Oh Goodness Me!

Saturday, February 27, 2021

I truly think I am an open-minded kindof gal; I will try new things as long as they are safe and not too out of the ordinary. Is going on a dating site crazy???? Well, I am beginning to think so. You see, this is how the whole situation unfolded:

My very good friend living many many miles east of me is on a dating site and she has so many potential dates happening. And this has created for her, a whole new world. She is having so much fun communicating, learning, laughing and just enjoying. Sometimes she even goes out on a date for a meal, a concert or just a stroll. So after hearing how much she is enjoying herself, I decided to give it a go in my city, Austin, TX. Because I am such a newcomer, I thought what the heck. Maybe I will meet some new friends.

So far, NOT! Unfortunately all the men that have responded to my profile are exactly the opposite of what I am looking for. I took my time filling out the questionnaire carefully, anticipating a huge response but it just isn't happening. Either I wrote my profile incorrectly and the men aren't interested or, "what I am looking for" is not exactly available here in Austin.

The men that have responded, live 100's of miles away. That does not interest me. Also, it seems that a few are looking to have a second family....children! OMG, lol!

I have had one terrible experience with the dating sites years ago and I swore I never would put myself through that again. But my Spark Friend is having such a ball right now on her site, I took a chance. Oh well, at least I tried.

SO, life is slowly getting back to normal here after a horrendous week of freezing weather. I just got my utility bill and it wasn't too bad. After all, I was out of power for about 5 days.

I am really trying to adjust to my new living situation. I love my new home but venturing out is a whole different ballgame. I just still feel so out of place. I get tremendous waves of homesickness for California. I hadn't realize how different Texas is, a complete 360. It'll take a lot of time to get acclimated. Yes, more time than I ever imagined. Oh well, oh well...

    So many good suggestions here!!

Many people I know have had really great success with dating sites -- apparently setting up your profile and search paramters, geographic and otherwise, is a skill, like anything else, which improves with practice but you might consider working with a "coach" who can also advise on sorting through the responses. it does seem to be the way most people do meet both new friends and partners these days.

Wishing you all the best. A transition to a new place takes time so please be patient and kind to yourself.

Oh, my BFF tried dating websites for a while and it was terrible - the first guy she got asked her five minutes into the date if she wanted to get stoned, even though in her profile she was very clear about the fact that she doesn't do drugs! She eventually ended up meeting a pretty decent guy, but she met a lot of losers first.

Never been on a dating site and I don't believe I ever will, I really am not that much into answering a bunch of question on the internet, and I am sure I would end up with all the not-so-desirables. Maybe when your ankle is all healed and you can walk well, you and Bernie can check out some Dog Park, you know Dogs are magnets for the ones that are searching. And I am sure that handsome Bernie will wear you well. lol May when things get back to more normal settings and you can get out and about you can figure out what the city has to offer. Maybe there is even a New to the Community group. Just give it time.

You may not be having as much fun as our mutual friend but your stories are pretty darn great! I'm hoping one of these days someone really wonderful stops by!

Are you still in a cast or boot?
I’m glad you’re not one of the folks in Texas that got hit with those ridiculous utility bills.
Now, as to the dating sites, both my sisters had lots of fun on (some doozies, tho) and actually both ended up marrying someone they met on match. Both have been married over 10 years now and seem to be pretty happy.

Never did a dating site, so I absolutely know nothing nor do I have any good advice regarding it. I think until your ankle heals it will be hard to get out to all the neat spots that Austin has to offer. When you're able to get about without any pain or walking aide, just pick a street and stroll, somewhere in the downtown business area and see what there is to see. You might come across some shops that you would not ever considered trying by just driving by. Also start looking into the community groups, your local library and other groups. Join a book club through the library, or the community theater. If that's not your thing, see if there is somewhere you can volunteer, like your local humane society where you can share some love to some of the animals that desperately need it. Check out your local art museum and see if you can volunteer there. You do decorating right, what about something that deals with that?

There is a lot out there, you just need to be brave and give it a go. Nothing lost nothing gained. I know it's definitely hard to start over in someplace new, and I know you don't want to depend on your daughter all the time. As you put yourself out there, you will slowly begin new friendships, you'll see, it just takes time.

Dating sites can be really fun! On most of them you can set a distance limit, so maybe check the settings especially if there's a phone app for it.
