Boy, does that outfit bring back memories of my 70s youth. LOL.
When I went shopping at TJ Maxx over the weekend, I was SHOCKED to see all the 70s styles that are back in fashion. As they say, everything old is new again. That outfit screams Laura Ashley. The hippie 70s look has been updated. It's now 21st century boho.
The specific ensemble from the ad: goes way beyond frumpy to absolutely hideous.
I did check out some of their website, and I'm fairly sure that there isn't a single thing that I saw on there that I would pull out of the rag bin to try and find a use for: some things are best just discarded and destroyed, since they aren't worth the time and effort to rescue...
I'll grant you that I've never been "stylish", but that mish-mash of clashing colours and patterns is seriously hard on the eyes, and would have a high probability of giving people migraines. Colours and patterns are wonderful things, but just like everything else --- there can be too much of a good thing...
Sir Terry Pratchett:
"Science is not about building a body of known 'facts'. It is a method for asking awkward questions and subjecting them to a reality-check, thus avoiding the human tendency to believe whatever makes us feel good."
I think "Boho meets crazy cat lady" pretty much nails it.
I think they were going for "whimsical" rather than high fashion, which is a look not everyone can pull off - and it's often easier to pull it off if you're younger. (Or maybe we're just more willing to accept fashion experiments/eccentricity on the young!)
The particular outfit in the ad isn't working (the "cat lady" vibe is just too strong) - but I've definitely seen older women who really *can* make the Boho look work, without any hint of frumpiness. I think it's a matter of one's personal style - and possibly an eye for when something crosses the line out of "fashionably eccentric" to "did she dress in the dark"?
Is this what they call the “Boho” look? Like after the war, you received clothes and since you had nothing, you wore what happened to be given away. Happened to my relatives in Germany right after the war. Not joking!
When it comes to fashion, I confess I'm pretty clueless, And the fact that plus size departments usually have limited selections doesn't help. But when I saw this add pop up, I wondered if it was just my conservative style. IMO I could go into my closet, close my eyes, grab 4 items and end up looking like this.
the other question I have is:...can a slim person get away with calling this stylish vs someone with a weight problem?
