ARCHIMEDESII,

That guacamole recipe sounds like what I would use as "salad dressing"!

I don't often get limes (the ones we get here aren't the best quality), but will give that a try next time I see some good ones!

URBANREDNEK,

In the summer, when I can buy limes for cheap, I like squeezing lime juice onto my salads instead of regular dressing. I've tried lemon, but like lime better. Thanks for reminding me about that.

Come to think of it, one of the best guacamole recipes I learned was nothing more than fresh avocados, chopped red onion, chopped plum tomatoes and a squeeze of lime juice.

I've never been a big fan of salad dressing, so would rarely use even a half serving of dressing on a restaurant / take-out / packaged salad.

I do want some healthy fats with any salad to enable my body to absorb any fat-soluble vitamins from the vegetables and to make it an overall healthier and more filling choice, so I'll include nuts / cheese / meats / avocado in the salad and use just some salt instead of dressing, sometimes with a squeeze of lemon or a splash of balsamic.

I couldn't find an image for the salad dressing McDonald's uses in Malaysia. I did find a picture for the size in Japan. I'll assume it's similar. If you need two this size, you're using a little too much dressing. You would definitely save at least 150-200 calories if you just used one packet instead of two.

And yes, I'm assuming you're getting your salads from a fast food chain if you're offered salad dressing packets.

When I was morbidly obese and not watching what I ate, I would routinely ladle lots of dressing onto my salads. I thought, I'm eating a salad, that's low calorie, isn't it ?
At the time, I didn't know how high calorie salad dressing could be.

Example, in the US, there is a salad dressing called Ken's. Depending on what dressing you buy, one small serving can easily have 60-150 calories per serving.

what's a serving ? this is considered one serving in the US, 1.5 oz and has about 160-190 calories.

When I was overweight, I'd use a couple of these packets. That's around 400 calories, just for the dressing. Today, I will use about half on a small salad. I prefer balsamic or red wine vinegar and a little bit of good quality extra virgin olive oil. And yes, occasionally I do buy a bottle of Ken's or Wishbone. I like the Wishbone Greek.

In general, I use less dressing because I do like tasting my veggies instead of the dressing. Salad dressings can be way too sweet for me now. Many people still down their salads because they think it's the only way they can choke down their veggies.

You’ll get used to less salad dressing in time. When I go out to eat, I always order my dressing on the side then dip my fork into the dressing then add my salad to my fork. Be sure to use dressing with fat in it as your body absorbs veggies nutrients better with fat. emoticon

I rarely use the full portion of salad dressing.

You may be able to use less dressing if you use the 'shake' method - put your salad and ONE portion of salad dressing in a container with a lid and shake it to distribute the dressing.

I understand what you are saying. When I first started eating salads all the time, I had to have an extra helping of salad dressing just to finish the salad. However, I really started to pay attention to the calorie count. Now, I measure every drop of dressing and stick to that tiny amount. It doesn't bother me at all now. In fact, 2 tablespoons of dressing is more than enough to make a salad tasty. You just have to get accustomed to using less.

2 packages of dressing? How big are they? I never put tons of dressing on my salad and the ones I use most commonly are two I mix myself: EVOO with apple cider vinegar or balsamic. I maybe use a tablespoon of the mix.

A friend of mine likes to drown her salads in dressing. As for me, I'm mid way : too much dressing and it's too oily and salty. However prepackaged salads often don't have enough dressing, imho.

One pack of dressing isn't enough, I will require at least 2.

How about you?
