I initially used knowledge of my body frame size and the weights of the women in my family who are built like me to average out a goal weight. I then made some adjustments due to activity levels. I'm exactly what my slender grandmother and mother weighed at my age, but I ended up more in the skinny fat realm due to a metabolism impairment. I think a goal composition as opposed to a goal weight is something you work on and reassess as you go since the number on a scale can end up looking like something you didn't expect, for good or ill.

I picked my goal weight range based on BMI and based on how much I weighed in the past.

I used the chart listed in the 17 Day Diet book. It seems pretty low, but it's my goal.

I believe that the 'weight charts' are unreasonable. I got to the weight I am supposed to be at one time. I looked anorexic! So I have a higher and healthier number for my weight goal. I'll be perfectly, healthily happy there.

It's what is listed as "ideal" for my height. But what do insurance companies know?

Consistency is key. But moderation is up there.

Randomly! I have been around the same weight for a few years now, but depending on what I'm eating and how much exercise I get, my measurements differ wildly.

Right now I only weigh 1 pound more than I did this time last year, but nothing I own really fits and my waist is about 3 inches bigger. I know that this is due to me being more "fat" and less "muscle". It's more important to me to have my measurements under control than to focus on the number on the scale. So I probably will never see my "goal weight", but I definitely will see my clothes fit well again and my measurements come around.

Keen to be lean in 2018!

I picked the middle of my BMI, although I think it's probably too low for my body-type and the amount of muscle I have. It's still a way off though, so I have time to play around with it.

Since you're already healthy for your height play around with letting your tendencies dictate where you end up. If you can easily maintain and 140 and you don't want to put in more effort, easily maintain at 140. It sounds like 120 is too low for you. But for the short term, just try staying where you are and see how you feel at the end of six months. You may decide you want to try for trim at 125 or you may decide you want to train for a half marathon or join a local parks and rec soccer league. Relax a little into what you have already accomplished and focus on being there until you decide what goal you'd like to set next.

My first goal was around 140-145 to get my pre-diabetes in control....
My current goal of 130 will keep my knees from becoming victims of arthritis pain sooner-rather-than-later!

When my doctor confirmed arthritis in my hip, he set the goal with me....

My lowest as an adult was in the 135-140 range and it's perfect for me. I had some shape to my body and muscle too. At 5; 2", it's the upper end of BMI but BMI isn't necessarily good guideline.

Hi everyone,
I am .9 lbs from my selected goal weight and I'm hitting the stage of trying to decide where I want to end up. I originally chose 140 (I'm 140.9 now) as a goal weight because I've always felt it was more attainable. It puts me in a healthy BMI as anything at or under 145 is considered normal for my height.

My lowest weight (ever) is 120 lbs, and I've been there both as a teenager and as an adult. It's very hard to get to though, and requires a lot of dedication.

So then I thought, maybe 130? The issue is that my body is rounded at 140, skinny with an obvious tummy at 130, and super trim at 120.

How did you decide? Additional factors that may help guide any advice would be: I'm 33, not very active due to schedule, and I naturally carry some muscle without working out.
