everyone is so caring & helpful. I sign into teams, even if no one else does. I have spark streaks that go back to when I started! Today is my 2406 th day of being active on the site, EVERYDAY. That was the commitment to myself when I started. My adventure to health is about ME, not others, but I am here to help them, too!

I am speaking from my (relatively short) experience on the 5% Challenge teams.
There is no replacement for people who want to be in the community and are motivated to participate but these are the things I love and I think keep the challenges alive:

- a common achievable health related goal (losing 5% of your body weight in a specified time)
- friendly competition, there are competing sub-teams, so there is positive incentive to participate because you don't want to let your sub-team down
- specific activities and discussion points, to encourage guided interaction among members eg getting to know each other, healthy habits
- a sufficiently large and hard working team of leaders who provide feedback, tips, motivation, and keep the ship running smoothly
- people who dare to share their real selves and real struggles; I have learned so much from the experiences that other have related
- rest time in between challenges :) Everything in moderation right ;)
Cheers!

What would you call such a team? A team that doesn't have a focus so much as it's a chat between friends.

I'm contemplating something "Front Porch"..."Our Front Porch", "Everyone's Front Porch", or just "The Front Porch".

I would love to find a good active team that shares tips, info, recipes and support all on the healthy level without all these cutie games or question forums like did I track food today, what is my weather, etc. I would like to see a team that could really be there to help others

Lol. Your post on my blog made me think of creating a new team for the old timers, so to speak...but yeah, I'd worry about it being a flop too.

actually it might be kind of fun to start a team for those of us who came back to SP after many years away, try to recreate the 'once upon a time' SP experience lol. But would it be another flop? who knows... sigh.

I'm glad you started this thread. I was a member of SP starting in 2008 for several years. Drifted away, and came back earlier this year, but everything looked so dead that I couldn't get into it. Yesterday I remembered how much I loved SP in its heyday so I decided to try to rejoin teams. (I'm using a new account so I was starting fresh.) I went into DOZENS of teams and every single one was dead. Even ones with tens of thousands of members. Most recent post 2015... 2012.... or if they had any from 2018, they were maybe 1 post in the past 5 months. It was really, really demoralizing.

The fact is, back in the day, SP had amazing forums and teams, that was what I was here for. Now I'm not sure what it's for. I came back because of what it used to be. Now I just don't know if it's enough to stick around. I'm going to try. I like blogging on here. I had posted thousands of times in the forums back then (NOT one-word posts or emoticons! Actual thoughtful posts!) and loved doing it, it kept me motivated and on track. Now??? I refuse to open a forum post that has 10,000 responses, I only even look at the ones in the single or double digits, and there aren't many. And even those, plenty of them are pointless (what emoticon are you feeling like today?)

The whole thing is very sad to me. I really loved SP and was excited to get back to it. I honestly had the same questions as you -- how could any of the old teams be brought back to life? I don't have any answers but I just wanted you to know that as another returnee from the SP heyday, it is indeed a sad feeling seeing how much the site has changed.

I'm sure the info is still good, the trackers work, but I was here for community, not technology. Hmph. I dunno. Well, at least I got to vent. Good luck with your groups. If they're anything I can possibly relate to, I'd be happy to join.

I'm on a very active team called -Slightly Off The Wall-. The husband & wife leadership are committed, creative and very active.

What makes a good team to me is active members and leadership. The problem is that most people that join SP aren't committed to the process of loosing weight so they join and then... nothing. In other words, they join with good intentions, but don't commit. I get the struggle, I understand, but, I'm also happy that I'm not in that boat anymore.

A few years ago, I created and lead a team by myself. I loved it at first, but, then it became to arduous. It was like a second full time job that I later regret having started. I accumulated members by creating a template email that I sent to those I thought would be interested and it worked. I accumulated roughly 125 members, however, just like all teams, most people that joined became inactive. I did the typical... created challenges, etc. I sent an email to the team to let them know I was going to stop leading the team. It became inactive and then SP removed the team after about a year of inactivity. I would not do it again... to much!

I love SP as it has made a tremendous difference in my life. The tools/trackers are a must have for me and the articles are very helpful too (although dated, but, still relevant). I have a few really good SP friends that I adore. I wish they were real life friends... that would be cool. :) Oh, I like reading my friends blogs too.

The teams don't really add much at all to my SP experience. If they all went away it would not have a significant impact on me.

@BUTTERFLY_MT -- no worries! There probably really IS a wide variety of people, needs, goals, perspectives, etc. on SP.

IMO there's the FB crowd who just want to comment & leave if the top 5 items catch their attention.
There's the ones who want to put their "stuff" out for all to see. (I personally can't believe the pics I've seen. I would NEVER put that kind of stuff out into the www.)

