I'm still here!

Sunday, March 21, 2021

Wow, it's been a long time since I checked in. It's spring and I'm ready for the next set of adventures! Winter was fun, it was challenging, it was definitely different and I made a huge commitment to a healthier lifestyle. I was determined not to let weather be an excuse to not get outside and exercise. Since downsizing our house two years ago and giving up my home gym outside activities have been my main source of exercise and well being.

I succeeded.

I took up snowshoeing and winter hiking. I learned to properly pack my backpack in case I ever got lost and needed to spend the night on a mountain. (Knock wood, haven't gotten lost yet) I learned out to rely on my GPS when back country hiking and wrapped myself in nature. I missed my family so much but did have one hiking buddy who was up for the challenge and the two of us started hiking up to 40KM a week. We laughed out way through frozen streams, learned that the water at the bottom of a waterfall is called a plunge pool. I learned this because we walked through A LOT of plunge pools! I also learned that my hiking boots were indeed waterproof.
I love the look my my hiking buddy's face when she did her first vertical climb. She's 61 and started hiking for the first time ever in the summer, we have so much fun together.

I learned to pack proper foods, I learned how much I appreciate a hot shower. I learned to stop, think about what I needed to do next and I fell in love with laughing again.

And I lost weight.

I got stronger. This month I attempted my longest, hardest back country hike of 15KM. it including short vertical climbs and hiking up running streams. It took 7.5 hours to complete and I'm pretty sure 3 days to recover.

I appreciate the days I get to see half of my grandchildren. I miss the other ones so much but I know like so many others, soon. The ones I do get to spend time with (yes, the twins) come hiking and running with me. I have also learned they are now faster than me when it comes to running, even if they haven't realized it yet.

My husband is happy that he's not the one being dragged out on the hikes with me but now that the weather is getting nicer he is making noises about going out again. I have a 20KM one that I really want to get in shape to do, I have promised him he does not have to accompany me. I'd love it if he would but I know he would be terrified of the cliffs and have no desire to force him into something he wouldn't enjoy. I now have a folder saves of Jeff approved hikes, I refer to it as the Bunnies and Rainbow hikes. I also have a Fire and Brimstone folder as well all there to push me into getting stronger.

I've stopped dying my hair, got my cheekbones back and feeling great. Yes there's been some down days, I've grown four new tumors in my throat and chest but they are benign, all considered, I'm ok with that.

Impressive. The bunnies and rainbows would be for me too; I’m not over keen on cliffs either...

I'm impressed with your achievements during this difficult winter. I miss seeing my family. I also mostly was able to enjoy outdoor hiking, with some snow shoe hikes. Great that you have a hiking companion.

Great blog. Good for you with your hiking! Going outside means walking or biking flat, midwest land for me. Bunnies and Rainbow hikes & Fire and Brimstone folder, lol.
