Mom buying a weeks load of groceries for $30

Kids were often left in cars while parents ran errands. Nowadays you get arrested for leaving them unattended

Creating a "toy" by folding waxed paper over a comb--- for a harmonica.
Blowing on this made a silly sound---

Also, as a kid, searching through gravel to find "pretty rocks"-- sometimes we would find a very "special" piece of green glass in our driveway gravel.

God grant me the strength to reach my goal.

I am smiling too-- about summers without vacation trips, and never a camp outing. In fact, there was a steadfast rule at our house. It was--- If it costs money, the answer is "NO"--- We learned as kids - to never even ask for anything!

lol, I hated to write about what we did during the summer, we couldn't afford any trips back then, parents worked 6 days a week, etc., so I just told about where we played and stuff like that.............embarrassing though, when they made you read it out loud.

On the first day of school...Walking home with blistered feet from wearing unbroken in school shoes. Going to a local stationery store to purchase black composition
notebooks, crayons, etc. And every new term having to write an essay on "How you spent your summer vacation" . Like most kids in my area we needed to be creative, since we never went to summer camp or on trips.

Oh Ethel-- I never heard of a swamp cooler-- But we did have one green enameled window fan... It really helped during the hot St. Louis summers!
In winter, we would get dressed in the kitchen because mom would have the oven on and open the oven door to give us some heat. To this very day, I hate being cold. We grew up in a very cold house. Mom always wore my brother's flannel shirts--over her housedress. Mom's attire was always a simple housedress & apron too.

God grant me the strength to reach my goal.

Bama, did you get a "swamp cooler" as time went by? Those were something else, we lived in an old farm house built in 1902, they put the swamp cooler at the top of the stairs, and it almost blew you over, but really didn't do much at all to cool the house down. It was so humid, too, yucky, we sat on the linoleum kitchen floor to eat, because it was cool down there, lol.

Chipped, we immigrated from Germany, my mother brought her large enameled laundry pot over here too, to boil the handkerchiefs in! I was bored to have to iron them, when I was older, lol........we came in 1950.

Oh I remember the 5 min. typing tests in high school-- 60 wpm was a good test!

Somewhere in this country there is still a typewriter "craftsman" who can service and restore these machines! -- I always hated changing the ribbons! HA.

A note of trivia-- In my clerical career, I used a European keyboard which had the "Y"-- and the "Z" interchanged. This was not an easy adjustment for me!!

With this computerized age--- now the machines even spell words for us! LOL

God grant me the strength to reach my goal.
