Last day of my 59th year

Saturday, May 15, 2021

Tomorrow I turn 60. It seems old. But I feel young. A lot has happened since I turned 50. Ten years ago, Z was in elementary school, James was finishing 6th grade, Briar was in high school, and Tori was graduating high school. Since then, all of them have gotten a high school diploma and attended at least some college. All of them have lived away from home and three of them have traveled abroad. Two of them have earned their GS Gold award and one has earned his Eagle. All of them have worked real jobs. I've traveled to Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Germany, Poland, Hungary, England, and Scotland. Would have traveled more if it weren't for covid. My mom has had a stroke and given up her apartment to move into a senior living community. My nephew has overcome a heroin addiction. One niece has become a doctor, another has become a lawyer, and the third has become a dental hygienist and had two great kids. My husband and I have celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary and I've attended both high school and college reunions. We've all lived through a pandemic. I've survived a10-day backpacking trip in New Mexico - probably the highlight of my life. So much crammed into 10 years. Where did the time go? As I start the final third of my life, I'm curious to see what it will hold. The first third was childhood and young adulthood, the second third was marriage and raising kids, and now? Who knows? Saying goodbye to a lot of family and friends, I'm afraid, but hopefully hello to new friends and adventures as well. With any luck, ten years from now I'll be looking back on another great decade. 60 is the new 40!
