I cannot stomach purchased salad dressing now, it leaves a coated feeling in my mouth. If I can't make my own, I just use rice vinegar or lemon juice.

I wish I could lose my liking for fast food burgers and pizza! I love anything cheesy! I've been avoiding fast food in general but I do miss it!

I have gotten so much better about "mood foods" When I am stressed, I now make my best effort to talk myself off the ledge. However, when my "worst self" wins, I now think long and hard about what the binge will look like, e.g., small bag of chips over the big one. Or a small piece of chocolate over a whole candy bar. I am, however, pleased that those times are now fewer and much farther between. I just don't want to work that hard "the day after!"

A few months ago I decided to try 16:8 intermittent fasting. That meant that if I was going to have coffee in the morning, I couldn't add any half & half to it. Guess what? Even though I'm not doing IF right now, I'm actually enjoying my coffee sans cream still. I never thought I would ever be a "black coffee" drinker!

I used to love watermelon. I would not stop to eat it till it is done. I have no one idea why I was so crazy about it, but I did. On season my man used to bring big one a few in week, one week after another. I ate them all.
Now I do not eat them at all. We do not buy them anymore, because of my man cannot eat so big one. And I will not take a bite.
In Summer we go camping. I took train and met my man in Manhattan after work, so we could safe some time. It was after 3 pm, and it was time to take dinner. So, we stopped on gas station and took something to eat.
Two times we both fall asleep, and almost fly away from road. It is understandable my man can fall asleep, he worked since 5 am. I never fall asleep when he drive. This is rule. Now I did, I fall asleep, why?
Meal was too much fat. Fat lead to sleep. This is why I fall asleep.
After I realized this I never buy any food on the gas stations. I all the time have my own food.

After more than 4 months now, I have avoided sugar, starchy vegetables, and breads. I have monitored and lowered in-take of carbs to 40-50 grams daily. I have no cravings and have benefited tremendously in weight loss and lowering glucose levels!

Congratulations on your taste buds changing. Eventually you may come to realize that even the "good quality" chocolate no longer tastes good.

It's not just my taste buds that have changed but also my body; my digestive system cannot tolerate garbage foods. Both my son and I will get sick from greasy foods such as at a breakfast restaurant. (he's 15 and has never been to fast food places like McDonalds, etc.) I haven't had McDonald's since I was pregnant with him. I wasn't even on a diet or watching what I was eating back then. At that time I never thought there would be a time I wouldn't drink soda. I haven't had soda since 2007 and could never go back; the same for dairy. I'm pretty sure cheese would make me sick.

Now my body craves things like broccoli and spinach. If someone would have told me this in 2007 or before I would not have believed them. LOL

I haven’t eaten fast food in years - if I go to McDonald’s or similar (usually while traveling with someone) I will get a salad or the most plant based thing on the menu.

My tastes and preferences have definitely changed; much prefer vegetable based foods. When I go out my eye naturally turns to the vegetarian entree. I still enjoy sweets, but tend to only go for those that are really, really good.

Just looking at advertisements of fast food such as burgers or pizza makes me feel like throwing up! I can't eat anything fried or very sweet without feeling sick. The smell of frying food is even worse.

I've always loved raw veggies but now I totally crave them.

Like everyone else, I no longer like milk chocolate. It tastes like pure sugar to me. This includes Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. The peanut butter in them tastes like sugar to me, not peanut butter. I also put natural peanut butter on my dark chocolate - that tastes like real chocolate and actual peanut butter :)

Archimedes,
I loved peanut butter cups!

Now I eat a square of Lindt 85% dark chocolate with a bit of Smucker's Natural Chunky Peanut Butter (only peanuts and salt) and sometimes add a touch of Stevia to the peanut butter, and it is Wonderful! We can change our taste buds if we stop eating the original and stick with the substitute! As long as you eat sugar, you will prefer it. Good luck!

I think what's been most interesting for me to watch is how I enjoy spicy foods more now, and interesting spice combinations.

Did you know that your taste buds lose effectiveness as you get older?

I think this is partially why I love Indian food and other cuisines with intense flavors - my taste buds aren't as "sensitive" to them anymore, so I can handle a lot more flavor sensation now.

I think it's also true if you've been abstaining from certain foods like sugar, salt, fat, etc. that when you happen to have something loaded with any of the above, it can be a real shocker because you've gotten used to not having it.

