Lately, I just can't get that saying out of my head and keep hearing Joni Mitchell singing it..
Sparkpeople has been a part of my life for over 11 years. I never got down to my goal weight, but it sure helped me not get any worse. And, although I wasn’t particularly successful on the weight part of it, I am fairly healthy and am not on any medication and I can definitely say that SP assisted in that as I religiously was tracking my exercise and checking off the fruit and vegetable and water goals fairly close to daily.
I have a number of exercise videos bookmarked in SP. I especially liked the “9-Minute, Low Impact High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) Workout” by Jessica Smith and had to recently go to YouTube directly to find it so I could change my SP bookmark for the workout to a YouTube location bookmark. Most HIIT workouts are high impact and way out of range for someone at my age and weight, but this one I could do (albeit some segments a little slower than Jessica), so was a real find.
When I was down (or really excited or happy) about something, I could post my SP status and people would respond. I know I wasn’t “Besties” with any of these people, but sometimes all I needed was a kind word to offer support or congratulations, or commiserate (or rejoice) about the weather. It was simply the experience about reaching out to a group of people and having them respond in kind and knowing that often what I was experiencing was often shared by them as well. It was a simple but valuable connection.
And, how would some of us have gotten through 2020 without this support? I was living by myself and my whole family lived in a different state. I am retired, so although I have contact with many former co-workers, it is not the daily contact that you get when you are employed. Just the mere fact that the experience at SparkPeople had NOT changed was comforting. It was one of the few daily routines that was “normal” through the whole pandemic. It made me feel less isolated.
But, life moves on, and so will I. I have hope in that at least the 5% Challenge Teams will most likely find some place to move. Many people from the other teams I am on are also members of the 5% teams, so am hopeful that some connections can be maintained.
So, thank you Friends, for all the support, advice, and sharing. You have been a part of my life for over a decade, and I truly appreciate what you have done for me!
