day to day, but spot checking every month or few months, then years beyond, can show a great deal of progress.

Welcome to Spark People !

I give all new members one piece of advice and it's this,"don't look at good health or weight loss with an all or nothing mentality". if the only healthy thing you did for yourself today was drink 8 glasses of water, that's still a step in the right direction.
Remember, you're trying to change habits learned over a life time. that's not going to happen overnight, a week, a month or even a year.

Change takes time. that's why spark encourages all its members to start with some simple changes first. Don't try to do everything at once or you will end up frustrated. Just start with some simple goals.

Example, if you're not eating 6-9 servings of fresh fruit and veggies, set a goal to eat 2-3 servings each day for one week. if you're not drinking 8 glasses of water, set a goal to drink 2-4 glasses each day for one week. if you haven't been exercising, don't start with an hour a day. set a goal to take a 30 minute walk each day for one week. Once you've achieved these goals, you do them again or you make new goals.

Setting simple goals is how you slowly ease into healthier habits.

Rome wasn't built in a day and neither were you.

emoticon I'm at my wit's end. I am 26 and extremely overweight. I have tried so many weight loss programs and have failed since I was about 18. I'm tired of being unhealthy and overweight. My sister and mother recently changed to a healthy lifestyle and have lost so much weight. They look great and I'm happy for them.. but I can't help but wallow in self pity about myself. I have extreme depression due to not having any self confidence. It's so bad I don't like for people to look at me. I am in search of a support group to motivate me to reach my goal within this next year as I start keto and walking. I just want to be healthy and feel beautiful. I've wasted so many years already... I'm tired of it. Thank you all so much.
