Obiesmom,

I have seen those. Also Bluegrass Underground, in the cave.
But mainly I see whomever is coming through here.

oh, and Magaritaville is my LEAST favorite JB tune. The live versions are tolerable, but I'm reaching to change the station if it's the studio version.

He has so many really GREAT, deep songs. Kind of a shame that's the one getting all the attention.

@TRUEPEACENIK - have you ever watched Live From Daryl's House? Daryl Hall with various musical guests. They jam together & share a meal.

I've not seen a bad episode, even when his guest was someone I wasn't too crazy about.

You can find past episodes on YouTube. They are filming new episodes, but it looks like the new ones are webcast for now.

Obiesmom,

I’m a DeadHead, but appreciate good story in song. Buffett applies.
My sweetie, a well-seasoned musician playing covers and originals, once asked why a particular day was so hard on me.

I’d had six clients, all wanting a simple relaxation massage. I was hired for my medical massage skills. I love the puzzle. It feeds my soul. All six were 90 min sessions.
I replied, it’s like playing Magaritaville for nine hours straight.
His “oh, gawd” nearly blew the speakers in my car.

Now if a day has been frazzling, we both say, “I stepped on a poptop.”

There are lines....lines in the sand no wave can erase.

He does play a small selection of Buffett tunes. Pirate Looks at 40, He Went to Paris, among others.

@TRUEPEACENIK - THANKS! That sounds great. I'll have to check it out.

I am a late-to-the-game Parrothead. My love of Jimmy Buffett started with Knee Deep. Once it took hold I was driving my boss crazy because there were times when I would go for MONTHS listening to JB at work. I prefer his live recordings over studio, so I bought many of the concert CDs.

edited to add - True Peace read my mind - I was thinking about all the stories of Girl Scouts making a killing in sales around recreational pot!

The same stipulation is in Colorado’s recreational laws.

But, weed smoking is now relegated to smoking areas, a delight as it was fogging up rooms for years after a no tobacco indoors law was passed. Couldn’t toss the pot smokers, because pot wasn’t specifically listed in the law.
Smoke is smoke.
Want to fly at a show? Get edibles.

As for your fest, a new money-making opportunity, perhaps?
On Colfax, VooDoo Doughnuts is next to a dispensary.
Even our Girl Scouts are marketing savvy enough to set up outside dispensaries.
You can’t smoke in them, but years of conditioning leads to great Thin Mints sales.

OBIESMOM2,

It is legal in MA to smoke marijuana in the privacy of your own home. Some smokers have interpreted the new law to mean they can smoke a joint on the street whenever they want and not be busted. That's an argument for a different thread.

Talking about brownies... munchies.. brownies... munchies.

A few months ago, there was a weed fest in Boston that I happened to walk past.
Wondered what the heck was going on with all the tents. Along with all the weed paraphernalia, there was a huge stand selling munchies like french fries, burgers, hot dogs and fried dough.

Why did this interest me ? the fried dough cost $9 !!!

That food stand must have made a bundle off all those hungry weed smokers.

LOLLLLLLLLL

who pays $9 for fried dough (funnel cake) ?

For the Snoop Dogg folks, Hulu has an exclusive movie, Beach Bum.
Snoop and Jimmy Buffet both perform.

It’s a cute lark of a film.

@ARCHIMEDESII - Girl...I OWN that movie. Bought the DVD years ago, and watch it often! One of my favorites. I have the soundtrack, too. So much good music.

Before MP3 players were a thing, I bought lots of movie soundtrack CDs because of the variety of songs on one CD.
10 Things I Hate About You, Beautiful Girls, Bridgette Jones's Diary, Wonder Boys, Oh Brother Where Art Thou...just the ones that come to mind.

Grosse Pointe Blank has a great soundtrack, but it seems I never could find that one at a decent price (I usually buy used CDs).

All of Amy Herckerling's movies have great songs, but they usually don't release a soundtrack.

If you get a chance, rent or stream this movie, Swingers with Vince Vaughn. Has an awesome neo swing sound track.

As far as the Las Vegas lounge sound, you'd think I'd love Frank Sinatra. But I actually prefer Dean Martin. Great as Frank was, I thought Dean had the better voice.

Oh, Martha Stewart must have thought that Snoop had the best recipe for brownies. LOLLLLLLLL

@ARCHIMEDESII - I have CDs from all three of those. I LOVED the swing music revival.

