when cabbage patch kids first came out and they were SUPERSUPERSUPER hard to obtain. my mom actually came through by making a deal with a coworker who lived in harlem... seems in our neighborhood the only ones available were the african-american ones, where as where my mom's coworker lived, the only available were the caucasian ones. they made a deal to each buy one and then trade in the office. unfortunately they made this deal on a friday, and i knew that i'd have to wait till monday night when she'd get home from work to have my doll... it was one of the longest weekends in the universe for me because i couldn't wait! :)

When shopping meant going to the butchers, bakers, greengrocers and general store. There were no supermarkets. Only the rich had cars. We were sent out to play all day in the summer holidays, without anyone worrying about where we were.
This is really old-----I remember the peddler coming to my grandma's house. He had a big pack and he would open it and have everything imaginable in it, pots and pans, needles, thread, even clothes. My grandmother lived far from town, so this was very helpful to her and others.

You phoned the doctor on a party line (a phone line shared with several neighbors), then you could leave the door unlocked and go to the doctor's office and pay without having health insurance. Stop at the grocery store for a ten cent loaf of bread. The store only sold groceries and comic books. The car had a huge trunk to carry the groceries. Gas was 25 cents a gallon - or less, and there were NO self-service gas stations. The gas stations only sold GAS and oil. . and maybe bottles of Coke. We had an ICE BOX when I was VERY young. The ICE MAN brought blocks of ice to the house. He used a large horse-drawn wagon!
