... To crutch or not to crutch -- that is the question!!!!

Tuesday, January 08, 2008

Ok -- so here's the deal ... My surgery is scheduled for Monday the 14th and the time is clicking away rapidly... The o/v with the doc was uneventful with the exception of the discussion of "crutches" -- and how I was going to utilize them -- dare I say benefit --- from their use as I recuperate since I am advised that there will be no weight bearing for at least 6 weeks (-12 total) -- on the left foot. So, I make a pact with my brother, Dave, before we go for the o/v to have the doctor put me in a cast or something (note to self: stupid idea as they were going to do that anyway, we find out) thereby effectively eliminating the need for crutches since I am somewhat (ok -- a lot!!) klutzy!!! Naahhhhhhhh -- that didn't happen... Dave begins to request something other than crutches as per our "pact" when the doc recommends a walker instead of crutches..... Deafening silence enters the room .... A WALKER????????????? LIKE OLD FOLKS USE????? ??? Oh my GOD!!!!!!! I quickly regroup and tell Dave I'll take the doc's suggestion and meet with the physical therapist and learn how to walk on crutches properly -- "cool I say" with a mouthy grin!! "Great idea!!! Shoulda thought of this myself!!! " Dave looks at me quizically -- because this is not going according to the pact!! Here's the blessing: it's amazing what constitutes as a great motivator -- especially when vanity and a woman --- is involved!!
Besides, as I think of it, I'm too young to use a walker!! lol CRUTCHES IT IS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm sorry to hear you are going to have surgery soon! Is it this month on the 14th? My mum had a foot operation a few months back and had to use crutches! She found it difficult at first but within a few days she was moving faster than I could walk. 'Hey, mum! wait for me!'

Joannie,if a walker is the most easy and pain free way for you to heal, that it's probably youre best option. You are the one who has to recover from this and crutches are freaking uncomfortable as heck. And one thing that you have to keep on your mind is that this is your struggle and you really shouldnt care who sees you with a walker. Hell, you can add beauty to the walker hehe. Anyway,do what's best to get YOU better. Dont worry about what others think.
