Medical Research Study

Sunday, September 16, 2007

Today I saw an article in SP's Health News section related to the enteroviruses that have created such havoc with my daughter's health these last two-plus years. When I read it, I realized it's about a medical research study her doctor, Dr. John Chia, recently published.
It's especially exciting because since being diagnosed two years ago, Aubrey's been of one of his human guinea pigs!!! We know how hard he has been working to research and document his work.
I thank God we had the excellent medical insurance coverage necessary to afford the opportunity to fully care for Aubrey and fully investigate the whys of her mysterious illness - that's why Dr. Chia, a research scientist who pays his bills by being an Internal Medicine practioner, was called in on her case.

There IS an experimental medication Dr. Chia prescribed for Aubrey that isn't mentioned in the article, understandably because it's still experimental - in CHINA, that is. It's not available in the U.S. yet. We have to order it from a pharmacy in Hong Kong, and pay full price (no insurance coverage), but it's more than worth it - the improvement in her condition has been miraculous.
Two years ago she was critically ill in the hospital, today she's a newlywed! She can work again, she's trying college again (PT). It's a lot more than "she feels better"; it's being able to get out of bed, not throw up most of what she eats, not collapse and be rushed back to the hospital. It's being able to function mentally and physically, almost like a normal person... As it is now, she'll never be 100% again, but she WILL be able to have a life.
I thank God every day!!! Best wishes to all, Elizabeth
