I lived on the Big Island for 11 years - opposite side, far away from where the action is.
That said, the people of the Big Island are a tight-knit community. Several of my friends are taking supplies over to help with those displaced.
It's heartening to know no lives have been lost. The people who built in those ares know it's a really REALLY risky area to build - it's near impossible to get any kind of homeowners insurance out there because it's just that high of a risk. It's one of those prices of living in paradise - but they're resilient and I know they'll be okay in the long run.
It is quite catastrophic. I find it hard to fully comprehend how some have refused to leave (because it is their home) even tho' evacuation notices have been given, knowing how close the lava flow is their their house. All we can do is hope and pray.