Then there's a whole mix of people who really don't use it much because for whatever reason (time, work, life), they haven't made connections which keep them coming back.

I've been around a long time & I've passed the age "50" mark. There are virtual friends I've made that I value in a major way. They've made my life better as "iron sharpens iron" (Prov. 27: 17).

I hope you can find a platform that works for you in terms of health, fitness, AND friendship!

@BERRY4 I appreciate people responding to my topic. My only comment that might be considered otherwise was directed at the ones who said "lots of participation" and then left the conversation. The irony being that they didn't even contribute to the discussion despite saying participation is key.

I guess ultimately, the answer to winning people back to SparkTeams is "we have no answer". It frustrates me because it feels like apathy, even though I know it just to be overwhelming odds and beyond frustrating. I heard something about it feeling like SP is just cycling through older content and not getting much new stuff out anymore (in terms of articles), which doesn't help either.

Sorry, I know I'm being crabby this morning. Don't know if it's the raining for days, the lack of sleep, or the lack of friends to talk to. emoticon

For me, I look for an active team where you have the chance to get to know each other. An active team chat, accountability, and encouragement are all things that make a team successful, in my opinion.

I have to agree that participation and interaction make the team. it doesn't help to check in if no one else ever participates.

People are responding to your Topic question.

Good luck "fixing" a team that has fizzled out.

I & one other co-leader have 10,000 members for our local area Team. (We all live in the same city.) -- However, she & I are the only ones participating. It becomes an almost pointless exercise in offering interaction when no one even shows up.

* People who take the time to interact.
* Support in the journey.
* Variety of options to interface... fun threads + helpful + encouraging & chat threads.

If people don't take the time to check in at least 1-2x's a week, then the team just exists. It can't "go" anywhere if no one checks in...

I've only been a member since 2013 and joined to help with maintenance and I have maintained so that is good. On several teams and team leader for three....don't find them all that helpful in support, etc. for me, it's the support I get from my friends. And the articles always give me ideas and the challenges are great too.

Less games and more healthy tips, recipes and support. Also some teams have no goals set, goals should be part of a team

I too have started back at SP. I first joined probably about 10 years ago. I stopped for a long while and now I'm back. I also cleaned out my sparkteam membership due to inactivity from team leaders.

I think what makes a great spark team is active leadership to start. Even if a team has 2 or 3 leaders it needs to be active. I think people start teams with the best intentions, but then life throws curveballs and a person can't spend as much time leading a team and the team fades away. That's why a team needs 2 or 3 leaders.

Less games (post your emoticon, name a band, etc). These are fun games, but SP does have the gameroom where all of these games are.

More challenges pertaining to fitness and healthy lifestyle choices. These could be daily, weekly and monthly.

Just my thoughts. I am looking for teams that have more challenges that are different.

I find team email is a great tool.
In the Beck Diet Solution team I send out team emails every time I organize a challenge:
-a structured 6-week challenge starting every March and October
-small informal challenges for Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas
I hand out team goodies to challengers and it is usually appreciated.
We also have an active daily check-in, that I visit daily and chat with members.

In At Goal & Maintaining + Transition to Maintenance team,
there is group of leaders,
two ladies organize 8-12-week +-3% maintenance challenges - and yes, they send out team emails before the challenge starts, then weekly spark mail to those who participate, with lovely statistics.
Another leader keeps track of maintenance anniversaries and posts in team forums so we can celebrate successes, and a fourth leader opens a daily check-in message board every week.

Note, most members in both group are quite inactive - team emails reach them if they haven't unsubscribed. Who knows, maybe a team email is the last drop of motivation that helps someone get back on track!

I hope this helps!
emoticon

PS:
Don't forget in any SP teams, majority of members may be completely inactive on SP. This is the nature of weight loss efforts! They may have gone forever but still show up on your team, and there is no way to reach out to them. Focus on those who are still here with us!
SP gives us great information and community support, but still many dieters may not lose as much weight as they wanted to, or not as quickly, and give up.

-go on with the healthy lifestyle learned in weight loss phase
-just add healthy foods gradually to stop losing
-work out every day - 30-60 minutes is enough to maintain weight and good mood
-do not try to balance overeating by extreme workouts, it is not going to work
-avoid overeating, instead of satisfaction you get stronger cravings

I'm starting to wonder who actually read my opening post. I can't control other people, therefore I can't make them participate.

Yes participation is amazing, but WHAT CAN I DO as a Sparkteam leader?

