NITEMAN3D,

I agree with MLAN. cut the cable unless you use cable for internet access.

I just use over the air antenna to watch the local stations. I have Amazon Prime for
streaming. I also use my library card to stream movies or TV shows.

Do you have a library card ? If so, check to see what they offer for online services. I can listen to music, read magazines, stream movies/TV, take online courses through LYNDA.

it's great ! Get a library card !

After 30 years without programming, I’m using streaming services on my iPad mini.
I’ve a friend with a phone almost as big as my screen!
I watch some YouTube in the morning, as I wake hours before I need to be at work, but it’s peak gym time, so...nope, and I’m an empty nester. Occasionally I use video to wind down at night.
I get Hulu free now, with my Spotify music, which is a work expense.
Prime has a video component, and Prime is also a business expense. Music and massage product.

No gaming, but I like some podcasts. I had Audible for about six months but left it.
Reading, print or screen, music and podcasts are my main diversions.
During the commute, NPR. When my local NPR station is replaying and I’ve heard it more than twice, there’s a broadcast comedy channel with very interesting ads (mainly for limp willies), or I play something downloaded from my phone.

Wake up every day knowing you make the decision to begin your journey anew.

This choice in this moment defines now.

We didn't have a TV for the first 10 years of our marriage, then bought one about 2 years ago. It's basically a replacement for our computer monitor, except it can also handle streaming on its own (we still use the computer for certain things).

We've never had cable, or even the local "over the air" stations - strictly streaming if we wanted to watch shows, or I'd borrow the DVDs from the library.

So no TV schedule! Also, no screen time for our kids during the week, so the TV stays off until after they're in bed.

We do watch streaming shows (Good Omens, The Good Place, Great British Baking Show, Doctor Who, Lucifer, etc.), maybe once or twice a week after the kids go to bed, but generally I like to do crossword puzzles, read, or take a bath while listening to a book on Audible before falling into bed about an hour after the kids. DH sometimes has to continue working from home, or he'll play Ori and the Blind Forest, our current family video game favorite.

I currently work full-time, but that didn't change our viewing habits very much - even as a SAHM, no screen time while the kids were awake on week days. It just worked better for our family - fewer arguments about turning it off, letting the kids get bored so they'd come up with their own games, etc.

And most importantly - kept me from falling into the habit of sitting on the couch all day. That's the main reason we never had a TV - DH had one when we got married, and I was only working part-time. It quickly became clear that I had a difficult time getting myself motivated to do other things when the TV was available, so we put it in the closet for 6 months, and then just got rid of it. We could always watch movies on our desktop computer (tiny apartment = office in the living room!), and at that time streaming services didn't have auto-play options to just continue to the next episode, so if you watched an episode of something, it would shut off after just 1.

After several years of basically no commercials, there's no way we're ever going back to network or cable TV. When we visit my in-laws and I see the incessant "BUY BUY BUY!!!" of commercial TV... absolutely not.

I used to watch tv in the evenings but I recently moved into a new place. I am too cheap and too lazy to deal with getting a new “smart tv” ( my other tv was about 12 years old) and figuring out the streaming stuff. I have now been tv free for about three weeks and so far....it’s fine. I listen to music, read a LOT of books and do word searches after supper. I figure if I get a major hankering for a show I can always stream something on my laptop or get DVDs from the library

Niteman, I encourage you to cut the cable and land line cords!!!!! I have been in my place now 4 years. No landline, just my cell and currently just have NetFlix and Amazon. Of course, more companies are now coming out with their own streaming services so we may be back to where we were soon enough. I guess we just need to pick and choose what we know we like.

Also retired, I'm a CSpan and cable news junkie sometimes, but mostly the computer with a little 'entertainment' TV mixed in. Some Prime and Netflix, CBS all access, Roku.

I have no idea why I pay for it since I could probably get along with a couple of streaming subscriptions and Roku. Most of what I watch is Youtube, but out of habit, I keep sending Comcast a check every month for crap I seldom use and could surely get along without. The home phone that I use about five times a month and all the rest of its calls are incoming from telemarketers and robots and it's getting hard to tell them apart. I interrupted a guy the other night just to discover it really was a recording after all, but he sounded quite real. All I 'need' is the internet and a cell phone. I guess I just have some mental problem that causes me to pay a big company a lot of money every month so that I can say I have a quadrillion channels that I never watch anyway?

Sheryl,

The news makes me cringe.

That's exactly why I like watching the old westerns on the retro stations. You knew who the good guys were and some of them were proud to say, they read books.

You schedule your day around TV? That must be nice. I don't have that luxury because I have 3 jobs. I am currently on a break from one.

I have a few shows I enjoy watching but if I have something going on for the handful of network shows I like, so be it. I have a few shows I enjoy on HULU and Netflix and can watch them when they are available and I have time.

I catch a show or two in the evenings. Some days the TV is not on.

What do you watch on TV? I don't work and most of my days revolve around my tv shows.

Here is what I watch:

7-9 AM GMA
9 AM Live With Kelly and Ryan
10 AM Lets Make a Deal
11 AM Price Is Right
!2 PM Local News
12:30 Young and the Restless ( my favorite)

And sometimes The Talk and Ellen

That is it! My tv day!