Actually, I also have a Glenn Miller CD in my collection.

Knowing Snoop, he'd probably be up for some joint projects with Richard Cheese

OBIE,

I wonder what Snoop Dog thought of Gin and Juice. That was fantastic !

Richard Cheese has a great voice. You know who he reminded me of ? Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, part of the neo swing movement along with the Squirrel Nut Zippers and the Cherry Poppin Daddies, speaking of innuendo.

If you like lounge music, you might enjoy some neo swing, start with Big Bad Voodoo Daddy.

My favorite is their version of Gin & Juice (still explicit...but a lounge singer type version). Cracks me up every time.

Reminds of Bill Murray on SNL back in the day.

I'm a lyrics person. Always have been.

Some meanings completely went over my head for YEARS (almost every song by Z Z Top...WHOA!)

My current music obsession is Lizzo. I love her, but she doesn't hold back at all on the swearing. She has an AMAZING voice, a great talent for writing, and hearing her play the flute...WOW.

There are also times that I only know the radio version, and when I listen to the song online it's not what I expected! (Cake by the Ocean, for example. Or many of P!nk's songs. I didn't know she'd been edited for radio until I bought one of her CDs)

In the US, you can usually find 'clean' versions of an artist's music. I've bought several CDs like that.

Now when my neighbor across the street is playing L O U D very V I L E music (so loud that I can hear it in my house, wearing noise cancelling headphones)...ugh. That's another story. He's done a tiny bit better recently. He still seems absolutely clueless about leaving for work at 3 or 4 AM with his radio blaring.

Another song I like is "Honey, I'm Good" by Andy Grammer. It's about a man turning down an opportunity to cheat but doesn't. Having been cheated on twice, I admit I love this song.

Depends on the music.

I turn OFF most of today's top-40 pop because I find it tuneless, mindless, and inane. I DO listen to they lyrics or classic rock from the '70s. (I also listen to '80s "hair" bands while working out -- but that's more for the driving beat and screaming guitar riffs, not lyrics.)

I also listen to some foreign language pop (e.g Gipsy Kings, 883, Riccardo Cocciante) and because I don't speak those languages, I'm more into the emotional content of the music itself.

The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

I don't really mind innuendo. If I can ignore the innuendo and think it's about something else.

One of my favorite artists is Josh Groban. A few of his songs are in other languages. So for all I know. They could be about splitting the sheets?

I also like Michael Buble who did a cover of Me and Mrs Jones. Which I am sure is about an affair

MLAN,

I remember reading something similar about Pat Boone. For lack of a better term, you can't get more vanilla than him. Well, in 1997 he released an album of hard rock/metal song covers called In a Metal Mood.

The Christian community was outraged. Why would Pat Boone sing Metal ? Because he said they were good songs. Even Johnny Cash in his later years did a cover of Hurt by Nine Inch Nails. It's one of his best songs.

Oh and for those who are interested, Debbie Boone has a cameo in the new
"NKOTB" video called Boys in the Band. She looks great.

I do get a good chuckle from the "Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy" song. I guess I don't mind a little innuendo as a long as it's done with a touch of humor and/or is tasteful. Once it moves into nasty or violent, I am out.

I am also reminded of an Amy Grant video from the late 80s or early 90s. She is a Christian singer who has had some success in the secular market. If memory serves, the song is "Baby Baby" which she actually wrote after the birth of her 1st daughter. The video, however, had her make it into a love song where she starred in the video with a man who wasn't her husband. People were "outraged" because she was acting in love with someone other than her husband.

Please note the use of the word "acting". Yes, Christians can act in secular things and star alongside people to whom they aren't related. It's this type of "outrage" that makes people look like idiots.

As inneundo goes, Chuck Berry slipped this one by the censors. LOL

When I was a little biddy boy,
My grandmother bought me a cute little toy.
Silver bells hangin' on a string,
She told me it was my ding-a-ling-a-ling!
Oh, my ding-a-ling, my ding-a-ling,
I want you to play with my ding-a-ling!
My ding-a-ling, my ding-a-ling,
I want you to play with my ding-a-ling!
Then momma took me to Sunday school,
They tried to teach me the golden rule.
Ev'rytime the choir would sing,
I'd take out my ding-a-ling-a-ling!
Oh, my ding-a-ling...
And then momma took me to Grammar school,
But I stopped off in the vestibule.
Ev'ry time that bell would ring,
Catch me playin' with my ding-a-ling-a-ling!
Oh, my ding-a-ling...
Once I was climbin' the garden wall,
I slipped and had a terrible fall.
I fell so hard I heard bells ring,

That’s my state’s second state song.
And I may, or may not, have been around a campfire seeing fire in the sky.
But I’m a DeadHead.

