A Day of Memorable Experiences

Thursday, July 22, 2021

A Bible Study Fellowship friend of mine died and I went to the memorial visitation time…. And I knew not even one person there, though her sweet sister introduced herself to me on the way in…. Talk about feeling conspicuous! My friend was black, from a strong black community and church, and I was the only non-black person there…

Which was fine…. I was there to honor her, and to give comfort to her family….. but it was a bit different from what I am used to ….

First of all, the funeral home shared space with their church, which I had never seen before, but which also makes perfect sense when you think about it. And during the visitation time, they seemed to be having an Open Mike time where, if you wanted to say something about Ethel, you stepped up to the podium, and had your say….

The audience sat in chairs, and voiced affirmations to what the speaker said…… one enthusiastic friend delivered a lively short sermon on how a believer is “absent from the body, but present with the Lord”…. One stood up and burst into song, an old hymn that others joined in on…And while it wasn’t exactly the stereotypical black worship service with shouts of “AMEN!” And “HALLELUJAH!”, there was a real, feeling of community and love and spiritual appreciation for the Lord and our friend, His child.

Truly special!

Sorry for the loss of your friend. It was nice her sister introduced herself to you. So nice you honored your friend attending her funeral.
I do agree that having the funeral home shares space with their church. When people are grieving, so nice that the two are combined. Going from funeral home, church, and cemetery , and lunch or coffee and can be so stressful for some families.

How cool is THAT?!? I understand how different it felt - I was often the only woman sitting at the table during my career, and while I was able to deal with it effectively, I always noticed that I was in the minority. It certainly reminds me to be inclusive when I can, doing what I can to help others feel comfortable!