Coming from a vegetarian background, I can tell you meat really, REALLY throws me off and gives me the heebie-jeebies. I can immediately tell, for instance, if my veggie burger was cooked on the same surface with the same utensils as real meat. I used to eat meat a long time ago and enjoyed it, but definitely not now. I'm transitioning to vegan, too, so I know eventually I'll react the same to eggs or dairy.

Food has definitely changed LOL I bought tea the other day and it had soy added....omg why??? If the box says tea it better be tea LOL I did call the manufacturer and complain but I won't be buying their brand again...I'm reallly realllly sensitive to soy in any form so I was not happy but I never thought they would add stuff to tea.

I have had to change some of my tastes because of gluten intolerance, others I chose to change. You CAN change your tastes either way, it just takes time. For example, I weaned myself off the taste of sweet about 20 years ago when I went on Atkins. I cut down and cut out sweetener in everything, stopped eating the even sugar free treats, stopped sweetening my coffee, and only ate the most low carb fruits. Now, I think I want a Caramel Macchiatto and get one...I about puke and throw it away! I used to suck those down by the quart! Same goes for most things I used to eat regularly that were sweet.

The one exception is those little bast&%$ the Reese's PB cups, eggs, bunnies, whatever! I avoid them like the plague, but if one crosses my lips, it's ON! What is with those things?? Makes you wonder what the secret ingredient might be...they definitely engineer stuff to be addictive!

Maria,

That is very true. The foods I remember eating as a child are very different now. Take the much maligned Twinkie. When I was young, there was nothing better than a Twinkie. then as I grew, Twinkies were replaced with other treats. A couple of jobs ago, a co-worker brought in a box of Twinkies. I hadn't had one in years. I wondered if there were as good as I remembered.

ummmmm... nope.

There wasn't anything inherently bad about them. They were still soft. They were still creamy. BUT, they definitely tasted artificial. I read the ingredients and this was not the recipe of my childhood. When I was young, foods were made with flour, sugar, eggs, butter, etc. Now, they are made with HFCS, fructose, sucralose, etc. Too many artificial ingredients to lower the cost have changed the flavor.

It's not just Twinkies. Any food that is mass produced, dare I say highly processed, has changed its recipe to save on production costs.

Let's talk about Hershey's Kiss. I read the ingredients. The first ingredient of a kiss is not cocoa. It's SUGAR or for other cheap chocolates, corn syrup. If I buy chocolates, cocoa has got to be the first or second ingredient. if cocoa is far down the ingredient list, I will not buy the product.

KISS Ingredients. Milk Chocolate (Sugar, Milk, Chocolate, Cocoa Butter, Lactose, Milk Fat, Soy Lecithin and Ppgr [Emulsifiers], and Vanillin [Artificial Flavor]).

I was reading an article on the internet not long ago (please take it with a grain of salt, as anything can be posted on the internet these days!) and there were claims that Hershey's company in particular had changed the formula of their milk chocolate a few years ago where there was less actual chocolate in the formula, and many people commenting on the article agreed that Hershey's is not the same as they remember. It may have been the same article or a similar article, or in the comments (I can't really remember now) stating that M & M/ Mars company did not change their formula, so people preferred their chocolate. I don't know if Hershey's ever changed their formula back once this was revealed.

I, myself, prefer good quality, dark chocolate. Often times, my boyfriend and I will shop for chocolate at European grocery stores or other ethnic grocery stores. My boyfriend is half German and half Mexican and he remembers as a child, his grandparents would send German chocolates to his family here in the U.S., and once I tried chocolates from other countries, I've found there is a difference, and prefer it over "cheap" milk chocolate.

So maybe your tastes haven't necessarily changed, I think that our foods have been changed over the years by the manufacturers, and as we are eating healthier, we notice it more.

MLAN,

I had a similar shift in taste when it comes to chocolate. I don't like the taste of Hersey's kisses anymore. It's not that they are too sweet, I can taste the artificial flavoring.

Now if I could only get this taste shift for Reese's Peanut Butter cups. I haven't lost my taste for those. LOL.

Oh and speaking of taste change, I wont eat Palmer chocolates anymore. They make all sorts of holiday chocolates. I think their chocolate is awful. There was a time, I wouldn't think twice about buying and eating one of their white chocolate easter bunnies. not anymore.

