How do you say goodbye to people that have been with you ,new friends and old for ELEVEN years? My child was a TODDLER when I joined because a friend in MOMS'Club showed how she was losing her weight and kept track of calories[when we were having the Biggest Loser Competition of our own ~ I came in 3rd!]and now my child is a TEENAGER and is getting to be as tall as me at 6 feet and he's only 13!
I am going through 300 blogs to capture and copy blogs that I wrote~
a love letter to my 3 yr. old son, a thank you to my brother ~Ode to a Caregiver Poem ~when he cared for his dying ex-wife because no one else would. The Thank you note of support to my husband for enduring his wife up at 2 am trying to balance getting her food tracked with taking care of a toddler. My toddler saying " Play with me,No Sparkpeople." So we would play ,which is why I would be up at 2am! The lessons I learned on Sparkpeople~food portion control, measuring everything in GRAMS with my food scale[this is my 2nd one!] b/c it was the easiest way to weigh by weight [no puns intended!].
ME ! ~ a 61 yr.old who had to learn her way around the computer by herself and had never written[ much less HEARD or KNEW what a blog was] before this!Or how to do a photo blog?!
And the 5% Challenges~all the people you meet on the teams and some you find live near you and you get to meet them in person! The learning that I have had fun doing ~trying to take the challenge habits and make them my own ~always doing a little better with the sleep routine ,but still a night owl ! Getting to play the games and learning new SP recipes with all the collections and learning about them through teams like Champions in the Kitchen. Finding pals to share book reviews with , or people who lived in the same state you once did, being on SP Teams like Gardening where we chat about our plants or Guided By God's Promises where we can uplift each other with Scripture or just talking about anything with my SParkfriends and SParkmembers or visitors who liked to visit the page or read the blogs. Getting to be a Motivator or have your page featured or featured blogs were just icing on the cake I was not supposed to eat!
I have learned so much through friends and SP information like the reports of the Daily Calorie Differential.I gained so much HOPE that I could beat my family's history of obesity ,that it was POSSIBLE I COULD do it . That I wasn't relegated to repeating the history in my own family with my child and husband.
I will be on SP until the end and then ,I will be on My Fitness Pal ,taking all the info I learned here and applying it as well. But I have to say if it were not for Sparkpeople, I would have never have learned this info. even as hard as it was to maneuver around a site when you don't KNOW what HTML is! When you are desperately trying to be the first one in the family to lose the weight the healthy way and show IT CAN BE DONE. And you can MAINTAIN it. I will be able to apply all those skills on My Fitness Pal, thanks to Sparkpeople and the people here ,including the SParkcoaches that I gave so many questions and comments to help myself and others. I thank all of my Sparkfriends,Sparkmembers,Spar
kcoaches and yes,Chris Downie, for the friendships and support to help me along my weight loss journey.
This will be a special moment in time ~11 years ~ of people, even total strangers, who gave me HOPE and said I could do it and BELIEVED in me when it was hard for me to think I could do it. That's why I am painstaking going through the blogs and even copying some of my groupings of foods for all the info I faithfully stored there.Sparkpeople will always 'spark' special remembrances of a time when I learned: emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

P.S. emoticon until the end ~ I will still blog til we go ....

Will also miss SP. In fact it drove me to go to a reunion in Decatur, Illinois, at my old college, Millikin. I graduated many years ago and have never returned. I guess I'm learning to not take things for granted anymore. Things just don't stay the same and we need to go with the flow, but it's tough.

Best wishes to you in your new adventures at MyFitnessPal.

A number of Sparkers are setting up blogs at BlogSpot. Do let us know if you do so before Spark goes dark on August 17th.

    Wishing you all the emoticon

I think you said it for all of us. I have been here since 2007. I will be able to keep in touch with those I have been close to, but I will always wonder about the person I barley knew. Someone I would bump into now and then and say hello. I'm so glad we will be able to keep in touch, and continue on with our journey. emoticon
p.s. I had no idea you were 61..You look wonderful!

emoticon Betsy, it was good to be your emoticon You are the only one I met in person. I joined in Oct.2010 when I was living in St. Louis, Mo working as a nurse full time, married to the love of my life and raising the 2 youngest boys. Hectic but happy times. Now those 2 guys are ages 28 & 31 and husband died in 2013. So much has happened since and Spark has been a daily part of my life all along. I will miss it! Keep gardening and feeding that teenager good fresh produce. emoticon emoticon emoticon Jeanette emoticon

When you think about it, it's amazing how much we have learned since we joined Spark People. I'm sure we will carry our lessons forward wherever we go.

I know SparkPeople helped me lose weight because I had been trying using different diets and different methods and did not lose more than 5 pounds! I got on Spark, starting following their diet plan, tracked every morsel of food and minute of fitness and lost 50 pounds! And it was all due to the teams and challenges and friends that motivated me!

Couldn't have said it better myself - you summed up how the majority of us feel about this site.

I know that I will miss this site and the friends that I have made the support will be a loss and my journal will be lost to me if I can not find a way to save it

I have been on a bit longer than you and know that I will greatly miss this site. It has been my lifeline as I faced many challenges with my Mom's health, my dh's health issues, and now mine. The people I have met on here have become some of my closest friends and we do plan on staying in contact, but I am afraid it won't be the same. I have actually met up with over 20 people here on Spark over the years---from Vancouver, from California, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. Spark has expanded my world with people in New Zealand, Australia, England, and France. And all the wisdom here on Spark which makes me think and motivates me to keep on trying. And most importantly, to keep moving no matter how hard it is!

Sweetie, you've summed it up. Been here 11 yrs. as well, and there just is no way to succinctly sum up all that I've learned on this site. IT . . . . will . . . . be . . . . missed! Joining MFP, too, but . . . it's not the same. The thing about this site is . . . the PEOPLE are it's superpower . . . not necessarily the tools. That is irreplaceable.

Beautiful blog and I have learned all the same things here on spark, so grateful for being on SparkPeople.
I will try and be here until the end too, sad that so many are already gone. But we need to take the lessons we have learned here and carry them forever. I plan on doing just that. I have made very healthy habits here on spark. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

I am sure that most of us will miss spark and the spark community/friendships. They will always have something to be grateful for - having the tools/knowledge to continue on their healthy journey. I joined Cronometer but only the very basic, free section, so I can continue to use my Nutrition Tracker. I won't be joining in the interactions. I also joined MyFitnessPal - too many inaccuracies for my liking re the nutrition tracker and only covers the basic nutrients. I MIGHT end up having a look at the message boards, but at this stage don't plan on joining them.
