A lot of people on Prednisone need to be very vigilant about what they eat. If your husband likes eating bread, find one that is higher protein/lower carb, and also high in fibre. Also, look at reducing butter/spread amount going on to it and/or replacing it with a little lower fat version. Just check that it is also lower calorie and not higher in salt.

If you want to make your own bread, look at replacing SOME of the white flour with chickpea flour (a lot higher protein and fibre content). If I remember correctly the ratio is 3/4 cup chickpea flour per 1 cup of white flour it replaces. Also look to adding wholemeal/wholegrain flour as well. I got my sister onto this and she finds it a lot more filling and quite yummy.

I lost my sight last year from a tumor in my left eye was put on 80 mg of prednisone, during that time I had to be very MINDFUL of wht I ate & how much I was on it for 6 months because of being MINDFUL I gained 1/2 pound I made sure I had lots of protein to keep me filled up

Hi there!

Kudos to you for understanding that it is the prednisone making it difficult / impossible for your husband to "bother" with making positive changes - and trying to do what you can to help!

I can only speak to my own experience with prednisone, so you'll have to talk with your husband to see if any of this applies to him. When I am on prednisone, I find:

- While I get some mood swing, I am mostly apathetic / tired / short-tempered (positive and active moods are rare), so positive things either have to be "forced" on me (as in, make it the easiest choice so that I don't have to think about it) or had to be planned by me during one of the rare active moods. Trying to engage me in actively making a positive change is mostly futile (and will only sadden / anger everyone involved).

- I'm generally on a low salt diet when on prednisone, and can end up seriously craving it.

- I'm always hungry, but have some hyper-sensitivity that makes spiced or crunchy foods more irritating than appealing. I also have a pretty constant feeling of nausea, which is eased by eating.

- I often have a bad taste in my mouth, which can alter the flavour of anything that I'm eating / drinking (differently on different days). Bland or fatty / salty seems to more often be acceptable or less impacted.

- This combination leads me to seek out softer foods, high in salt, not overly flavoured, and preferably something that I think of as a "comfort" food from childhood (needless to say - I'm a "bread and butter" fan too).

All of that said, I find that a combination of higher fat and higher fibre (sounds like you're on the right track with the keto idea) can satisfy me better than processed carbs. I also like to have a small variety available (not too much - too many choices is overwhelming) and have learned that I MUST have a combination of things and not just "bread and butter".

I have some home-made sourdough 100% rye breads loaded with chia and a mix of nuts, home-made sourdough 100% whole wheat breads with mixed grains, and some home-made keto rolls (higher calorie, but high fat and fibre) made with almond flour with psyllium husk and flaxseed and eggs. These are all at least 4g of fibre per slice, up to 9g fibre in the keto rolls, and I deliberately make the loaves a fairly small size so that a 1/4" thick slice is in the 40g / 100 calorie vicinity.

I have unsalted nut butters to use instead of plain butter (often whipped in to some plain Greek yogurt so that it is lighter), along with some labneh (recipe here: ameasuredlife.com/2017/11/20/labneh-better

), and really enjoy a topping made by whipping together a bit of cream cheese or Greek yogurt or labneh with some roasted pumpkin or butternut squash and topped with just a touch of cinnamon or ginger (or both). Pumpkin butter, apple butter, or fig / prune butter are all options that get used, too. I keep a small selection of baked or stewed fruits (chopped apples and pears baked with cinnamon and ginger, or cranberries stewed with blueberries and raspberries, or a mix of figs and apricots blended with pumpkin pie spice, are good examples) and either have these on the side or piled on top of my bread and cheese / butter.

These are all satisfying for me, ease the nausea, meet the "comfort" criteria, and have a reasonable amount of nutrients. The high calorie count seems to be reasonably offset by the longer "staying power" of the higher fibre / higher fat.

Another snack that most often works for me while on prednisone is a mix of roasted veggies that I can either eat cold or quickly heat up. I like a mix of potatoes, sweet potatoes, turnips / rutabaga, parsnips, carrots, onions, brussels sprouts, meaty mushrooms, onions and sometimes cauliflower or broccoli (my stomach often doesn't like cruciferous veggies, so those are hit and miss with me). I coat these in avocado or olive oil, a bit of salt or salt-substitute, and usually a sprinkling of onion / garlic / sage / dill / smoked paprika and then roast until caramelized. Depending on my taste buds that day, I'll top with balsamic vinegar or melt some strong cheese or add a bit of plain Greek yogurt. Again - it's "comfort food", but with enough fat and fibre to be satisfying for longer than a lower calorie snack.

I try to keep sliced roasted meats easily available (roast beef, roast pork, chicken or turkey breast or thighs), either in the fridge or sliced in the freezer. A couple of slices of meat added to bread and topping, or added to roasted veggies makes a snack in to a satisfying meal --- and sometimes a couple of slices of meat are just perfect as a snack by themselves.

Seriously, it is a really individual thing how any of us react to being on prednisone, so it'll take some trial and error for you and your husband to come up with something that is satisfying and easy for him, but has the nutrient punch and staying power to help keep the weight gain under control. Making the healthier choice the EASIEST choice will help both of you, and having things already sliced or measured can be the best form of portion control.

Yes, I know I can't make him. He knows he should and he would like to but doesn't want to put the effort into it. We saw a nutritionist who was not very helpful. His doctor is all for him losing. He can't move much as he becomes short of breath just walking or getting dressed. The one activity he can do is eating. He is trying to get into pulmonary rehab to help get some tolerance for more exercise.

I am looking for an alternative bread recipe like Soul Bread or Keto bread with less calories. At least if he keeps eating bread, it would have a little healthier.

The need to lose weight is a lot like choosing to stop drinking (if there's a problem) or smoking: the person has to want to change. Does your husband want to lose weight to help improve his chronic condition? Have you discussed your concerns with him? Has he discussed an action plan with his doctor?

Thanks for responding. He can't get off prednisone as he has COPD. He used to be able to but now he can't even get down to 5mg a day.

Hello people,
Does anyone have thoughts about how to change a diet for someone (not me but my husband) whos appetite has gone thorough the roof since being on Prednisone.
He loves bread and butter and this is his go to snack. He could breathe better without his belly. I have been researching bread recipes and wonder if anyone has made soul bread or other low carb bread. I have made some cloud bread but it didn't go over very well--pun intended. So if you have ideas, please let me know.
