Yesterday was about the most frustrating lunchtime experience I can remember in a long time. On Fridays I always eat with the group of girls I work with--it's the only day we really have time to go out to eat together. So yesterday one girl suggested we go to a new place she hadn't tried--some sort of cafe. I'm thinking to myself, OK, a cafe shouldn't be bad--there should be a healthy salad or sandwich I can get. I was trying to be extra good because my husband and I were planning to grill steaks in the evening.

Anyway, we get to the restaurant... eventually. It was crowded and right on a college campus, so it took about 20 minutes to park. So by the time I even walked into the place I was frustrated. And then I realize it's a burger joint, not even a cafe--a burger would totally ruin my calories for the day, and it didn't even sound good! They were really overpriced, too, with a small menu. I finally decided to order a club salad, which was a decent option but seemed high-calorie, with avocado, bacon, cheese, and egg on it. It was also over $8, which was frustrating. So I ordered, but when I asked for low-calorie dressing the girl just looked at me like I was crazy. I told her to cancel the order, and I just didn't eat anything--I was so frustrated! But I didn't want to pay 8 bucks for a halfway-tempting, high-calorie salad with no dressing! So I sat with my friends as they ate and tried not to draw attention to the fact that I wasn't eating anything.

I felt like such a whiny-butt! What kind of person can't even find something to order at a restaurant? *sigh* Eating healthy can be very frustrating sometimes. I just hope they don't think I'm a total whiner...

Ugh, that would frustrate me too! Sometimes it feels like the world is trying to sabotage my plans - imagine how much easier life would be if everywhere you went you could find healthy options with nutrition info available!?! Like you, I worry that people will think I'm a whiner, especially when I'm at a big family gathering and get all freaky about the food...sometimes I even feel like I'd be better off not even going. But lately I've had a plan that seems to work...I plan the REST of the day very carefully, eating about a thousand calories, saving approximately 500 for the healthiest options I can find at the restaurant/event. But it's still REALLY hard.

Congratulations on sticking to your guns and not giving in and ordering something quick and easy. Not eating must have been very difficult. WTG!

I don't see you as the whiny one. All restaurants (burger joints alike) SHOULD have healthy alternatives to their higher calorie menu items. Their loss. They just missed out on at least 10$ of your money (drink price included). I think you did well! I would have done the same thing! :)