There are genres with less innuendo. Murder ballads, but many have an affair involved.

My sweetie sings Long Black Veil, not a murder ballad, where our antihero tells of being accused of a crime, and hanged for it, but he’s innocent of the crime. He was however in the arms of his best friend’s wife, and he would not say so to protect her reputation.
She grieves for him the rest of her life, in a long black veil.

I’m also fond of High Horse (Nitty Gritty Dirt Band- I’m into a range of styles), which is all about saddling up...in the sheets.

TRUEPEACENIK,

Agreed. country songs are loaded with sexual innuendo too. A favorite pop cross over song was Big & Rich's "Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy". I LOVE that song.

And if songs aren't talking about sex, they may be talking about drug use. Anyone for Rocky Mountain High by John Denver ?

So, every song ever written is of sexual nature? Hardly and at the risk of sounding harsh, the OP's naivete is showing.

An example of a song without sexual references is "Pumped Up Kicks". It's a song about shooting violence. How about "American Pie"? It references the plane crash that killed Buddy Holly, the Big Bopper, and Ritchie Valens.

"Some even have in your face sexual titles like Touch my Body from Mariah Carey! Honestly, don't they have other ideas?!"

Oddly enough, I think Mariah Carey's family Christmas cards are sexier than some of her song lyrics. LOL

Afternoon Delight was a huge hit during the 70s. Skyrockets in flight !

Gonna find my baby, gonna hold her tight
Gonna grab some afternoon delight
My motto's always been 'when it's right, it's right'
Why wait until the middle of a cold dark night?
When everything's a little clearer in the light of day
And we know the night is always gonna be there any way
Thinkin' of you's workin' up my appetite
Looking forward to a little afternoon delight
Rubbin' sticks and stones together makes the sparks ingite
And the thought of lovin' you is getting so exciting
Sky rockets in flight
Afternoon delight
Afternoon delight
Afternoon delight

A buddy of mine recorded a song “Hot Jacuzzi Squirmer.” It is decidedly NOT even PG rated.
It is, however, hilarious.
His band, well known, refused to record it.

For those thinking country is clean, I’m laughing. It’s all truck and “something that rhymes with it” music.

TRUEPEACENIK,

OMG, Walk Up Little Suzie is a great example of a racy song from the 50s.

Out of curiosity, I googled a list of the 50 sexiest songs of all time. And two stood out not because they were blatantly sexual. But because of the artists who were singing the songs were considered such "goody two shoes" at the time. LOL

Let's Get Physical - Olivia Newton John
Do That Too Me One More Time - Captain and Tennille

Sexiest lyric: "I took you to an intimate restaurant, then to a suggestive movie/ There's nothing left to talk about unless it's horizontally"

I was a little surprized Let's Get Physical topped Madonna's Like a Virgin. but that was just one list on Billboard.

ARCHIMEDESII, I’m just a nerd for this sort of thing.

Pop music is basically rooted in rock n roll, a preexisting slang for boinking.
Of course the songs will reference sexual activity. In the 50s, it was a scandal for a woman to partake without a marriage.
Not the boys, buuuuuuuttttttt...

Check out Wake Up Little Suzy, a rare we didn’t but they will think we did song.
Guess what part got the song banned from the radio?
Oohlala.

EOWYN,

I'd say this song is pretty tame. It's not like he's dropping the f-bomb every other sentence. Which part offends you ?

Bruno Mars Lyrics

Hey, hey, hey
I got a condo in Manhattan
Baby girl, what's hatnin'?
You and your a$$ invited
So gon' and get to clappin'
Go pop it for a player
Pop, pop it for me
Turn around and drop it for a player
Drop, drop it for me
I'll rent a beach house in Miami
Wake up with no jammies (Nope)
Lobster tail for dinner
Julio serve that scampi (Julio!)
You got it if you want it
Got, got it if you want it
Said you got it if you want it
Take my wallet if you want it now

Jump in the Cadillac, girl, let's put some miles on it
Anything you want, just to put a smile on it
You deserve it baby, you deserve it all
And I'm gonna give it to you

