justeatrealfood- for now,I erase my browsing history and cookies every time I leave this sight.

I've already said I will check into ad block.

I think I'm done with this subject.
Hopefully it will get worked out.

Have a good day everyone.

I don’t get any ads on Sparkpeople.

Step 1 - Erase your browsing history and cookies.

Step 2 - Install a free ad blocker.

Repeat step 1 every now and then.

I have ‘AdBlock’ on my IPad.

geez.
right. because all companies that do illegal stuff advertise it everywhere using pay-per-click. seems legit.

theres a small triangle (and an "x" button") in the right top corner of every ad. click on it and it will tell u why u're getting those ads - its prolly cuz u keep watching porn. u can also report them to google or change ur google ads settings right there........... u can block certain ads, u can stop all pop up ads or u can turn off personalized ads.
....

archmimedesll,

I'm back. emoticon

I'm going to check in to ad block.. I have read it can really slow a computer down.
I've chosen to ignore the ads today. Honestly, I don't get these ads anywhere else online and I belong to five or more public forums.

Some of these ads look downright illegal and that's what troubles me. Trying hard not to click on one by accident. I'm seeing 4 or 5. Keeping my page pulled in. I feel there's to many to take screen shots of. Even if I knew how to do that.
I've just never seen ads like these anywhere before in all the years I've been online.

I finally saw the smutty AD she was talking about. It was an adult dating site. at least, that's the one I saw. My ad blocker usually takes care of pop ups, but some stuff can sneak through.

This is the way the internet is now. No matter where the OP goes, she's going to have the same problem.

If she didn't want an AD blocker, her solution would have been to purchase the premium Spark People membership. Pay the yearly fee and you don't have to worry about pop ups.

I think everything everyone suggested is sadly falling upon deaf ears. I think she has now fully closed her account now twice and based on her 3rd post (Serendipity-Day), she didn't seem to see the posts explaining that the ads could be based off of searches she herself has done, be it by an innocent internet search or accidentally clicking upon a smutty link. It's really too bad...adding something like an adblocker is so simple and highly effective.

ELPELOS is right. If the ads continue to bother you, install a browser extension like AdBlockPlus or Privacy Badger that blocks tracking ads.

As others have mentioned, most ads these days have something to do with your browsing history or cookies on your computer. Clearing those out could reset the ads that show up for you.

Okay, I closed my account here. Then decided to give it another try. It's even worse today. Multiple porn websites popping up.

To address a few of your suggestions- NO! There is no one in this household that is frequenting sites such as this. NO! I do not have a virus.
I am not the only one to see these ads. Check back a few pages for mandie-terrier's post? I think that's her username. The post is named inappropriate ads I believe.

I've been a member since 2012. I love this very informative/friendly website. But I just can't tolerate the overwhelming amount of these smutty ads. This is the ONLY website I get these ads on.

Sorry to say I am closing out my account yet again. It is indeed sad.But I did want to respond to my last post since I was the original OP.
Hopefully someday SP can rid this site of these type ads.

I have truly enjoyed my time here. But at this point I would not recommend SP to anyone until they get these ads under control.

Going to close my account now and I'm sorry it has come to this.

Harmless searches to you and me, may not be so harmless to the porn peddlers. As NIRERIN noted, the smut peddlers use harmless words to attract people who wouldn't normally look at a porn site.

Porn sites are like any other website. The more hits they get, the more they can charge advertisers to post ADs.

Now, back to harmless or not so harmless words. What would you think if you saw a teenager wearing a sweatshirt that said,"Route 420" ?

Don't look it up or you'll be shocked at the ADs you get. lol. I knew the alternate meaning, a lot of parents don't and should. I'll tell people after the OP replies.

If you are doing searches for cuddly puppies and the smut peddlers flag "cuddly" as one of their words, then your cuddly puppy search will get you those sorts of results. Also, the smut peddlers are going to want to get the most bang for their buck, which means that people searching for XXX porn are going to find them anyways, so they are going to pick more obscure words to attract people who aren't searching them out in the first place. Since everyone types and searches for different things, you have to police and report when objectionable items show up because not everyone sees them. Spark will request those ads to not show, they just have to be alerted to the fact that they are showing up in the first place. I see squarespace, Kitchen-Aid, Homeserve and Ulta, none of which sound anything like what is showing up on your screen.

Along the lines of Fatty Fanny, there are also some phrases that have a "normal" use that also have a dirtier meaning among a small subset of the population. You might not know the second definition unless you spend a lot of time searching urban dictionary, but searching for things about that topic could flag you that way.

-google first. ask questions later.

I use firefox as my browser because it also has a pop up blocker. Some questionable ADs to slip through, but it's not bad.

I would ask the OP if anyone else uses the laptop or computer that they use to browse the web. As I mentioned to another member who received an email scam, just because you aren't surfing for porn does it mean that no one else in the house is. if multiple people are using your laptop/desk top, any one of those people could be looking at porn.

Also, let's say you are the only person who uses your laptop. I'll give you a great example of a harmless search that pulls up porn.

I'm old, so I'll date myself. When I was growing up, there was a brand of panty hose called FATTY FANNY. some of our other older members remember that brand.

Don't do it. But, if you were to search on the words fatty fanny, you'd start seeing porn ads. If you don't have a virus on your laptop, then one of your searches contained words that triggered the porn ads.

You could search on "breast cancer". Because you searched on the word breast, you might get a porn site. Let's say you searched on dating websites for adults. maybe you weren't interested in something like whatsapp or tinder. you wanted a dating site for older adults. Okay, you searched on adult dating website and all the porn ads popped up.

These are just examples of possible reasons you're seeing porn or smutty ADs.

I would suggest deleting your browsing history, temp files and cookies. if you don't delete those each day, you'll keep getting the ads because that's how the internet is now. It's based off your searches.

Because NOT everyone sees the same ads you do.

" I don't have a virus"
Did you sweep for viruses recently? What program did you use?

I have been on SparkPeople for years and I have never seen smutty ads.

Take a screenshot and report any you get, and they WILL be removed.

You have the power to remove all ads. You can pay for premium, you can get a free adblocker.

I have never seen any objectionable ads on Spark People. Report them to SP so they can take a look at this issue.

Thanks but nothing I type could possibly produce ads like these and I don't have a virus. It seems to me they started quite some time ago with the new community feed feature..Maybe someone else is bringing these ads to the site. My question is, why are they not monitored and removed?
Probably no answer to my question. Just a vent.

Sparkpeople uses googleads or similar software, which means that the ads you see are targeted to you based on keywords you type. So if you type something about pineapples, you might get ads for Dole or Hawaiian vacations because those advertisers chose pineapple as keyword. Right now I am seeing ads for Discover, Universal Studios, allergy medicine and Amazon for example.

is how you report the ads that you see if you find them objectionable.

Another possibility is a computer virus

Why can't these smutty ads be removed from this website? Three (at least) at a time today and they are all completely inappropriate for any website let alone one like this.

Surely I can't be the only one to see them. . This is the only site I frequent that I see them. Do they not bother anyone else? Should I just ignore them, do my tracking and leave? It's even getting hard to do that now. They seem to be taking over the page.

It's sad and frustrating.
The ads should be able to be removed no matter how they get on here.