I feel the same way about Dunkin Donuts. I used to LOVE their donuts ! That was when they actually made the donuts at the shops. Now that the donuts are trucked in, I wont eat them. I wont eat their breakfast sandwiches either. Their food quality has gone way downhill. Which is fine. it's food I wont eat now.

Yes, I will say that as I've learned to eat better quality food, I've found that the cheap stuff tastes, well, CHEAP.

I can taste the difference in peanut butter too. I wont buy peanut butter with the added hydrogenated oils. they taste nasty too.

I totally agree with you on the chocolate. I no longer like milk chocolate (too sweet) and I prefer a small piece of quality chocolate (Godiva, Lindt ).

My epiphany has come with training my taste buds to prefer less sweet and less salty. I would rather have no sugar than even artificial sugar. I prefer the sweetness level of fruits. I prefer to add my own sweetener (fruit or a tbsp of preserves) to plain Greek yogurt. I can't handle the normal salt level of most processed foods, canned goods, or soups. Where I once used at least half a cup of oil to 'fry' , I now use a tbsp to saute or stir fry in a non-stick pan. I haven't had white bread in ages; I Prefer whole wheat. I constantly felt sluggish after a meal and frequently got indigestion. It was probably happening before but I didn't feel well in general. I had no idea that it WAS because of WHAT I was eating and how a BIG a portion I was eating.

I think that the biggest change in my tastes was caused by my choice to gradually reduce added sugars and fats --- which has now resulted in me being able to TASTE all of the other flavours that are present in recipes but had always been masked by just the overwhelming SWEET or FAT.

Like you, I still really enjoy a good quality dark chocolate and can truly savour the smooth bitterness of the cacao when it is not masked by the crazy amount of extra sugar in "chocolate flavoured candies".

I enjoy my homemade muffins and cookies and other baking, made with little if any added sweetener (blackstrap molasses or maple syrup) but flavoured and sweetened with fruits and berries. It was quite the revelation to me that there is a lovely flavour difference when using oat flour or barley flour or even a blend of different wheat flours (hard red, spelt, durum, khorasan, etc.) --- flavour differences that were lost when the only thing I could taste was SWEET.

I used to enjoy french fried potatoes / chips, or a burger loaded with sauteed onions and mushrooms and cheese --- but now find that all I can actually taste when I have these now is FAT / GREASE. At home, I do baked "french fries", and my burger is extra lean beef or venison topped with onions and mushrooms that were sauteed in just a bit of sesame or olive oil (and cooked just to the point that I can still taste the actual veggies), and just a sprinkle of shredded strong aged cheddar --- and I can taste the meat and the veggies and the cheese! I ordered a onion/mushroom/cheeseburger (no bun) the other day at a restaurant and quite simply couldn't eat more than a couple of bites because of the overwhelming FAT taste and texture. I'm too cheap to just leave it, so it came home and got chopped up and added to a couple of egg / potato / veggie scrambles that I shared with my husband (so - 1 burger got turned in to 4 meals + the original day I ordered it, so a win, I suppose).

It seems that a lot of us also share the approach of looking at food choices and judging whether they are worth "spending" calories on! I think that is where my gradual changes in taste really show up, since a lot of "treats" that I used to think were worthwhile (such as some traditional family occasion cakes, or purchased baked goods) now just don't make it in to the "budget" since I don't like them enough to waste the calories on them.

Maybe the change that I find the most obvious is that when I now think about craving / having foods that I "shouldn't", what immediately comes to mind is NOT sweets or salty snack foods --- it is broccoli and cauliflower and cabbage (which my body no longer tolerates very well). That has been a definite change since I started changing my diet 5 years ago!

Sir Terry Pratchett:

"Science is not about building a body of known 'facts'. It is a method for asking awkward questions and subjecting them to a reality-check, thus avoiding the human tendency to believe whatever makes us feel good."

I recently started a new position at my company that required me to go back into the office after working from home full-time for 8 months or so. A lady in my cube row has a candy dish and it had some Hershey's Kisses in it. I found myself grabbing some here and there. I suddenly realized that Hershey's chocolate now tastes not good to me. At all.

I couldn't believe I was wasting precious calories on it! I eat chocolate still but realize I want good quality (Ghiradelli, Godiva, etc) and enjoy it once in awhile. Then track it, of course! emoticon

How have your tastes change as you regain or develop your healthy habits? How did you realize it?