Gold jewelry shining so bright
Strawberry champagne on ice
Lucky for you, that's what I like, that's what I like
Lucky for you, that's what I like, that's what I like
Sex by the fire at night
Silk sheets and diamonds all white
Lucky for you, that's what I like, that's what I like
Lucky for you, that's what I like, that's what I like

I'm talkin' trips to Puerto Rico
Say the word and we go
You can be my freaka
Girl, I'll be a fleeko, mamacita
I will never make a promise that I can't keep
I promise that your smile ain't gon' never leave
Shopping sprees in Paris
Everything 24 karats
Take a look in that mirror
Now tell me who's the fairest
Is it you? (is it you?) Is it me? (is it me?)
Say it's us (say it's us) and I'll agree, baby

Jump in the Cadillac, girl, let's put some miles on it
Anything you want, just to put a smile on it
You deserve it baby, you deserve it all
And I'm gonna give it to you

Gold jewelry shining so bright
Strawberry champagne on ice
Lucky for you, that's what I like, that's what I like
Lucky for you, that's what I like, that's what I like
Sex by the fire at night
Silk sheets and diamonds all white
Lucky for you, that's what I like, that's what I like
Lucky for you, that's what I like, that's what I like

[Bridge]
If you say you want a good time
Well here I am baby, here I am baby
Talk to me, talk to me, talk to me
Tell me what's on your mind (what's on your mind)
If you want it, girl come and get it
All this is here for you
Tell me, baby, tell me, tell me, baby
What you tryna do

Gold jewelry shining so bright
Strawberry champagne on ice
Lucky for you, that's what I like, that's what I like
Lucky for you, that's what I like, that's what I like
Sex by the fire at night (Sex by the fire at night)

TRUEPEACENIK,

That's right. You've got a better memory than me. Looks like I'm going to have to dig out my Meatloaf album now. LOL

It seems to me some song writers do use innuendo for the shock value. But then what's shocking to one person is tame to someone else for various reason. Take Elvis. He's considered tame by today's standards, but in the 1950s, his singing and hip swinging had parents talking about the moral decay of American society.

ARCHIMEDESII,
Paradise was about a really bad marriage as a result of that first time.

I do pay attention to lyrics. I’m a fan of many singer songwriters, and have contributed lyrics to musician friends.
Lyrics need to mean something, or be very funny.

If you find the music machine is churning out too much obvious innuendo, start looking at smaller genres.

I’d recommend Ellis Paul, Dan Navarro, Susan Warner, Emily Kaitz, Nina Gerber (usually has lyrics only with guests), Caravan of Thieves, Darryl Purpose, Don Conoscenti, Cheryl Wheeler...

Many songs? Still almost a sweeping generalization. There are SOME for sure through the years and in many genres. Yes, that Bruno Mars' song is a describing a one night stand and Bruno Mars has a couple of such songs but hardly most.

I do pay attention to the songs I like and find nothing questionable or eyebrow raising about most songs. Therefore, Elaine, stating "Most hit songs have not very clean lyrics" is almost a sweeping generalization. Sure, some songs from almost every genre have some questionable lyrics but not most.

And it isn't just a 21st century issue either. I can think of 3 examples off the top of my head from last century. Two are from the 80s and one is from the early 90s. Prince's "Darling Nikki" on the Purple Rain soundtrack is extremely suggestive. It's actually the song that created the legislation in the USA for the explicit warnings stickers on albums. Prince did have some racier stuff in his early days. George Michael performed "I Want Your Sex" in the 80s as well. That needs no explanation, gb Leighton, a Minnesota band, wrote "Shag" in the early 90s. Shag is British slang for sex.

These three examples of suggestive songs are exceptions for these 3 artists. Naughtier songs are not the rule. Prince's music library is extensive. George Michael's is fairly big as well. And gb Leighton is one of the bigger Minnesota artists and is still creating music. Obviously, the former 2 artists I mentioned are no longer with us. But to insinuate that most of their music libraries have trashy lyrics is ridiculous.

I'd say, the Doors classic,"Light My Fire" might have lyrics someone would find
suggestive.

What song lyrics did you find suggestive or offensive ? What song bothered you ?

or do you just enjoy the beat and ignore the lyrics?

Most hit songs today have not very clean lyrics. A lot of sexual innuendo in them. So do you abstain from pop music just because of the offensive lyrics or do you close one ear just because the beat sounds good?