TIGERSEYEHEART, Yeah, that can be a problem, especially since here it has an emotional connection too...otherwise, we wouldn't be in this shape or place. But in truth, there are a LOT of forums that are publicly visible/searchable and that's essentially what SP teams are. NOT that I agree with it, and there are forums that are visible to members only as well.

I just recently found out that what we post on SP is available and searchable for anyone in the world without even having to be logged in. I have gone from freaked out to shattered to upset to (currently) unsettled. I also eould like to see it closed to members only because in essence this means there is *no* privacy on the site. I'm trying to figure out how to use this site comfortably now.

The support is the biggest thing.

I tried the spring 5%, but just struggled to get regular on the chat, I'm currently in BLC38...and so crazy-busy I struggle a bit in keeping up...but I'm still trying to get back into being a regular. Unfortunately, it's kinda depressing/demotivating to see so many teams go downhill.

But you're right. Those teams are still strong. I'm just not sure any others are. emoticon

The support is the biggest reason to belong to a SparkTeam!

I'm on the Fall 5% team which has been around for several years and the Biggest Loser teams
.
Most teams have a chat/discission thread. Both of these do. Those of us who use these benefit just as we did in the 2010s.

The 5% Fall Challenge is currently open, but will be closed soon. It's a great team!!

Sorry. RPG = Role Playing Game. So, a lot of it is playing a game as another character. One team I'm on is pretty much a fantasy world we "live" in [as characters], but real-world actions (exercise minutes, eating healthy, etc) move the story along. The other one is more talking about [various RPGs], but I have added a "defeat the bad guy by exercising his health down" type of thing.

And I need to add--THANK YOU, BOTH!! emoticon

And since posting and then thinking more on it--I had suggested all those years ago to have a setting for the pages at least (and preferably the teams as well) that you have to be logged into SP to see them. At least that limits them to people that are also here. Shrugs...I do get the concern over public viewing though.

Although, ironically, I'm wondering if I need to go more public with Corinthium (the RPG world) by taking it outside of SP and seeing if gamers (who would not otherwise see it/be on SP) would be interested in playing it.

Butterfly, I don't understand the last paragraph, because I don't know what RPG stands for. Could you please explain?

I totally agree with what was said by Kriszta - as always :)

I do think it's the community feed, but I compare it more to Twitter. At least Facebook has longer form and friends seeing your content and interacting. I feel a community feed post would mostly get lost in the clutter, if you will. But again, I don't want to be laying blame just because it's easy.

As for public, I just watch what I post. Partly, I don't want to set my page to private because it's harder to make friends or see if someone is currently active. It's hard to know who to even try to reach when so many come and go.

And the teams I'm looking at leading are RPG in nature, so I don't think that's too much the issue there. It does seem like most gaming teams are low to no people, but maybe there's just a lot elsewhere so that Sparkers don't look here for that.

You describe the changes perfectly! I was part of SP too about 10 years ago, then came back 3 years ago. The way I would summarise the changes are it's become superficial and more like Facebook, where the name of the game is quantity over quality. So the more you post and the more friends you have, you stay ahead of the game. I know that sounds harsh, but I really think that is what has happened. It is as you described.

I think the reasons this has happened are three main reasons. One is the Community Feed that attracts this type of behavior. Another reason is the way the Sparks points are set up, so that the more posts you make the more points you get, and those points do not take into account quality, only quantity. A third reason is that what we say on SparkPeople is public for anyone to see, so of course this is going to keep things superficial, because we don't want the world knowing our most personal thoughts and feelings.

I have recently closed my page to friends only, precisely for that reason to increase the quality of my relationships.

So there's some feedback that you might want to consider in your pursuit of setting up a new team. Good luck to you.

I'm a long time member of SparkPeople, but I drifted away for awhile (years) and coming back I see lots of changes/additions to the ways people can communicate with each other on SP. I'm used to interactions being based on SparkTeams, but now there is the team walls, the community feed, and the forums (which were here, but I didn't use much back then).

Coming back to SP, it seems that any of the SparkTeams I was on are mostly dead or low attendance (and before going to look at what teams I'm on, I did clear out a lot of them). The ones that do have higher attendance seem to be filled with "share an emoticon for your day" or "change one word" type posts. Now I know that this isn't every team. In fact, I've rejoined the BLC to get more interactions through SparkTeams that way. And, I'm also trying to restart 2 SparkTeams as well, but it's kinda lonely talking to oneself until more arrive.

SO, my question is What makes a SparkTeam great now-a-days? What makes a person want to visit again and again? What draws people in? And where should I advertise my groups to find more people?

And also, what makes the other types of chatting great? What am I missing out on because of my focus on SparkTeams?
